What a lovely place this is, a real hub of the community. You don't have to be Irish to go here but…read moreif you are it helps! I have fond memories of going here as a child normally at family get togethers at Christmas and New Year. The place has always been very welcoming and caters for parties, wakes or any other occasion you could think of. Sheehy way (where the club is located) was named after Mayor Sheehy who did much for all the towns people especially the early Irish migrant workers who came to the town in the 1950's and '60's and helped turn it into the major industrial centre it is today. The club often has bands and other gigs going on and most are open to the public. They catered for my Fathers funeral at quite short notice even though they were officially full. This is typical of the friendly nature of the staff here who will go the extra mile to help out and they honestly did. There is always a warm welcome here for all and plenty of genuine craic, not like the fake Irish bars known as O'Neills of which unfortunately there is one in Slough high st. (and thats one too many) which has about as much appeal as a sewer. Slainte.

As a Manchester City supporter, I always enjoy a trip to Vicarage Road, not just because of our…read moreexcellent record here of late, but the fact it is a great stadium to visit, just a short walk away from Watford's town centre, where there are plenty of bars (as well as retail and restaurants) to head in before the game. The stadium was opened in 1922 and has a capacity of 22,200, pretty small for a Premier League ground but a decent ground for a club the size of Watford. Away fans are situated in the Vicarage Road Stand, this is usually split in half, half was given to the Watford fans, half to the away fans. Other stands are named after Sir Elton John (Yes that Elton John, he used to be the club's Chairman!) and the clubs most successful manager, Graham Taylor. The stadium looks good, I find the red and yellow seats are unique. I had a fantastic view from the stadium, and they seemed to provide some entertainment and music before the game. The hospitality from the stewards was great, they tried their best to share a laugh and a joke, and help out all supporters. I find the idea of the Vicarage Roadies pretty cool too, these are fans who volunteer at the game to make the experience better for everyone, it makes the stadium feel more like a community aspect, having a friendly face locals can recognise. Due to the size of the stadium, the away allocation was just under a 1/3 lower than usual, and they did charge the maximum price (£30) for a ticket, which was probably the most I paid all season, but still, the price is reasonable for 90 minutes of Premier League football. 4* - A nice stadium. I hope I have many more visits here to come.

First-Hand Experience: More info about my personal experience at this stadium - I haven't been here in about 7 years, but it was a nice, sweet, cute stadium when I used to come as a kid. Always one of the least-intimidating places, I'm not sure why. Was it the yellow kits, or the fact that Liverpool bought their talent in the old days. No, it's the fact that Elton John co-owned the club! I remember thinking, oh, wow, how yellow and red and cute this place is. Cute is the word. This is one stadium you won't get beaten up in, and you won't feel too intimidated or get a headache from the noise of the crowd. Now that it is a Premier League stadium I am sure I will be back at some point soon. I've been to most UK & US stadiums, due to lifelong obsessions with travel, sport & especially footy (soccer to Americans). Born & raised in England, I followed Oxford United (hometown team) to stadia all over the country at away games, and later Liverpool (fave team) around. Every stadium review - like all my reviews - are from first-hand personal experience, usually from several visits. In 2011, I was on music tour in the UK, and visited most stadiums for fun in my spare time. As recently as Fall 2014, when I was "stuck" in UK for 3 months, I went to hundreds yet again while travelling. I have pictures of me at most, which I'll post later. Also, when back in UK I'll take more pix, and add more stadia! *** return to regular review *** It's a 20k stadium with open corners (which suck), meaning it's not the best in terms of atmosphere or intimidation and the wind blows through it. Another is named after their previous owner Elton John. The seats are yellow and red and that's probably the best thing about it.

Also runs a cinema club that plays films that have been in mainstream cinema for a couple of months for a very low price. Would be good to see more recent release films & theatre productions there. There is parking behind Coxeters, although this is for a charge if the man is there collecting the money. If he isnt there you can park for free! It is also free in the evening. The snooker club is only accessible by walking up a flight of stairs, so could be a bit tricky if you are in a wheelchair etc. Although there may possibly be a lift due to new equality legislation, I havnt noticed one though! There are quite a few snooker/pool tables which are well lit, and a bar which serves all the usual drinks. The atmosphere is very friendly and relaxed.

Visited with friend who lives in Wimbledon and was happy to drive us out to Brooklands, about 30…read moremin. We had intended to stay 2 hours, ended up staying 5. The highlights were the Concorde, 2 VC10s, multiple other historically significant civilian planes and also many military aircraft, mainly fighters. The auto section taught me a lot about the early car speed record holders. Many models in the museum are kept in working order. One hanger is reserved for an aircraft manufacturing hands-on exhibit. The docents know a lot; one of them even had worked there in the 1960s back when it was Vickers. The cafetaria food is tasty too.

The Brooklands Museum was so much more than I expected. I haven't been in years and don't remember…read moremuch being there but now they have a 'Concorde Experience' (a 30 min guided tour, for an extra £5), a 4D simulator (including red arrows, also an extra cost), a formula 1 simulator, the London Bus Museum (I lurve buses so this was exciting for me and I think the collection is just as good as London Transport Museum, and it's bigger) and, soon, a new hangar for a massive aeroplane production exhibition. Outdoor planes includes the VC10 which is worth the entrance price along for its hilarious velvet toilet. I was also surprised to see a pretty extensive bicycle collection, and of course the old cars are plentiful given this was the first purpose built motor racing/testing track in the world, before it became one of the biggest plane factories. The docents are brilliant - there's loads of them and they are all really friendly and knowledgeable. It really enhances the experience. Was sorry to read that another visitor had a hard time with a volunteer being mean to his 3 year old, fwiw there were some slightly older children (maybe 5 - 6) on my Concorde tour that the guide made a particular fuss of, making sure they had a great time, and I didn't see any signs of children being anything but welcome in the whole place, so hopefully that's a one off and I hope that poor child has recovered! There's a cafe doing hot food and a special Brooklands ale my bf described as 'excellent' which is pretty rare from him so give that a try! With Mercedes Benz World just around the corner, this is totally worth the trip out from London - Brooklands alone will take up half a day.

The Theatre was built in the 1600's by Christopher Wren and has been in active use ever since by the university, amateur players and conference organizers. If you can see a show here, you will be amazed by the interior of the building. Extraordinarily precise baroque architecture and perfect acoustics. A great venue for musicals. If you can see a musical here, i would recommend it. One word of advice: the seats aren't particularly comfortable (sometimes hard wooden benches), so if you can smuggle a cushion in, good for you!

A 70 foot span, no Gothic vaulting or columns to hold it up - the ceiling of the Sheldonian Theatre…read morein Oxford. This was in 1663 and a real poser for Sir Christopher Wren - all before pocket calculators and Google. How did he do it?? Well, come and see for yourself, climb up to the Cupola and stand on the very ceiling - you might not want to thud across it, knowing it's 340 years old and just a big bunch of space for 60 feet below. If you're interested, Wren actually achieved the 70 foot feat by creating a matrix of trussses, which rotate and interlock with each other, a bit like weaving - yes woven wooden beams and that was a first! Just hope it'll last! At least long enough for your safe visit. You can be reassured that when inspected, the surveyors considered it likely to '...remain in such good Repair and Condition, for one hundred or two hundred Years yet to come' (1720). Mmmmm. (It has been checked more recently, by the way.) Up in the Cupola itself, wonderful views of Oxford across all points of the compass. And all this, without even mentioning the imposing Theatre hall itself. Look at the other side of the ceiling, from bottom up and view the magnificent painting by Robert Streaker, created from 1668-1669. Look out for Rapine, with her 'fiery eyes, grinning Teeth, sharp Twangs, her Hands imbrewed in Blood, holding a Bloody Dagger in one hand, in the other a Burning Flambeau..' She's nice, but maybe think twice about asking her on a date. The Theatre is the ceremonial hall of the University and is named after Gilbert Sheldon, Warden of All Saints College and later Archbishop of Canterbury, who paid for its building between 1664-9. It was the first major design (did I forget to mention that before?) of Sir Christopher Wren, Professor of Astronomy (1632-1723). It is now used for lectures and concerts. They have several enclosures at different prices, from the private dining areas and diamond enclosures, through to the cheap and friendly grandstands. I've been to quite a few of the areas, and I can recommend all of them. The staff are friendly, and you can place bets at both the Tote and at independent tic tac men. All in all, it's a good day out, and it doesn't have to cost the earth. Yes, you can bet your month's wagesbut you don't have to. I go and bet a quid or two on each race, and assume I will lose. Any wins are a bonus, and it can still be a reasonably priced fun day out.

Inside there is numerous bars and eating on different levels. Lots of totes inside and lots of bookies outside including Barry Dennis from ch4 somedays. There is a good restaraunt area to have a fancy meal with a great view of the track. Clean and tidy and the staff are good and always clearing up. Sometimes they put on activities for children.
