I have been with Colonial Animal Hospital since it first opened in Franconia and later moved to Springfield. Although the vets have changed over the years as some retired, the care is amazing for animals and for their dog/cat parents! I've had both taken care over the years and have felt so safe bringing my fur babies there as the Vets and office staff are so knowledgeable and supportive. Eleven of my fur babies have started their health journeys there and ended them when it was time. Although I am usually a bawling mess, I was treated with respect and compassion. Dr. Fennell has been the vet we have usually met with in the last years. She is so kind and shares the facts of situations in a way that we can make the best decisions for our babies. The person who checked us in and created the profile for my cat was the best person there. The vet was so loud and not understanding that some animals are scared to be at the vet. I cat is gonna get aggressive if u come in all loud about it. She also wasn't very smart. I asked her about gabapentin and dosage to see what she recommended, compared to my past vets and the dosage she said to give my cat didn't even make any sense at all. I work in healthcare too and the dosage she said was so off from appropriate from a cat. Then the girls who rang me out were shopping on their phones while I'm standing there waiting. The girl even acknowledges that they're talking about shopping. Like girl what are u doing. And we had to go back to get her rabies tag cause they didn't give it back. Super weird vibes in there. This review is purely for my experience with this vet over the last two years. I, like many other reviewers, grew up with this being the family vet. I'm Not sure what happened (sounds like change of ownership), but this place has gone down hill. Most recently I brought my cat in for a tooth extraction. When she wouldn't take her meds, I called immediately to see what the options were. The vet was busy, but the receptionist assured me my cat would be okay without the meds. Later that evening the vet called and chastised me for stopping the pain meds, telling me to give her the meds "or else". I didn't appreciate her attitude or the care since I had called 12 hours earlier for help. After several YouTube videos, my boyfriend and I figured out how to pull a cat, but it wasn't easy and I was super nervous of interfering with the stitches. Today I went to a different vet and they were much nicer and more helpful. While there I learned of an injectable pain med that lasts for three days. Seems like something Colonial should have offered. I can't imagine forcing a pill down a cats mouth is good post-mouth surgery. Now I go somewhere else where they don't make me feel bad about my cat and my cat parenting, when the vet could have offered other solutions. read more

I've been taking my pup here for over a year and I've asked to change vet twice (we've seen 3 vets out of 4). The first time we went in for a wellness exam, the vet forgot to examine my dog. I expressed my concern over a survey, which is nice to have, and had to go in to do it again. The 2nd vet is not friendly and made us feel we are the worst dog parents ever. The 3rd vet has very strong opinions regarding certain brands of food - which sounds very extreme and odd. My dog has allergies and the process and options of treating it were just all over the place. And we get additional $62 charge for office visits when we only go there just for a quick shot. I'm a bit frustrated by this point and considering changing the hospital. The stars go to friendly staff. read more

We took our dogs there for a little while. The doctors were all nice, thorough and were good about follow up calls. The vet techs are all nice. I felt confident in Dr. Fenel performing our little ones spay surgery. What I didn't like was that they took our dogs to the back for anything technical that needed to be done. Even when our puppy had to have sutures from her spay removed they had to do it in the back room. I like to be there with my dog when they're scared. If pediatricians can do all procedures in front of a parent than why not a pet parent? And the front desk staff is rude, unfriendly and basically ignores you. The only time I've ever seen them interacting nicely to others is when they are trying to get pet sitting gigs. We moved away and getting our records took a few tries. While I think the doctors are better than some of the others in the area, I found dealing with the desk staff to be unpleasant. read more

AuBrie my Shih Tzu doesn't mind when we go to see her vet. Everyone is so nice and everything is explained in great detail which gives me great comfort in taking my dog there. It's clean and well taken care of and we have never left disappointed. I know they love her and will take care of her as if she was there own. Thank you for being a GREAT vet center. I've been going to this vet for the past year due to the convenience of the location. But my recent experience with someone that works the front desk has convinced me to take my pet elsewhere. She calls herself Joy and initially I would brush off her abrasive attitude the first few interactions the past few months. But when I called last night to make an appointment for a blood draw she was extremely short and rude with me to the point where I couldn't help myself and get angry. After the appointment for the blood draw I will be taking my pet else where. All of the front desk personnel tend to be short and rude but Joy is definitely an exception. read more

Our first visit was to unfortunately put one of our cats to sleep. Dr Vaughn was sweet, nice and compassionate. She stated what needed to be done as the cat had a large tumor in his stomach and helped us to make the responsible decision. The next visit was for the same thing unfortunately (we have a house of aging cats). Dr. Fennel had no bedside manner whatsoever, she shamed us for letting our 14 year old cat get sick (she battled hypo-thyrodism her entire life). We do not vaccinate our cats as it is unnecessary and they live indoors and she went on and on about our cat scratching us or biting us and the fact that animal control would need to be called if this occurred. This to me was not what was important at all. The cat was dying and we needed to assist her across the bridge. I did not like her shaming us and the event was hard enough as it was. I won't be going back to Dr. Fennel EVER AGAIN. Three weeks later, we are still to get the footprint of our cat back, I have had to call and chase them for it, which to me shouldn't be happening. They should be calling me to let me know it is ready to be picked up. As I said losing an animal is hard enough without the added stress. read more

Thank you so much for the compassion that your staff showed us! This was our 1st visit, on a high recommendation of a dear friend. Our elderly sick cat needed to be seen ASAP and Colonial fit us in. Dr. Vaughan was VERY compassionate when advising us to put down our precious Pooh Bear. She stated that it would be the most humane act as his quality of life had deteriorated greatly. I, wholeheartedly, and with great sadness, agreed that this WAS the best decision. Pooh was 15 years old. The ladies at the front desk were as kind as they could be as well. They didn't ask for payment at that time. They stated, "We'll bill you and again, we are so so sorry for your loss". Wow! I have been doing some serious research for a new veterinarian for our family pup and after all the homework and speaking with friends and neighbors, Colonial Animal Hospital was highly recommended. Dr. Vaughan is awesome! She is very precise with the exams and explains everything in details. She answered all my questions and her staff Becky was wonderful. Cooper was very calm during his visit. We also got to meet with the groomer, Ian. He was highly recommend as well, after speaking with him, I knew he was very knowledgeable with breeds and how they should be groomed. I know this was our first visit but highly satisfied. We will stick with colonial animal hospital for our fur family member for a very long time. read more

First things first. I only really go to the vet for annual shots for my 2 dogs. Holy cappoli! It cost an arm and leg! SOOOOOOO expensive. Colonial Animal Hospital cares about the money and not your pet. My dog had blood work done and they never sent it in. They charged me $200.00 and after pestering them 6 times they finally admitted they never sent it in. The vet was uneducated (sub) and I had to tell her what to prescribe for my dog after a bad fall. They didn't have the anti-inflammatory and I had to call 3 times to email me the prescription so that I could order it. After pet-med received my order, they contacted the vet that same day. It took Colonial Animal hospital 2 weeks to sign the form and send back to pet-med. Unprofessional group. They all lie for each other and take no responsibility. Customer loyalty is a joke. There are so many incredible caretakers that work here- from the techs to the vets to the receptionists- everyone is kind, professional, and knowledgeable. This is a decent vet most of the time, but I feel there are way better places out there. We used to come here for our 2 pups and 1 cat all the time, but we noticed a decline in attitude, and care. It got to a point where the receptionists and doctors were always in a hurry and very snippy, and I feel that the health of my pet is not something to hurry through. I also saw a doctor who told me that I needed to buy a better vaccum and my dog's eye would stop running, when I imformed her that we have been vaccuming with a Dyson Animal several times a day (to remove the fibers from the brand new carpeting installed) she didn't have an alternative answer. If we weren't super impressed with our current vet, we would probably try coming here again in the future to see if things have changed, but we are too impressed to leave our current place. read more

I found this place after researching an alternative vet to take my pup to. I usually go to Alexandria Animal Hospital on Duke but they usually have a wait list and if you need to get in right away, you have to pay for an emergency visit (which is ridiculous). Colonial got me in right away to deal with my pup's ear infection. This place is convienently located in Springfield in the shopping center where KMART and Trader Joes is. It seems like a new facility and the front desk is really nice with two little pups behind the counter resting peacefully. The vets don't rush through the appointments and take their time and the atmosphere is very clean and sanitary and professional. I have visited 3 times now and each visit was nothing short of wonderful. read more

Dr. Fennell is the vet my cats go to. She's so great. Very professional, knowledgeable and friendly. She even gave us hiking trail tips when we first moved to the area. She called frequently when my cat wasn't doing great to give updates on his labs and gave us a condolence call when she heard we put one of our cats down. I always feel like I'm giving away my whole paycheck when I go here, but I am positive that they are comparably priced. It is a combo of me being cheap and paying for 3 cat visits plus meds/food/immunizations all at once. read more

I have a 2 yr old Pitbull named Duchess and we have been taking her to Colonial since we got her. Unfortunately Duchess has had many issues since we had her. She was bit at Dogtopia of Springfield by another dog and we brought her here and they took great care of her! She also has extremely bad allergies. We even had her tested and she is on a daily medication to help stop the itching. We also bring her here for her regular check ups and everything else in between. The staff here is very friendly and Dr. Fennell is who we always see and she is the BEST! I would definitely recommend seeing her for your visit. read more

This is a really good vet. They are super nice, helpful, considerate/compassionate and they don't rush you out during your pet's exam. They also see you promptly which is a big win these days. This vet hospital helped my dog through the good and bad. The staff is very professional and you don't feel like they're pressuring you and judging you in any aspect. This is very important because other vets will question you on each opinion or thing you may ask them. Now once have I been forced to wait too much. During emergencies, they're there and ready to help. My dog had all three surgeries performed here and he seemed to get better. Unfortunately his cancer did not seem to stop spreading. Eventually we were told the best option was to put him down because he had been through too much and was getting worse. It all happened during the blizzard this past January and thankfully they were open regardless of how bad it was.Thanks to this hospital/vet clinic, my dog was able to live 14 happy years. This hospital has been there since last month during no our healing process but sending condolences/get well cards. I couldn't have been happier having no anyone else take care of our furry family member. read more

I absolutely love this vet office. I have been taking my dog here for about 3 years and have ALWAYS had a great experience. The office is kept really clean and the staff is very welcoming and friendly. I sadly had to put down my dog because of an illness and the whole office was very supportive. Dr. Vaughan really took her time walking me through all the medical options and explained everything to me during a really difficult decision. Even after my dog passed I received a personally written sympathy card from the office and even received a follow up call to see how I was doing...they really care about not only their patients, but the 'parents' of the patients. If/when we get another pet this will definitely be the vet that we go to! read more

I have been using this vet practice for more than 15 years. Although I liked the vets with the former practice, I feel the current veterinarians are very caring and professional. The staff is always courteous and make it easy to book an appointment. When I bring my pets in, they get first rate veterinary care and I never leave with a question unanswered. Our family loves Dr. Alt at Burke Veterinary Clinic, but we gave Colonial Animal Hospital a try due to the good reviews and groupon deal. Since then, we have visited 2-3 times with our two elderly dogs, and each time with appointments, we had to wait at least 30-45 mins to be seen, which is so hard for our 12 year beagle who has mobility issues. There are no dog beds in the waiting room or individual rooms and they couldn't provide one when we asked. I usually don't write reviews, but each time, we had a terrible customer experience. It's really not worth saving the money or using the groupon deal. For our first visit in April, we had our medical forms faxed one week in advance, and our forms were not reviewed by staff in advance of our appointment. They made us wait 45 minutes to verify information they couldn't read from the faxed forms, not providing me an explanation of what was happening until 30 mins later I heard the front desk finally calling our vet to verify the rabies vaccine expiration date. They are somewhat disorganized and lack excellent customer service although I do like some of the people very much on staff. We'll be going back to Burke Vet Clinic. read more

I just moved to the area and got estimates from several vets and this one was by far the most reasonable. They were able to fit me in right away and the service was excellent. Dr. Fennell was very knowledgable about my dog's conditions (he has past health issues too) and she helped us figure out a regiment that was perfect for what he needed. My parents were clients of Colonial for years and years so naturally, when I got married, we brought our animals here, also. Everything was great until the practice was sold. During the transition time, our german shepherd accidently had the end of her tail ripped off and we rushed her in and she was seen by one of the new vets. Over $1,000 later, we walked out with assurances of further surgeries, etc. A couple days later we brought her back in for a tail check and saw one of the old vets. He shook his head, snipped the end of her tail clean, bandaged her up and sent us on our way. Her fur grew back perfectly and we never had an issue with it. Several years later, we brought in a rescue kitten for his shots and to set up neutering and were told that they would not honor a discounted fee agreement with the rescue facility. After speaking with the manager, who was extremely rude, we left the practice. We have heard similar stories over the years since and I was pretty surprised people continue to bring their pets here. read more
