I hadn't been to a roller derby match before, but they provide a pamphlet that explains the rules and objects of the match. I was up to speed and following along in no time! And I had a great time! It was great to watch women playing a sport that showcases their strength and fight. And to see little girls with their parents watching a women's sport was really inspiring. It's quite inexpensive, and there are beers and junk food you expect at sporting events (pretzels and nacho cheese and chips and hot dogs)! A great time overall. What can you say about Rollergirls? Its awesome fun! I'm not much of a sports person, but somehow the team spirit of Rollergirls really sucks you in. Now that its at the Municipal Auditorium its even more awesome. Gone are the painful bleachers, replaced with nice comfortable seats. Concession stands that are easy to get to, and a nice big arena for the girls to do their stuff! Its not without its downsides though.. Paying to park is a bummer, since its downtown. Also, having to pay Ticketmaster almost doubles the prices for a game. The solution to the ticket price is to buy at the box office or from one of the vendors (like Ben and Jerry's) that sell tickets before the game. When the games were at the fairgrounds, sell outs were possible. At Municipal I'm not sure how likely it is. Keep in mind though, it IS quite popular and there is usually a pretty decent turnout. The volume level is quite high, equal to a rock concert in my opinion so if you have sensitive ears, earplugs are recommended. Highly recommended! read more

What isn't there to like about going and seeing the Nashville Rollergirls in action? Cheap ticket prices: check. Aggressive girls on skates: check. A loud and lively crowd: check. I went down with a small group and we had a blast. The Nashville Brawlers put up a tough fight, but ended up on the losing end with their battle against the girls from Carolina. The Allstars on the other hand had an awesome performance. At the half they were down over 30 points and seemed to be doomed, but by the end they had staged a massive comeback performance that had everyone on the edge of their seats and screaming like crazy. Overall it was a great experience and I would definitely go back again. A quick tip: make sure you pick up one of the free programs on your way through the door so you can understand exactly how the points are scored...otherwise you may be completely lost at what is going on as the points keep racking up! read more

Admittedly, I prejudged this place. I was invited to see the Rollergirls and to say I was not even remotely excited about it would be an understatement. I didn't want to go - I didn't understand what was going on and I didn't want to show up and be a part of that crowd. After I paid for my $15 ticket and handed it to a young woman with a giant bruise on the right side of her body, my notions were not dispelled. And then I went inside...and it was incredible. The learning curve is pretty low, although I've tried to spell out how exactly they score here and it comes out convoluted every time I do it, so I'll just delete what I wrote and leave it at this - if you go to a "bout", you'll figure out how it works. Trust me. The crowd is just a normal sporting event crowd. One of the girls' grandmothers was sitting near us. The sport itself is fast, tastefully violent (they hit each other...not quite at hockey levels, but they do collide pretty hard) and simply fun. It's a little weird at first because the girls skate under aliases...you worry that you're about to see pro wrestling on skates. If you're worried about that, like I was, stop right now...because it isn't. You also have play-by-play guys sitting on a stage calling the action on the PA and music running during the entire event. It's a cheap, fun, good time. The sport is competitive, but doesn't remotely take itself seriously. You'll have fun. Remember, I went into this with a closed mind... I have two "pro tips" for this one: - Sit in the "upper bowl" - all seats are general admission, so you can sit wherever you like, but after starting in the lower bowl, we moved to the upper bowl because we realized we could see the whole track from up there. - Park at the courthouse/public square. Takie Outie. This would be my Rollergirl name if I ever became WoMan enough to join in the fun. I went to my first match last night and had such a FUN time. Infact, I may be ADDICTED. Heard a rumbling that around 2500 tix were sold for last night's matches and the energy was certainly felt as the competitive ladies dashed around the rink to earn points and kick a little ass. This venue was nice as it was cool, spacious, and the perfect scene for a little people-watching. I loved the diverse crowd that even included many families and super-fans! Ticket prices were inexpensive and around $15 for both matches but the price for beer and cocktails was a little crazy. I bought a small cup of vodka and water for $7 and my poor friend bout 2 doubles of vodka/soda for $26. This isn't the derby girls fault but I would definitely pre-game it before coming..... I will definitely be back ...maybe with a jersey on? read more

Roller Derby? On Skates? That's what I said when the idea was introduced to me. My hubster's Frat Prez's wife is as cute as can be! I could never imagine here out there beating people up on wheels. I had to see it for myself. I'd never been before at all. Roller Derby is pretty much awesome and a VERY easy thing to get into watching. Yes, you will spend your first hour thinking about what your name would be if you were out there. I think mine would be Krown Me. It truly is a full contact sport and I have a lot of respect for anyone with the bravery to get out there. What I will tell you is just go! Don't try to put it in a box because there isn't one. Imagine a hockey game, but replace the ice with a roller rink. Swap out the baggy jerseys for fishnet hose and tank tops, and abandon ordinary names in favor of pseudonyms like Hilda-beast and Rambo Sambo. What you have is a reasonable facsimile of women's roller derby. The scoring is completely different, but both sports are rowdy, raucous and sometimes punctuated with fights between the players and refs. That being said, Roller derby is addicting. I think it is something that must be experienced at least once in your life. The crowds are mixed with a little bit of everything, the fans are whipped into a frenzy by the team "jeer squad" the Rhinestone Ruckus. There is live music, which kicks off the match with a powerful rendition of the star spangled banner Alla Jimi Hendrix. During match play there is a DJ keeping the beats going and a live play by play announcer Dr. Gonzo keeping you in the loop (so to speak) Everyone should get out and support their local derby girls. I was in Nashville with a group of friends for our fantasy football draft. We ended up going to the Rollergirls almost as something laughable: we figured we would go and drink, at like idiots, and generally laugh at ourselves. Well all of that happened, but the surprise was how much we actually enjoy the roller derby. The first game was pretty slow, and because it was the first time most of us had been we didn't really follow what was going on. I think several of us were ready to give up... When the second game got going, things really changed. The pace was so much better and the crowd really came to life. we found that we had begun to understand the rules and we were really enjoying ourselves. I was a little disappointed in the beer selection - although they did offer 24oz. "man cans." The food wasn't great, but not any different than we expected. I think most of us had chicken finger baskets and it was certainly acceptable stadium food. Tickets were $8 and it was well worth the price of admission. If you find yourself in a city with a roller derby team, I suggest you check it out. Be patient, learn the rules, and enjoy. read more

As soon as we lugged our ten ton bags up two flights of stairs and down the never ending hallway to our hostel room, my teen daughter and I freshened up and hailed a taxi to Nashville's Municipal Arena where the Nashville Rollergirls would battle the Chicago's Shade Brigade in a boisterous game of roller derby. Just as we were walking into the stadium, I asked my daughter who we should root for..."The team with the cutest costumes..." Clearly we had never been to a roller derby game before. But, thanks to the free program, it didn't take us too long to figure out when to cheer, when to boo, and the basic gist of the game. This was a great non-touristy outing on our brief visit to Nashville. Unfortunately, Nashville's fashion sense didn't help them on the track...but, we still had a blast. read more

Roller Derby rocks.. It's way way more fun than Hockey!! It's raucously crowded, your sitting on bleachers, drinking PBR, watching a bunch of gorilla strong girls with bad ass names ram in to each other. I totally didn't understand the scoring even after I read and listened to the rules but who cares, the whole thing is funny as hell. The Jeer Leaders top off this gem of a sport that doesn't take itself too seriously. If you are looking for something different than ho hum dinner and a movie, look these girls up. During our recent stay in Nashville we noticed that the Rollergirls were playing (Is it playing? Rolling? Derbying? Jamming?). This, we decided, was a must-see; a different view of the town with a decidedly less stereotypical Nashville demographic. So to the municipal auditorium we arrived. With popcorn & beer in hand, we grabbed our seats just as the first "jam" was ending. Five minutes into the "main event" we understood about 90% of the rules. My wife, who is anti-sport in almost all respects, was cheering and yelling like a season ticket holder. Everybody we ran into was exceedingly friendly and there was almost this family-fun vibe to it. Lots of children were in attendance; lots of young families. It was a great night out and we'd see it again in a heartbeat. read more

Tonight was my first Roller Derby and it was a Doubleheader! I love it! Cheap and entertaining. I can't think of anything better for $10 nowadays. I mean, live action rough and tumble girls on skates! No other spectator sport costs so little and gives so much! Plus, you can partake of the spirits while watching these girls get down and dirty. Yes, that means there's beer, beer and more beer! Beer is fairly priced. Does watching these girls work up your appetite? If so, you're in luck! There is plenty of Stadium style concession food. They sell hot dogs, hot soft pretzels, popcorn and nachos but not only plain nachos...here in Nashville you get the pleasure of BBQ Nachos....Yummy! Food is pretty fairly priced but drinks will get you...$3 for bottled drinks including water and over $3 for fountain drinks. It's very crowded inside which makes it even hotter so you have to buy cold drinks or beer to keep cool. Take a free program; it can double as a fan! read more

We rented out this venue for an event and it was a cool place. I am surprised that they have ramps instead of stairs to get up to the multiple levels. It was weird but easier on my knees. This place was beat up and run down. There were spider webs and and ants everywhere. Plus the a/c wasn't cranking as it should. Each of the rooms that we used were noisy and dingy. Definitely not a fan of this place. However, there was one cool thing... the walls along the venue were lined with old ticket posters showing who played there. It was incredible to see artists ranging from Elvis Presley, The Jackson 5, Young Jeezy, Journey, Prince and so many more. read more

This is definitely the place to be if you are in the know. The one time I was here I ended up standing right next to Nicole Kidman which was kind of cool. PBR tallboys are the drink of choice for the fans here. I was fortunate enough to get a glimpse of this world when visiting Nashville with a friend of mine, Art Q. Find him on yelp. I cannot tell you how much fun it is to go to the Nashville Rollergirls matches. Held at Municipal Auditorium downtown, with a sadly too-short season of once-a-month matchups, these local girls kick so much butt its unbelievable. They provide booklets with the cast of the rollergirls and also a lesson on how the matchups work...though I am still figuring that out. You can sit in the chairs around the small arena or in the "suicide seats" right on the floor...at your own risk of course....you may end up with a rollergirl in your lap, which considering how brutal these matchups can be isn't necessarily a good thing. But they are so much fun to watch and the names of the girls, and the refs, are hysterical ("Throb Zombie" and "Acute Angel" and so on). It's only $15 to go and its a great local club that also supports local charities. I absolutely support any organization that does that. Check out their website for the next matchup.
