Thirteen years after my first review of The Raw Deal, I'm adding a star and making it a rare 5-star winner in my book. It's an unusual place, serving uncommon foods, in a lovely space and has somehow kept going for well over a decade. You wouldn't expect to find a mostly-raw vegan coffee shop in a small town in northern Wisconsin (about 1 hour and 15 minutes east of the Twin Cities). The shop itself is in a beautiful Victorian building with high ceilings and lots of character. I usually stop by on my way to/fro Chicago and Minneapolis. Most of the desserts are excellent, though occasionally you get a dud. The last time I visited, the chocolate chip cookie ($2.50) was terrible, with a weird, hard-to-describe flavor. It wasn't a raw cookie; it was baked. The pecan bar ($6) tasted okay, but definitely had a raw flavor to it. I loved the rich and delicious sunflower butter cup ($3) and superb, lightly sweet tag along bar ($3). It's amazing to me how they can make such sophisticated desserts and charge so little. Their coffee drinks are good and you can also get loose-leaf tea. Stop by The Raw Deal for something special. read more

I went to college in Menomonie and I usually return to campus once a year. When I return, this is a must stop on my list due to the pretty ambiance, open floor plan, upstairs seating, cozy couches, big bathrooms, sporadic farmers markets (check out their social media pages for dates) friendly staff and an overall feeling of warmth. This is a great place to journal, meditate, read, gather with a friend and the food and drinks are top notch. I recommend dining in to get the full experience but I also highly recommend taking home a few of their cooked meals/ treats (IE: peanut butter ball, slice of vegan cake or a burrito wrap) in the fridge section as you leave. If you enjoy coffee shops, this is a must see! Don't leave without getting a fresh pressed juice shot. So easy and fulfilling not to mention good for you! Note: this is not a restaurant. The atmosphere of this coffee shop is by far and a way the biggest asset. This is an absolutely gorgeous location with high vaulted ceilings, twinkling lights, vintage furniture, local art, and more! The space itself is Instagram worthy. The food is pretty lackluster and in some respects even subpar. However, they do offer gluten free and vegan options which is nice. The coffee is decent and they seem to know what they are doing. The baristas are pretty friendly too! They will work with you to find exactly what you are craving. They appear to be very environmentally friendly and use biodegradable to go wear (I believe made from cornstarch) and provide labeled bins for all your waste. They make sure to have signs everywhere letting you know all about it, which I greatly appreciate! In summary, this is a beautiful spot to sip on some coffee and get some work done. Delicious sandwiches, bagels and burritos. BUT their more like a juice bar/cafe. They have refrigerated goods - ready for pick up but i was disappointed that there weren't more warm or raw food options. This place is the vegan version of Starbucks. Only thing healthy and raw on the menu are their smoothies and juices which i highly recommend. This is a controversial and bold thing to say because there are lots of great coffee shops in the area, but in my opinion, The Raw Deal is the best coffee shop in the Eau Claire/Chippewa Falls/Menomonie area in terms of atmosphere. To boot, the coffee is great. The juices are lovingly prepared. They have a variety of cold raw and vegan treats (not the best spot if you're looking for hot food--go to the Food Coop for that!). I wish I could give this place 3.5 stars. Here are my reasons behind the rating: 1) We arrived at 9am on a Sunday morning and there was only one person working. We ordered three drinks and a bagel and it took 10 minutes to have our order taken and 10 minutes to get our drinks and bagel. 2) They roast their own coffee but only offer drip coffee. No pour overs? No French press? That is an easy fix. I had the medium roast coffee and it was acceptable. It would have been much better as a pour over. Being a vegan restaurant, the food selection is limited. My bagel and cream cheese was good. Would I go back? Probably not unless they offered different brewing solutions. One plus is that the store is a UPS drop off zone. read more

Stayed in Menominee this past weekend for the Eaux Claires music festival and stumbled upon this gem. The shop itself is a historic building in Menominee with red brick interior and exterior, exposed plumbing, and - presumably- some original woodwork. Big space with a balcony area. Set up with old lee furniture some of which is refurbished and painted bright "poppy" colors. Very cool space overall. They roast their own coffee and brew their own beer in-house. The coffee and espresso were exceptional in my opinion. I bought a growler of their organic pale ale and am just laying into it now - first few sips are excellent - I love unfiltered ales. Food - they have a short menu of items - some deli salads, bakery, bagels. We had spinach quiche, bagels, and bran muffins in our two visits - all very good. Environmentally friendly with compost able cups and silverware (and cans dedicated to compost) Love finding places like this. Would recommend it to anyone driving though the area -- and it's not far off 94 -- definitely worth it!!! read more

Really cute space, great for working. They have the same yellow flowered couch I had as a kid, which is homey. And I love the employees--they are fantastic in a friendly and cool (but not TOO cool) sort of way. And they serve up a decent latte, too. It's got history..including creaky floors. We asked for a 140 degree latte and a green tea. Both fantastically done. Glad we came here instead of a Caribou or Starbucks. Wow, funky Menomonie! The Raw Deal is located in a huge, high, tin-ceilinged, wooden floored space , with over head fans to keep it cool, and the coffee roaster in the front window. When they're roasting, the lovely aroma permeates the building, and you just know you're going to get a good cup of coffee. The "bottomless" cup is $2! And the food looks great..and healthy! A small refrigerated case holds the raw concoctions, like portobello tacos, stuffed tomatoes and quiche, and a wide array of pies. I went for the brownie (of course!), and it was deeply fudgely chocolate. Tasty! This is a peaceful spot, cool music, and now, they're brewing their own beer! read more
