I had the pleasure of stopping by the Seafood Bar after my overseas flight to Amsterdam. I was warmly welcomed by the staff, who seated me right away and even made some great recommendations. The meal was so good that I decided to stop there again on my last night before taking a river boat down the Rhine, Fortunately for me, they were celebrating the anniversary of their opening and handed me a glass of bubbly as soon as I walked in. We had a wonderful dinner with family (group of 6) here, and Romy, our waitress took good care of us. Morgan helped with our whiskey and wine selection. The overall service was great. My wife and another of our party had the Fish & Chips, which they loved. I had the fresh catch, Dorado, and while they cook it whole, and bring it to you that way, they were very accommodating and filleted it right at the table for me... and it was delicious. I was a bit disappointed with this place. We came right after the Heineken experience and it was just a 3 minute walk. The pictures looked good and the reviews looked really good. I would recommend you make a reservation as it can get crowded here, but when we were there on a Friday night, right before King's day, the restaurant wasn't full. More like 70%. We ordered the oysters, clams and lobster soup. Both were good. My wife ordered the scampi and I ordered the calamari with chips. This is where things kind of disappointed me. First off, it took a while before we were able to place our order. Then after placing our order, we waited a good while before the food came out. Luckily we ordered some appetizers to start or else we would be starving. We asked for bread and our server felt bad for the long wait that he didn't charge us for it. But while eating, I did notice some tables were getting ignored and not checked on. When our main dishes came out, I can't really say that I enjoyed it very much. The calamari was just plain and nothing special. However, the scampi that my wife got was bland. It's like they forgot to season it with salt or pepper. I had to get up and grad S&P from another table to make it edible. Even with the S&P added, it still didn't have much taste to it. Don't get me wrong, it was a giant bowl of pasta, but such a shame that there was no flavor. With the slow service and food being mediocre, I don't know if I can recommend this place. Came here as a group of 5 after a convention. Was very happy with the service. Of note this is a local chain with several locations. Their seafood is very fresh and delicious. Their main location around centraal is very busy but this one in De Pijp is less boisterous which also makes it much easier to book a table. I ordered the vongele which was more of a starter but still a decent size. If you're an American you might feel the portion was small but I thought it allows us to try more of the menu. GOOD FROM FAR, FAR FROM GOOD It was a frigid Amsterdam "summer" day. Rain threatened to pelt down from grey skies so I ducked in a familiar door way. I am all about second chances In fairness, it was Sunday and the establishment had had a busy day I'd planned on the mixed grill. And grilled octopus to start. Perhaps even a whole lobster. No mixed grill. Then I asked for soup. No soup. A little voice in my head whispered "tread lightly, dear boy" So I opted for 4 appetizers instead. Grilled octopus, roasted scallops, calamari and prawns in garlic butter. Verdict? The staff are warm and helpful. My waitress couldn't have been more kind and considerate. I asked for a warm corner to cozy up in and she walked the length and breadth of the established to "test" the warmth of the air. First class across the board. The food? That's a whole other story. The précis? The grilled octopus: thoughtfully cooked, and VERY salty. Palatable but salt The scallops: finely cooked. The mashed potatoe and sliver of mushroom (or whatever it is) were completely unremarkable The calamari: I should confess that I have a "thing" about crispy crispy batter on calamari and found the SFB rendition competently prepared and utterly devoid of taste. And finally, the shrimp in garlic butter: (big sigh). I am far from being a Cordon Bleu chef and how ingredients like garlic, butter and shrimp can be rendered to chewy cardboard in oil is beyond me. The garlic? Missing in action. The butter? Tasteless. And yes we tried -- in vain i hasten to add -- to jazz it up with salt. The taste was missing in action Maybe I was saved by Providence from ordering a "proper" main? The rating, people is for the service If you know little about seafood and just want to hang out for a few hours in an Instagrammable restaurant? SFB is the place for you. The long wait-times are proof of it. We had a reservation for 8pm and they couldn't squeeze us in any earlier. Even our 8pm reservation was delayed quite a bit. For 4 people, we definitely over-ordered. The Mixed Grill portion of the Combination is a must! I did like the "Seafood Bar" portion too but there were some things I could've skipped so I would prefer to maybe pick and choose what to go next time. The Garlic Crushed Potatoes were a bit of a let down; they weren't crispy or had a lot of garlic flavor. I was adding the herb butter on them for more flavor. Some of the freshest best seafood we've ever had. Oysters to start were so good! Tender and tasty...just perfect. Next we had the seafood grill for two and it was amazing. It had calamari, mussels, shrimp, salmon, flounder, another fish that was tender and delectable but we didn't know the name, even had some crayfish. The cocktails and wine were also excellent. Fast forward 2 weeks later and we were in Amsterdam last Monday having a fabulous seafood dinner on a Monday night. The place was packed and people were waiting outside to be seated. So glad I made that reservation. We were greeted by a friendly hostess who showed us the fresh catches of the day. Once we were seated, we had not one, but 2 wait staffs who waited on us. Asked for recommendations for where to eat from some of the locals and were directed to The Seafood Bar. We were not disappointed, although a bit more expensive then what I'm used to, I would recommend trying it while in Amsterdam as you really do get what you pay for and it was extremely fresh and delicious. We got the seafood Fruits de Mer, which is an amazing spread of seafood crustaceans and shellfish. also tried the Fritto misto (deep fried fish, shrimp. and calamari which was good but the star of the show was definitely the Fruits de Mer. The restaurant itself is set up to look a little like a fish market with all the fresh fish they use to cook and serve on display in the front counter. This is my second visit to The Seafood Bar, but my first visit to the location in De Pijp. Once again I found the food to be excellent with solid choices on the menu. I ordered the battered fish. Everything was fresh, very tasty and well presented. The decor is modern but suitable and the atmosphere was pleasant. The staff was friendly and attentive. The menu has a recommendation for pairing wine with the meal of your choice but we opted for a bottle. The suggestion by our waitress was spot on. The prices are reasonable for Amsterdam. I came here because of the rave reviews and was disappointed. The razor clams have sand in every other clam. The king prawns were mushy and not fresh. One third of the mussels served were still closed in the shell. The lobster and shrimp were fresh. The food was not great, but that was nothing compared to the terrible service. The waitress was very rude, she made the accusation that my credit card broke her machine and pushed me to use cash or another card. I have traveled to many countries and the card has never failed me, I don't know if she could say the same about her machine. The crab tasted previously frozen, and the periwinkles were...strange, but the shrimp, prawns, oysters, razor clams, cockles, and mussels (especially the mussels!) were excellent. Our family had a fantastic meal here following a busy day in Amsterdam. The restaurant is bright and open which makes it very inviting after a long day touring the wonderful city. The seafood was fresh and perfect in its preparation. We shared Netherlands oysters - our first time trying oysters from the area. They were very salty and briny and lacked the sweetness we prefer. However I enjoyed trying them. One in our party had their fish and chips which were excellent. We also enjoyed the mixed grill which including lobster, mussels, scampi, shrimp, and two fish fillets. Served with a salad and fries it was a very hearty meal. Another in our party had the king crab legs which they said were great. The food was wonderful, the seafood fresh, plentiful, and very affordable. The location in De Pijp was quiet when we went, bright and full of light.
