I'm not sure my friends and I would be there 2-3x a week if not for Brett and Brian. Having employees that actually love skating is a true asset! Sadly, I learned Brian has been let go. I don't know details, but I know that the rink lost a gem! I took my grandson to the Saturday morning classes and he LOVED them. Brian is AMAZING with the kids and at teaching in general. Brett has been super helpful with our group buying new skates and upgrading wheels! Super friendly and helpful! The girls in the concessions area are always friendly and nice as well! Our middle schoolers are younger and we would never leave them - only a few parents stayed with their middle school kids and there was nowhere for parents to sit, just the food tables where the teens left all their stuff and drinks and 2 places that were meant for people to sit down and adjust skates. Nobody was rude to us although the fast skating teens were a danger to my younger kids, and one did plough into one of my girls (he was very kind, apologized and got her ice). They frequently have "instructors only" skate for the older teens that I assumed would be doing the fast skating and tricks but most people just ignored what they said and there wasn't much special on those. We did like the games. My kids have asked me to find a skating rink more like what we are used to with Brentwood Skate Center where we used to go, more family oriented. If your kids are ok to be dropped off, they will probably have fun but mine are just too young at this point. If you have little kids/beginners they are not able to use the rolling teaching aids during friday night skate so plan on coming to a daytime skating session for that.

My daughter can skate just fine. My son, not so much, yet. We needed a skate buddy (one of those assist rollers kids hold on to). There were no instructions walking in that you have to pay and be on a list for them. My son sat for 30 minutes, I saw one free up and asked the the lady to use it. She said she checked it out. I walked over with her and then they explained I had to sign-up on the wait list, but noted I probably wouldn't get one by time they closed. Great. My son at this point just sat. So I decided to carry him and skate around. He enjoyed that. A worker came up and said I couldn't do that. It was pretty frustrating. It's a cluster for big events.

I hadn't been to a roller derby match before, but they provide a pamphlet that explains the rules and objects of the match. I was up to speed and following along in no time! And I had a great time! It was great to watch women playing a sport that showcases their strength and fight. And to see little girls with their parents watching a women's sport was really inspiring. It's quite inexpensive, and there are beers and junk food you expect at sporting events (pretzels and nacho cheese and chips and hot dogs)! A great time overall. I know I'll be back for a match next season!

Now that its at the Municipal Auditorium its even more awesome. Gone are the painful bleachers, replaced with nice comfortable seats. Concession stands that are easy to get to, and a nice big arena for the girls to do their stuff! Its not without its downsides though.. Paying to park is a bummer, since its downtown. Also, having to pay Ticketmaster almost doubles the prices for a game. The solution to the ticket price is to buy at the box office or from one of the vendors (like Ben and Jerry's) that sell tickets before the game. When the games were at the fairgrounds, sell outs were possible. At Municipal I'm not sure how likely it is. Keep in mind though, it IS quite popular and there is usually a pretty decent turnout. The volume level is quite high, equal to a rock concert in my opinion so if you have sensitive ears, earplugs are recommended. Highly recommended!
