Our family has been buying from this market for many years now and we've only had great experiences. This place can be busy depending on the time of the year so quantities on certain fish/shellfish may be limited. I advise you to call them to check on availability before arriving, especially when buying any type of bulk. You will have a much better experience doing this. Also, getting here early is always recommended. The store offers a great selection of local products- wines, beers, seasonings, gifts and many more. It's fun to browse around and find something new you didn't notice before. FYI, I just left your place and had the unpleasant experience of dealing with a jerk name BOB!!! I think this is an opportunity to check in with this guy and remind him of a few things. He is in dyer need of customer service training. He may be unaware that customers pay his boss so he can get paid, so being rude and condescending is not an option. He also needs a reality check as to his position and know what it means to be resolution ready and not combative. He made false factual statements telling me my fish didnt smell rotten when he didn't sell me my fish. An easy resolution would be to have me bring the fish to confirm if it was good to consume. Instead he was combative and condescending basically calling me a LIAR! I just didn't want yo eat bad fish. He refused to give me any names of hire up over the phone. I drove all the way to your location to get the names in which he refused. Honestly this guy's ego is way to big to be selling fish and it seems he has a small gut complex. He also made reference to your Ukrainian workers saying they do not speak good enough English to talk yo me, which is not true, that's not cool to say. Bottom line he is a jerk. read more

I'm feeling bittersweet about this review, because sometimes you get what you pay for and other times it's a total miss. I've ordered steamed blue crabs and shrimp on three separate occasions, and I've only been impressed on one of them. I call ahead every time to ask what size crabs they have and whether they are male/female. The first time they told me #1 Jimmies (male) for $30 steamed; however, when I picked them up they were $18 and turned out to be a mix of small male crabs. The second time I was told the same thing, and I actually did receive a dozen #1 jimmies. They were delicious and the seasoning was a nice spicy kick! At this point I figured the first time was a fluke and decided to order them last weekend. When I ordered them they said $30 steamed for #1 jimmies. I got two dozen and paid the fisherman in cash right in the store. What I ended up getting was tiny female crabs. To top it off the girls at the counter said they didn't see me hand the man cash and made me argue it with them. I think the main problem is lack of communication between the fishermen outside and the girls inside. A lot of them are also foreign so I don't think they understand crab sizes and availability. This is the last time I'll be here because I can't keep going through a hit or miss. read more

They all have the same owner, but Bubba's has a different menu than The Back Deck and The Shellfish Co is a seafood market. Just to clarify! This review is about The Shellfish Co. The market has an array of fresh seafood available for purchase in large or small quantities. Recently we've started buying a lot of their wild salmon. We used to buy our salmon from a market in Hilltop, but we've found that the salmon from The Shellfish Co is noticeably tastier & ridiculously fresh. Salmon has a tendency to be a bit fishy (in my opinion), but NOT this salmon! The Shellfish Co seafood market also sells wine & other gifty items. You can buy wine from the market & take it out on the deck to drink/dine at The Back Deck restaurant for a $10 corking fee. read more

I picked this place for my B-Day cause it's like a family to us! You can never go wrong- ocean, boats and great food! Stuff and super friendly and very attentive, place just has this great vibe and we come here every weekend! I was happy to share my B-Day with this crowd! I frequent this establishment a lot. Over 20 years to include Bubbas. However today I had a disappointing experience. The owners son-in-law was working at the register, I requested and purchased a dozen oysters. As I was choosing the fresh oysters, from the bad, said man told me I was not allowed to choose the oysters "they come as they are". He rushed me through the process. I was not able to see the transaction. Once I arrived home I realized I only had eight oysters, (4 short of a dozen). Not only was I shorted on my order, he was very rude and disrespectful. My last time buying from this place. There are plenty more fishermen to purchase from in Virginia Beach. Check out the corner of Virginia Beach Blvd and Great neck on the weekends. TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. Ordered a bushel of #1 jimmies for Fourth of July family celebration, prepaid, and set to be picked up at 4 PM. Arrived at 4PM and were told there were no jimmies NOR was our order ready, even a mixed or all female bushel. We were told that they'd "tried to call all day" but never left a message and we got no answers as to why none was left. We then settled for a bushel of female crabs which they proceeded to over cook. Silver lining was the manager we dealt with was sympathetic and offered a discount, but we felt the wool was pulled over our eyes a bit on this deal considering the other reviews they've received...especially reserving and paying for the bushel in advance. This was the second bad experience we've had ordering crabs here and will not be going back. read more

This is a review for the Shell Fish Company's outdoor fish market. It's small, but fulfills all my needs. Whenever, I'm in Virginia Beach my family likes to purchase fresh fish and crabs here -- unless we go fishing or crabbing ourselves. I've been coming here for the past few years and like how kitschy the shoppe is. Every time we come here we also have a great experience. Typically, when I buy crabs I definitely like to clean them myself. We steam them at home too with a mix of water and a good IPA. We usually purchase the "busted" female crabs at $11 a dozen or $65 a bushel. You should ask the fishermen at the Shell Fish Company how they like to cook their crabs -- you'll get some great suggestions for the best way to have them (ahem... Steamed in water first and then add the old bay). You can get much of what you need to cook with here, but I would suggest going to a nearby grocery store. You'll have more options at a reasonable price (The shoppe is more touristy in its prices and items). If you're wondering, I'll definitely come back here again. read more

Ordered a bushel of #1 crabs, got home and counted 46 crabs. Called the shellfish company and asked how many crabs I should get and was told 6 1/2 dozen, when I said we only got 46 the manager said oh well 36-60 is the norm. So full of shit! This place will rip you off! read more

Terrible customer service, even worse crabs. While visiting a family friend at Virginia Beach, I was introduced this place. We called ahead and examined the fish and crabs before purchasing. I trusted the Shellfish Company to sell fresh catch of the day, as they say so. HOWEVER, while I was inside paying for $60 worth of crabs, they mixed in rotten, stinky crabs. Because I live 3 hours away, I even purchased a styrofoam box and ice, only to find out at home that approximately 2/3 of the crabs were rotten bad. I opened every crab and most of them were terrible to the point of being inedible. I called The Shellfish company and after talking to 5 people, they insisted that the car ride is what must have made them go bad. Then how come 1/3 of the crabs were super fresh and alive?? Shouldn't they have all gone bad then?? In their styrofoam iced box in an AC'ed car?? The person I talked to, even after seeing pictures, insisted that everything was fresh catch of the day. He said they didn't look right, but that he could not do anything because the crabs are final sale. Shouldn't FRESH produce be final sale? The Shellfish Company sold rotten, inedible crabs to a customer that trusted their word for fresh seafood. I will not be returning. read more

I love the Shellfish Company! I stop in here a few times a week. I work a few doors down and enjoy walking around the waterfront and talking to the fishermen and taking in the views and getting some great seafood to eat at night on my 12 hr watch. I love the Deviled Crabs they have and I often get some fresh tuna salad or crabs to eat at work. I also love the clams casino and the fresh shrimp - from USA instead of what you get at most places - from Asia. They have a great wine selection and some great Kraft beers. I always love the fresh fish in the show case and have tried a lot here and it is always fresh. I have gotten the biggest Blue Claw crabs here I've ever seen and they were awesome!! I like the people that work here - they always are helpful and always go out of their way to help me and also suggest the best and freshest seafood. I would move in here if they would rent me a room upstairs!! Also - the old fishing boats here are a work of art and history and the back deck serves drinks and great seafood. I love this place. We preordered a bushel of crabs from this place. We requested they cook them and we scheduled to pick them up at 7pm. We picked them up and I was expecting freshly steamed hot crabs, but we got 100 dollars worth of cold crabs that had been steamed hours ago. I complained but was told all sales are final. The crabs were supposed to be a mixture of 1 and 2 size but I would say they were all 2 size (smaller). Also, the crabs were all busted so most of the claws had been snapped off and were at the bottom of the box. Try somewhere else. It's not worth it. read more

Just moved to the area was looking for a great seafood place, thought we had found one! Haha who was I kidding asked about purchasing a half bushel of crabs not to mention half of the workers do not speak clear English and the lack of their willingness to help sucked!! So was prepared to pay 85 dollars for a brown paper bag of left over cold crabs, at the register the worker slid my card and said sorry out internet is down do you have cash ummm no have credit card. The manager (Adam Howard) approaches and says I can take your card info and license info and run the number later no problem until when I asked if my info would be safe he snapped and said you don't have to get the crabs we will just take them back whatever dude take your cold, broken, and expensive crabs back and guarentee I will not be back and would give no stars if I could!!! read more

Sorry to say I have to addend my review. I have since been back to shellfish company twice in order to buy bushels of crab. The first time, the bushel of #2 crabs were very anemic- basically no meat in many of the crab. I understand they can only sell what the catch is from the day, which they don't necessarily have control over. No #1 or female crabs were available at that time. Today, I picked up a bushel of #1's ( a whopping 50 dollar premium over the #2's) hoping to ensure some meaty sizable crabs. Unfortunately I was dissapointed by 1/4 to 1/2 of the crabs being inedible with a funny smell and gray/dark color to the meat, making me suspicious that they were not fresh or dead before steaming. Now again I understand they can only sell what they get from their source but I feel at least some quality control is in order- especially when you are selling them as #1's at such a premium. I pre ordered a bushel of crabs on the third of July order to pick up the sixth of July , male crabs, was told one hundred dollars when I arrived at 10:45 am and the order was for 11am I was told they were not ready yet but they rung up my order and the bill was $180 for a bushel she told me that they jack up the price for the Fourth of July weekend, I said no way I was just told they were a hundred dollars, well some one told you wrong I then said I don't want them that is not the price I was told , by now it's 11am so I said I would just take two dozen of the crabs they were supposed to be steaming for me and she said sure$70 for two dozen COLD crabs that when we got home smelled so bad we had to toss most of them due to the fact they were pure mush. I have been a good customer of Shellfish for a while but NEVER again. I will never suggest it to any one again either. Don't go there is my suggestion.! I have the receipt to prove my transaction and how they tried to gouge me for $180 .rip off.....thinking of calling the BBB Monday. read more
