3.65 lbs of wild salmon from The Shellfish Co seafood market! YUM!
    Ellen D.

The building that houses The Shellfish Co (a seafood market) also contains The Back Deck (a restaurant / bar out on the back deck of the market). FYI: Bubba's Seafood Restaurant & Crabhouse is NEXT DOOR to The Shellfish Co / The Back Deck. They all have the same owner, but Bubba's has a different menu than The Back Deck and The Shellfish Co is a seafood market. Just to clarify! This review is about The Shellfish Co. The market has an array of fresh seafood available for purchase in large or small quantities. Recently we've started buying a lot of their wild salmon. We used to buy our salmon from a market in Hilltop, but we've found that the salmon from The Shellfish Co is noticeably tastier & ridiculously fresh. Salmon has a tendency to be a bit fishy (in my opinion), but NOT this salmon! The Shellfish Co seafood market also sells wine & other gifty items. You can buy wine from the market & take it out on the deck to drink/dine at The Back Deck restaurant for a $10 corking fee.

I picked this place for my B-Day cause it's like a family to us! You can never go wrong- ocean, boats and great food! Stuff and super friendly and very attentive, place just has this great vibe and we come here every weekend! I was happy to share my B-Day with this crowd! It's very picturesque place if you like water and boats I love their Oysters- always fresh and sooo good! It think it's the best place for fresh seafood in Virginia Beach!

It's a shame this place has zero customer service. I totally understand the busy scenario but to be ignored by the server and waiting for 10 minutes is not a joke at all. What a waste of time...the view is absolutely stunning though!!!

    Sorting fish
    Q L.

Come in the morning and watch them sort the fish from the boat. Buy fish at wholesale prices. Today I got croacker, spot, butterfish and red snapper.

Comparison between a bad crab and a fresh one, both of which the shellfish company insisted were fresh catch of the day.

Terrible customer service, even worse crabs. While visiting a family friend at Virginia Beach, I was introduced this place. We called ahead and examined the fish and crabs before purchasing. I trusted the Shellfish Company to sell fresh catch of the day, as they say so. HOWEVER, while I was inside paying for $60 worth of crabs, they mixed in rotten, stinky crabs. Because I live 3 hours away, I even purchased a styrofoam box and ice, only to find out at home that approximately 2/3 of the crabs were rotten bad. I opened every crab and most of them were terrible to the point of being inedible. I called The Shellfish company and after talking to 5 people, they insisted that the car ride is what must have made them go bad. Then how come 1/3 of the crabs were super fresh and alive?? Shouldn't they have all gone bad then?? In their styrofoam iced box in an AC'ed car?? The person I talked to, even after seeing pictures, insisted that everything was fresh catch of the day. He said they didn't look right, but that he could not do anything because the crabs are final sale. Shouldn't FRESH produce be final sale? The Shellfish Company sold rotten, inedible crabs to a customer that trusted their word for fresh seafood. I will not be returning.

Six of us came in around 6:30 for a college reunion weekend, wanting one proper local seafood meal out of the trip. We put our names down and grabbed drinks from the bar before choosing a space to sit outside. The restaurant is really big, with indoor seating, outdoor sea-facing tables, and a little market in the back. There's also a picnic table area with some giant lawn game going, which is where we enjoyed our drinks, making the wait genuinely pleasant instead of something to endure. For our first round, we tried the "crush," the local specialty, and ordered one of every flavor. Fresh squeezed juice, flavored vodka, triple sec, Sprite. Grapefruit and cherry limeade were the winners. The pineapple was awful. None of them were very strong, so after the novelty wore off I moved on to something more my speed (nothing beats a tequila soda). They also have a respectable beer selection. Our table ended up right by the water with a view of the boats, and our waitress was so helpful walking us through the menu, including the fact that lumpia is a local specialty here thanks to the area's Filipino population, which I did not know. We got oysters and three other appetizers, then split one entree between every two people since the portions are enormous. The fried shrimp was the unanimous favorite, and the spinach crab dip, lumpia, blackened crab cake (almost everyone ordered it), potato salad, and hushpuppies were all excellent. All of that, plus roughly two cocktails a person and tip, came to about $50 each, which felt like quite the steal for high quality seafood! Big attached parking lot, docks if you're coming in by boat, and the market sells shirts, hats, fresh crab meat, take-home versions of the appetizers, and fishing basics. There was a bit of a line/wait if you wanted to use the women's restroom (but isn't that the case everywhere?) I would definitely come back here next time I'm in town!!

The lobster roll is the star of the show--tender, juicy, buttery perfection piled into a soft roll like it knows exactly how important it is. I will say, the amount of lobster seems to have slimmed down a little over the years...maybe an ounce or so? And yes, I noticed. I have photographic evidence! I've been sending pictures of these glorious lobster rolls to my sister for years purely to rub this delicacy in her face, so I basically have my own unofficial lobster-roll archive. The crinkle-cut fries are another must, especially with a little Old Bay sprinkled on top. That tiny dusting takes them from "good fries" to "hand me another basket immediately." And don't sleep on the fried shrimp platter. The shrimp are plentiful, nicely seasoned, and consistently one of my favorites when I somehow manage to order something besides lobster. I've had the whoopie pies. I've had the Snap Dogs. They're perfectly fine, I'm sure. But this body was not built on "perfectly fine." This body was built on the REALLY good stuff. LOBSTER. Bite of Maine remains my lobster-roll champion. Everybody else is just out here participating. Inside is cool and quaint, lobster eclectic with a community vibe. Service is fast!

My girlfriend and her mom picked bubba's out of our list of about 20. We got there alittle early for dinner. That was a blessing because it got really busy right as we were finishing up. Our servicer was really friendly and helpful. Service speed was just slightly under average. I wish i took pictures of the food because it was all really good. Kids got the steamed clams ( twice) , clam chowder and ceaser salad. It must of been good because it was gone quickly. My girlfriends parents got oyster rockafeller and the fried shrimp dinner. The oyster rockafeller i was told was the best hes had. The shrimp dinner looked amazing and it was more than she could eat. My girlfriend got the stuffed halibut and frys... fish looked great and she said it was good. Frys were of the beer battered type. I ordered a half dozen of raw local clams... id say above average. She crab soup (first time trying it ... so i have no other to compare too), but i liked it . I also got the greek salad that i would have called average. The atmosphere and weather were beautiful. We started with the she crab soup and the half-pound of steamed shrimp, and both were outstanding. The she crab soup was rich and flavorful, and the shrimp were perfectly cooked and absolutely drool-worthy. My boyfriend ordered the grilled salmon, and after trying a bite, I have to admit I was a little jealous--it was phenomenal! I ordered the scallops with peppers, onions, and cucumbers. The scallops themselves were cooked perfectly, but the cucumber flavor just wasn't for me. That's purely a personal preference, not a reflection of the quality. My biggest disappointment was the coleslaw, which seemed more like lightly shredded lettuce with a drizzle of Marzetti's dressing than traditional coleslaw. Unfortunately, the service didn't match the food or the view. We waited quite a while before anyone acknowledged our table, and after our order was taken, we never saw our server again until the check arrived. There were no drink refills, no check-in to see how our meals were, and no thank you at the end. Overall, Bubba's has some incredible food and an unbeatable waterfront atmosphere, but the inconsistent service and a couple of underwhelming menu items kept it from being a great experience. It wasn't the best meal I've had, but it certainly wasn't the worst either. I'd definitely come back--for the appetizers, the salmon, and that beautiful view.
