Kids were engaged with her story telling, fun props and various costumes. As parents we loved it too. For my young toddler though her voice was bit loud in some moments but elder kids were loving it. All the rooms were open for kids and she switched on the music and dance lights. Kids had more fun wearing tonnes of masks, coloring handmade elephants and running around. I felt the food space is too cramped and it was bit inconvenient for large gathering. Apart from that this place is a stellar! Each wall is adorned with some wall art. A beautiful cherry blossom Tree in one toy room. I liked this place and the owner. She was there through out to support in any way possible. This is a very personalized place and it has tonnes of things to keep the kids busy:). She rents it too for birthday parties. I'm continually astounded by the level of reading, writing, math, and creativity I see the children at Harmony demonstrating. The fact that they've accomplished so much at such a young age while being so engaged and loving everything about what they're doing makes me want to go back and do school over again myself. We looked at a large number of Montessori programs in Portland and I could not be happier with the choice we ended up making. These have become such beloved traditions in our family that we plan to keep attending even though we are past preschool age. Nina and Bryan also have periodic parental meeting where we could learn more about classroom activities, individual development, and allow us to ask any questions or air other concerns. These were great opportunities to trade parenting tips with other new parents, and we picked up a number of great techniques. The teachers Nina and Bryan are the most gentle, loving people who have nurtured my son and helped mold him into a sweet, well mannered boy with a love of the gardening, pretend play, music and nature in general. Occasionally my son will have a behavioral issue at school or have something come up - Nina and Bryan go out of their way to talk through it after hours and suggest reading material as well as clip out articles to assist me. This has been priceless to me and so well appreciated as they have years of teaching under their belt and they have very insightful feedback. I know they do this for other parents as well and we often talk about what a help it is to have such valuable feedback. Not too long ago, the kids found a moth with a broken wing in the back play area. Nina had instructed them not to move it, so they brought it food and water and sat around it and took care of it. This is a perfect example of how kind this school and these teachers are and the love of nature they are instilling in their students. We are very sorry to leave Song Garden - we would send our son here through high-school if it were at all possible! This school also provides excellent Music & PE and Art classes, as well as Library time and Greek & Latin instruction a few days per week. More importantly, the school is led with the most kind-hearted teachers and administration parents could be blessed to have. The children are taught from a young age to love and respect all people and their environment, and they are instilled with a personal responsibility to bring forth kindness into the world, just as the Orthodox church teaches. While I am thrilled with the excellent academic and cultured education my children are receiving, I could not be more overjoyed as I watch them develop into good humans. Details and logistics: Elementary classes are mixed grades (usually 2 grades per class), but capped around 16 students per class. The older students take on a more leadership role one year, and then have the opportunity to learn from role models the next. The student body is very ethnically diverse, and we have the opportunity to learn from many other cultures. The school provides after-school care which is helpful for working parents who cannot pick up right at 3pm. There are 2 musical recitals each year, and several other events for both fundraising and fellowship, which builds a warm and loving family environment.
