Our friends, who we traveled to Palm Springs with are big fans of the artist Shag. They have numerous pieces of his art throughout their home. When in Palm Springs they will always stop by his store/gallery, The Shag Store. If we are with them, we'll go also. We're not quiet the fans they are but we do enjoy his art, and we like to browse the store. On this occasion Shag himself was at the store. He was hosting a free cocktail party and meet and greet for anyone who stopped in. He was signing any pieces that fans brought in or bought. Our friends didn't bring anything, but they did purchase something and had him sign it so that was cool for them. Becky and I wandered around the store and took in the artwork while our friends enjoyed their meet and greet with Shag. I highly recommend The Shag Store when in Palm Springs. How can you not love The Shag Store? I have been coming here since I lived in California. My partner had never been to Palm Springs, so when we planned a trip, I was thrilled I would be able to show him this store. There are so many wonderful pieces in the collection. There are also many types of art from which to choose. Like anyone else who loves Shag, the colors and retro design are so appealing. And the bonus for me is Shag has done a lot of Disney pieces. Many of those are still for sale, but I kept hearing "no" in my ear. We did come home with some barware, so I chalk that up as a win. Let me start by saying that, while I do like the art, that's not what I'm here to review. This is about the gallery as a business, and frankly, it's a great one! For better or for worse, Shag (and/or his very smart team) has quite a commercial eye, and is extremely skilled at turning each piece of original art into a variety of very accessible production pieces, encompassing a huge range of price points. His exuberant work is appealing to young and old, making a multi-generational visit to the store into a family bonding experience. Even your teenage relatives might walk away with a new appreciation for the elders. The staff, of course, is critical to the experience, and they do not disappoint. While I only spoke with one person at any length, I was truly impressed with his knowledge of Palm Springs history. Everyone was down to earth and having fun -- not even a hint of pretentious gallery snobbishness. Everyone will feel welcome here. read more

I am over Shag! Horrible, or no, Customer Service. Rude Staff! Will never shop at shag again. Live in Palm Springs & will tell others about my bad experience. I love PS! Bought a gift to be sent out almost two weeks before event. Never was given shipping confirmation. Had to contact store to get info. Remained very patient. Was told by two different staff members gift would be shipped in time. Then, was given insufficient shipping/tracking on package. By that time, gift would never arrive in time for event. Asked for refund. This weirdly, became an unnecessary, and complicated process. A run around. Had to wait over two weeks to get definitive answer on full process of refund. How it works! Unreal. Should not be that hard folks! Never had a real problem before with retail purchase. Wish I paid cash... Finally, no one apologized for the fact they assured me gift would arrive on time. Their mess up! nAnd, went on to try - again try - and put blame on me. Man yelled at me. Then he never did what he said he would do regarding further communication In email. A few years ago, the Shag Store sponsored a Yelp Event during the Palm Springs Spring Break and offered a great grand prize (won by Michelangelo S/Sacramento) Today, The Shag Store hosted a cocktail party in line with their Christmas Sale. I love the Shag Store! Shag's art is beautifully mid century and unique. The store itself is very clean and the aesthetic of colors and style is perfect. You can buy anything from a $15k piece of framed art to a pair of $15 socks with Shag's art on them. I opted for the Shag Palm Springs coffee table book and a tiki record with his art on the cover. Perfect to add to my mid century decor. The employees working that day were very nice and friendly, and the entire experience was great; even the little dog who works there was adorable and let me pet it. We went over to the Shag store for an introductory evening of one of Shags current paintings and lithographs the introduction of this particular painting was very exciting people were lined up outside the building to see it for the grand opening. Shag was there himself signing different items as well as people who purchased the lithographs. There is live music there was also an open bar it was a wonderful evening and the store is absolutely amazing. It is quite obvious that shag has a love for the people and for the area of Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley. We were able to make several purchases that evening and shag was happy to sign each and everyone with a smile and sometimes with a little story. This place was recommended to me by my good buddy Mr. Ryan C. He's got a lot of this art in his house, mostly the Universal Monster themed Art. The best way I can explain this style of art is animated, bright colored Palm Springs, 60's, modern... now take that word salad and throw it in a blender and hit frappe! I really dig this style of design, it comforting, fun to stare at and it looks great hanging on your wall. This time around I bought a set of tall drinking glasses fully adorned in gold and a underwater fishing scene. They look amazing and its a great way to sip a cocktail in style. Oh, I didn't know the artist who created all these familiar, colorful retro-hip paintings is actually nicknamed Shag. I just figured it was a comic Austin Powers reference. His real name is Josh Agle, and he's a prominent figure in the Lowbrow art movement. That's not an opinion, that's an actual underground art trend based on cartoon images steeped in punk, tiki culture, and underground comics. It's fun to look at, and as a baby boomer, it immediately reminded me of the Jetsons and the vintage futuristic space-age vibe inspired by the classic 1960's cartoon TV show. The SHAG store should be a must-stop if you're heading to Palm Springs. For one, there are a ton of great pieces on display, they have some unique gifts for the holidays, and you can peruse safely as they're taking all the necessary COVID-19 precautions during this unprecedented time. Even if you've been there over the past few months, they do change the artwork up as new stuff is released. How long you spend there is completely up to you. You can easily spend five-minutes or 20-minutes depending on how much you like the art. We spent a longer time as he's one of our favorite artists, so we definitely gawked, took a ton of photos, and shopped for some Christmas gifts for friends/family too. The staff is super friendly and helpful and can answer any questions you have about current and past pieces. If you're not already, I highly recommend following the store on social as they always unveil some new masterpieces, share upcoming promotions, and when things are back to normal, that's where they list their upcoming events happening as well. If you're looking for one-of-a-kind art pieces with amazing pop-culture references, I definitely recommend having some SHAG in your house. Though some of the prices are on the higher end, they're all amazing conversation starters and really tie a room together. Not only are there original prints for sale but there is also glassware and some small furniture pieces. The staff there is super nice and answered any questions I had. What a fun place to visit. I've been familiar with Shag's work for several years now so it was nice to visit in person. The cheapest thing I could find was a set of glasses for $90 so I went with that. The art is great but in this economy I can either buy one of his framed prints for $2,500 or a tank of gas, but not both. Still, I have to admire his subject material and presentation. There's a reason he's so famous and I was happy to bring back a couple of other items besides the glasses. The best part isn't even the store itself but all the streetside banners for Palm Springs going down the main drag. Who, but Shag, should be the artistic representative of Palm Springs? I heard he had designed a tiki handbag and I needed it...so my husband did what any good husband would do for his slightly spoiled wife...he drove me there!
