Our server Alison was very friendly, we had a laugh with her and she was great at her job. I was chuffed to find out that Dunham Massey Brewing Company were only five miles from where I live, so on a crisp, sunny weekday morning (I was on annual leave, not AWOL from the office) I hopped into the car and into the wilds of Altrincham. There's a half-mile single track road to get to it, so be careful when driving. The brewery and shop are both in the same building with the former on the ground floor and the latter upstairs via the side entrance. Their shop is really well stocked and the guy who served me was very welcoming. I picked up a case of 12 bottles of their 'Cheshire IPA' for less than £26 and left a very happy customer. So when you have something like this practically on your doorstep, cut out the middleman and buy straight from the source!

Aside from a beautiful Manor House (run by the National Trust, an entry fee applies) and sprawling grounds with free roaming deer, it's also home to one of the North West's most exciting microbreweries. Dunham Massey beers are a fixture at many beer festivals and can be found in a handful of local pubs and restaurants, including The Fat Loaf. However, your best bet is to come here and buy them direct from the brewery shop. Believe me, they're worth it! My favourites are the Milk Stout, Choc Cherry Mild, Treacle Treat and Winter Warmer, all of which are available for between £2 and £2.50 per bottle. To my knowledge, they don't offer brewery tours here yet. But as soon as they do, I'll be first in the queue!

There is a fair-sized car park, guarded by a large owl and a bear, both carved from huge tree stumps. The pub itself looks as though it has been completely refurbished, with taste, a few days ago and it is friendly and welcoming. The drinks selection is superb with all the usual national brands and at least five quality real ales on offer. The food menu seems a little expensive until you see what is actually being served - we were lucky enough to sample complementary sandwiches and the best chips I have ever tasted. Those eating their main meals seemed more than happy with them and I was even tempted to order something even though it was only a couple of hours since having my main meal of the day at home! There are children's and pensioners' menus advertised and a Sunday Carvery. We will be back, with the family next time!

A real traditional boozer, what I love about The Roebuck is the feeling of camaraderie amongst the regulars and the Landlords who make it their mission to create an inviting and friendly atmosphere, although occasinoally this can make you feel like you're gate-crashing a private party. However I don't think it would take long to become more familiar. In the summer I happened upon an amazing open air gig in the garden, lots of classic American and British rock songs and a great atmosphere as the sun went down. It was totally unexpected!
