I waited a few weeks to write this review and I'm glad I did. I have thick, wavy hair and I love it- I never blow-dry or straighten it- but I was trying to grow it out and it was starting to look weird so I decided to cut it short again. I didn't wash my hair after working out the morning I was getting my hair cut since I assumed that they'd wash my hair and I don't like to over-wash it. I think I saw Lauren (really wish I could remember! sorry!) and she didn't want to wash my hair because she was going to cut it dry. From the beginning I felt a little over-powered like this was going to happen no matter what I said. She also basically rejected my idea of cutting my hair short and said she was just going to trim the ends*. Now, someone in Gainesville had dry-cut my hair before and I didn't really see what the big deal was. It wasn't an especially amazing haircut and for $50 I wanted to get the 24 hour post hair-cut style bonus. But I generally make a habit of going with the flow at salons because I figure that people who think about hair 40 hours a week probably have more informed opinions than I do, so I let her do her thing. While the whole experience (it took like an hour WITHOUT wash or blow dry! For $45, that's pretty attentive) was a little off-putting at the time because I was thinking "oh why can't I just say something, this isn't what I wanted!" I have to admit....it was the best haircut I've gotten in Gainesville. Definitely not the best walk-out-of-the-salon look (my hair had to be flat ironed before it was cut), but totally worth it for the weeks (and I assume months) of totally manageable automatically styled hair. I just wake up every morning and it looks like I sat down and styled my hair for an hour (which I'm actually not capable of doing, so especially lucky for me). I used to wear my hair up every day because even though it's naturally great hair, it just looked kind of weird down. So yeah, now it's perfect. I almost feel like I'm begrudgingly saying that because I was so convinced that I was just having my arm twisted during the appointment and I would be right in the end but nope, another win for hair-stylists-know hair-better-than-people-who-just-happen-to-have-hair! *She did tell me that if in the next week after getting used to how my long hair looked with its new layers I still wanted it shorter, I could come in and she'd do it for no extra money. I've had my hair cut twice by Melanie in the year I've been in Gainesville. She's great - she takes the time to understand what you're looking for and has good ideas for how to cut and style your hair to make it look its best. After a few years of wearing my fine hair in "long layers," Melanie pointed out that cutting the layers shorter would actually make my hair look fuller, and she was right. Her services are extremely reasonably priced. The salon has its own free parking right in front, so you don't have to pay for street parking downtown. My only complaint is that it took a couple of weeks to get in for an appointment, as the salon seems to have been busy this spring. So my advice is to call well in advance of when you'd like your appointment. Highly recommended! read more

Best. Haircut. Ever. I went in with a mess, and told Melanie I wanted a wash and wear haircut that wouldn't get in my eyes, kept the blond pieces, and looked good. She was slow, so you may have to wait at the end of the day, as she appears to give each client her full attention. She has a real eye for what will look good. read more

This is the 1st time ever I write a review. Just because I am positively shocked. I came from Russia where women are obsessed with their looks and pay a lot to get a good cut and color. I had bad experiences in the US before I read all these good reviews and came to Lauren, Lauren is AMAZING. She does the best hair cut on my curly hair I have ever got in my 36 years of life. She is very gentle and careful, she always asks what you want and never cuts more than is needed. She is very energetic, gives her energy to you and works VERY WELL. I am very happy I have found her. Love this place! I went to Andrew, who not only was a pleasure to chat with while he cut my hair but also did a great job. I have long hair with growing out bangs and he immediately understood my desire for a simple cut that didn't take off much length but kept it from being a mop. My sister just went here to get a haircut and she came home in tears! The stylist failed to listen to what she wanted, which was little to no length removed, but the stylist hacked off 3 1/2 inches! My sister has to go somewhere else to get her layers fixed up as well, definitely not the best experience :// read more

I made an appointment and brought a picture of the style I wanted. The stylist Andrew seemed nice and started doing my hair, but when it was finished it wasn't really what I was going for. I tried to explain this nicely and ask if he could just trim it a little more the way I wanted it. He got kind of defensive and roughly cut some layers in, all the time insisting that "it looks like the picture" and "this is what you told me you wanted". It seemed like he was in a hurry to get me out of the salon. I wasn't thrilled with my hair, but I thought if I went home and washed it, it might sort of fall into place the way I wanted. It didn't and I was really upset that it looked so bad (not just the wrong hairstyle, but a choppy, uneven hair cut at this point). I called the salon less than an hour after I left to see if I could come back in to have Andrew fix it up a little. Andrew told them I could schedule a new appointment and pay full price again for a new haircut. With tip, this haircut was over $60. One of the managers offered to refund me my money instead. I'm glad the salon acted professionally because I wasn't impressed with the stylist. read more

I had an appointment with Melanie yesterday and I have to say that she gave me one of the best haircuts I've ever had. My appointment was at 2pm and she was ready as soon as I walked in the door. She listened to my description of what kind of cut I wanted and as she thoroughly checked out the texture and condition of my hair, made some suggestions and comments that helped clarify exactly what was possible and what her plan was for my cut. The consultation lasted about 10-15 minutes. She then shampooed my hair and then proceeded to cut. I watched her intently as she made little adjustments and tweaks that would give me the layered lob cut that I described. The actual haircut took at least an hour, maybe a little more. She then dried my hair and finished cutting it, getting it just exactly right. We had a nice chat while she worked but she never lost her focus or got distracted. Her full attention was on the task at hand. When she finished, I was amazed at how great my hair looked! It was almost as if it wasn't my hair at all. It was perfect!! Because it started to rain, she didn't really style it, which would have been a total waste of time, but next time I'll definitely have her finish it the way she wants. Maybe I'll learn something new. When I got home, my husband immediately noticed my hair and said it looked wonderful (he usually never notices anything, lol!). The next day, I used the curling iron like I usually do and was very happy when the outcome looked like something out of a magazine, I do not lie!! I ran my hands through the waves to loosen the curls and the result was the perfect beachy head of hair. So this was an absolutely excellent experience for me. I found Melanie through Yelp and told her so. My son and daughter-in-law found a great salon in San Francisco that way so I thought I'd try it. I wasn't happy with my last haircut but finding a new stylist is such a frustrating and often disappointing experience that I was very nervous before meeting Melanie. She completely put me at ease and the way she handled the consultation let me know she knew what she was doing. I can recall only one other haircut I've had that was anywhere near as good. And that was at least 20 years ago and in another city. In writing this review, I wanted to describe my experience and hopefully repay Melanie for her excellent work. This was no ordinary haircut...it is a work of art!! I will definitely make Melanie my stylist from now on. And the cut was reasonably priced and within my budget. A very good thing. It was worth the two week wait for an appointment. No doubt someone as good as Melanie is very busy. And it's obvious she takes what she does very seriously. You can't go wrong having Melanie cut your hair. She's an artist!! read more
