i'm at my best when I'm lost. Not much to say for myself maybe but so what, that's when I find places like the Reddy House. It's in such a tricky location you're unlikely to get there unless you already know the food is worth it. Wandering around without a destination is an adventure most people don't do, much less enjoy. getting lost can be expensive, its magical moment: "where the hell are we?" is like what's the point of that? instead we all have cell phones telling us, as well as our great overseers in the cloud, exactly where we are were and have been, at every moment in our lives. when the mood is on to "take the long way home" as the jj cale song goes, first thing is turn off your cell phone and put the roadmap away. otherwise it's impossible to truly lose yourself on your way nowhere, which is exactly where i was amind to go this recent evening. i mean if all roads lead to roam (sorry) just follow one and you're on your way. so it was in just that frame of mind that i decided to accompany some random guy in a pickup truck pulling a horse trailer as he turned down some side road headed away from the rest of the evening traffic. i may not know what to do with myself but this guy certainly seemed to have a plan. so i followed him for at least 30 minutes, each turn leading to ever smaller, more obscure side roads. finally, the last turn he made was onto a gravel road leading to his ranch. that's when i began to wonder where the hell i was, and things began to get interesting. it's hard to explain the "why" of this. maybe you've reached the stage i find myself in now: a kind of homeless affluence. it comes from having thrown away too many things places people before realizing some were mine to keep. instead of learning from losing i simply expected others would be along any minute now. young people can afford to be so cavalier, which is why i always warn any who will listen, aka not my own kids, that it's unwise to take being young personally. you'll get your turn at the alternative soon enough. one thing you can count on if you're able to stay lost long enough is happening on the unexpected. i guess that's by definition since you didn't know where you were going in the first place. you go someplace because you're going there, but you get someplace only because you got there. old saying goes "wherever you go, there you are". question at this point for me was where "there" was. i had been driving along miles of texas backroads with tall weeds beyond the white lines defining the blacktop edges. no guardrails, the roadsigns had numbers like county road 374 1/2. in a weak moment i turned on the cell: no signal. i was lost, and happy. even if included on a large foldout map these roads would have been very tiny, like a bloodvein in your eye. the one i was on went through small hamlets with no apparent names, just houses with the usual texas stuff in the yards, boats on trailers, old tires stacked up, broken lawn furniture etc etc. texans are loathe to throw anything away. fortunately i had for company the reassuring music of that finest of all dirtpoor dustbowl musicians who came from around here, jj cale. to get to the state of mind you need to avoid agoraphobic panic at times like this, listen to jj cale, it always seems like nighttime, hey no worries. i'm anyway comfortable under such circumstances; better minds might need more certainty about things, to avoid the edge. I on the other hand went over that edge some time ago. eventually the backroad i'd been on came to a much larger highway, two lanes with dividers, guardrails, highway signs, etc. the magic was over as witnessed by the hurried string of cars and trucks that were making it difficult for me to join them. i turned onto the road, up ahead i saw what i had been meant to find since i started this trip: The Reddy House. actually not a house at all, more like a driveway leading to a small red shack about 100 feet off the highway. it's really quite easy to disregard if you're intent on getting somewhere fast, in which case you'll miss it completely. your loss. the proprietor is Ricardo, a fine middleage gentleman who keeps this roadside taqueria going all by himself, from breakfast until early evening. I went for a carnitas burrito, which was nothing at all like the huge carb-stuffed footballs we get in california. it was more like a large folded soft taco filled with delicious twice-cooked pork, rice, beans and a bit of lettuce. red sauce is killer. otherwise i needn't say more about the food as everyone else has agreed it is exceptional. if you're on this road and you see Ricardo's bright red cheerful little place off to the side, i highly recommend you turn in, have a chat, order something and it will be good. if you have time to be kind to yourself, have a seat, enjoy your meal and ignore the madding traffic whizzing by. Let the simple dignity of Ricardo's chickens keep you company. read more

This is a great little hidden gem in Trenton, Texas. Its located right off the side of the highway. My son and I love to stop by and get breakfast burritos when we are out in this area. They are best! Just like grandma use to make. All fresh ingredients and so tasty. We get extra to take home. They reheat well later for a nice meal. If your in the area or just want to take a nice country drive. This is the place to stop by and try. You won't be disappointed. They also have other lunch and snack choices. Great little drive thru right off highway 121. It's the cutest little shack. The owners live on the property. Tbe breakfast burritos are tasty and very inexpensive. You can customize your order however you like. Great stop for a road trip. read more

Wow, this place is delicious!! Wouldn't normally check out a roadside food truck...but the line of cars waiting made me curious. I'm really glad we decided to give it a try! The tacos and gorditos were phenomenal. Fajita meat was seasoned to perfection. Highly recommend. read more

This place is absolutely amazing. My fiancé and I passed it going to dog training one day and eat it EVERY Saturday for lunch/dinner. They make it when you order it so it's hot & fresh. The queso is to die for. The chips are real deep fried corn tortillas. I'm all about AUTHENTIC cuisine. If you are too - look NO further. I give credit where it's due. They are AMAZING. This little place is on the side of the road. If you aren't planning to stop here, you will likely go flying past it as we did for the first couple dozen times. Today we planned ahead and decided to stop. We will not be driving past it without stopping many more times. The food was outstanding. The service was friendly and very welcoming. Prices were crazy reasonable. I had to Gorditas and the fried bread used was absolutely outstanding. We also had a burrito with brisket. That was really great. Do yourself a favor. This is a great place. Noticed it driving by and checked it out online and found only two Yelp reviews and some of the info was not up to date. So my wife and went there today for lunch. My wife had the chicken tacos and I had the steak burrito. Both were excellent! It's a small outdoor building with only outside eating. We ordered in the drive thru and brought it home as it was cold and rainy today. They have online ordering and parking for order pickup. The food is very affordable. Today I had the pleasure of delivering packages to this establishment. I was greeted at the step van with a cold Dr Pepper and there own dolly for the packages. Will be coming back to try the food cause anyone who cares that much about a delivery driver definitely knows how to cook. read more

this is one of the hidden gems in North Texas! if you are northbound on 121, you don't wanna blow by this place. the service is very good / pleasant, however the quality and portions of food is next level! i rolled through with a crew of 4 and my guys eat! Mirel had our food ready in less than 15 minutes and he was joking all the time! Call ahead for groups and they will have it- I'm gonna try breakfast next week and I'll speak up on how that is! read more
