As a huge Lord of the Rings fan, I had to make a stop here during my visit to Killarney. They were expecting a big party shortly after we arrived but graciously allowed us to sit at one of the reserved tables due to it being more accessible for my friend with limited mobility. They had our food out in a flash, and I found the steak in my sandwich to be super flavorful and tender. My friend wanted a meatless option so chose the Mediterranean Cheese sandwich filled with spinach, mozzarella, feta, and sun dried tomato on sourdough. She said everything tasted light and fresh. Nothing bad, nothing memorable about the food here. The food is almost what you can expect to get at an American gastropub. The Shire Burger is okay but I would have preferred them to melt through cheese on the burger. That would have made it better. The dessert is decent but it feels more like a custard than a true cheesecake. Not everything is going to be a home run. read more

As a huge LOTR fan, The Shire was such a let down. I had seen photos from years past where the theme was very strongly incorporated in design and menu items but it seems like the bare minimum was left when visiting now. They still had some touches back to the movie series and did have scenes playing at the bar, but overall it fell flat. A group of us stopped in for a quick drink. We ordered a "hobbit juice", long island, and blonde beer. Both drinks were far too acidic but service was rather prompt. We didn't try any food but probably wouldn't have wanted to based on the drinks. read more

If you're coming for the LOTR vibes - you may be slightly disappointed. I came with a few friends who had been here several years ago and apparently it is drastically different. After asking the bartender, apparently they were sued by Dreamworks and had to take much of the decorations down. What's left is still a cool, dingy hobbit hole-like pub - but with notable empty spaces on the wall and throughout the space. Service however was fantastic and quick! read more

There's a back area where a bigger group sat as well as a high top. They have themed drinks including a hobbits juice. The restaurant we wanted to go to in Killarney had a long wait, so we ended up here instead. I want very impressed with it. Their menu was mostly burgers. My husband and I got the Second Breakfasts Burger and the Steak Sandwich. The burger had three patties on it and the meat was cooked well done which made it very dry and flavorless. The amount of meat was overwhelming and took over the other flavors on the burger. The steak sandwich was just ok. We also tried the cheese, bacon, garlic mayo fries and the chicken, bacon, jalepeño fries. There former were pretty good, but the ladder were dry and not very good. My mom got the chicken sandwich and enjoyed it. We later learned that there is a new law in Ireland requiring all burgers to be cooked well done, so I can't fault them for the cooking of it, but unfortunately that made the burger not very good. Our service also wasn't the best. It didn't take too long to get our food, but it probably took us 20 minutes to get our waiter's attention to get the check. I've seen zero LOTR movies in their entirety, but this was by far my favorite bar for live music in Ireland, which essentially is the best bar in Ireland. My airbnb host was a local AND a musician, and recommended this bar for non-touristy local music, and it was incredible. The band that played on the Friday Leap Day Eve was one of the most amazing live music experiences of my life, particularly for the local culture experience it provided. Even though it was late February and "off-season" (meaning a nearly empty bar), they played with such inspiring passion and enthusiasm. They interacted with all of us, and we asked if they accepted donations, they said, "No, just clap." The bartender was also super cool. When I dissed the "local"Rockshore beer, he informed us that it was re-packaged Budweiser (because no one was buying it when it was labeled "Budweiser"). I loved every single bar I went to in Ireland (which spanned Dublin, Belfast, Galway, Cork, Limerick, and more), and The Shire was by far my favorite. It was a magical experience. read more

Friends stopped in here to dine, because we are massive LOTR fans; if you go for that alone, have a pint, then you are all set. They wanted to order food, I wasn't impressed with the menu, so I actually brought in food from nearby, and glad I did. Their burgers came out and the patties were so tiny compared to the bread ratio. They informed me the food was dry, needing lots of ketchup to cover up burnt dry burger meat taste. The fries are alacarte, which one friend ordered to share, but fries came out cold. The beer was priced high, because of the LOTR gimmick, and didn't top any local Irish brews on tap. It's got a very laid back feel and some cute decor around LOTR as per expectations - could've used more relevant decor but it's still fun. They did put an awning and outdoor dining in front of the circle door so it's not so obvious from the outside. Service was quick and attentive and food was actually quite good. I'm always on a lookout for hobbits - I practically run inside! The inside is lit with green lights and with thin green rugs on the floor this makes the place really fluorescent. I was the only patron who walked in around 11 in the morning on a Saturday. I had an Irish coffee and chatted with a waiter who was chatty and helpful, or at least I think he was since I just pretended that i knew what he was saying (yes, thick beautiful Irish accent). My heart desired more LTOR memorabilia and other nerds like me in a lively discussion helped by shire ale, this is probably reserved for later hours of weekend. Ergo: I must be back. read more

This cute little place was one of the hundred pubs that dotted the streets of Killarney. This one just happened to be right across the street from a salon where my mom was getting her hair done and it was the best respite to enjoy a Guinness. One of the best things I love about Ireland are the friendly people especially the staff at pubs. Sitting there by myself..... sucking down 2 pints of Guinness .....waiting for my mom, I had a delightful conversation. I wanted to like this place - I really did. Based on the over-the-top theme in front of the pub, I was expecting much more inside. What I found was a round doorway and a few themed knick-knacks on the walls. There were a few other random decorations that just didn't belong (fairy doors, randomly arranged tree ring cuts, etc.) It's rather dark and dreary inside which I would expect for some pubs, but not for one that is meant to make one recall the bright warmth of Middle Earth's Shire. Burger was okay, but there's not a lot of variety between the 7 or so burgers on the menu. Onion rings were too greasy. The husband and I tried a beer flight of the 3 themed beers and while they were served in cute little dimple steins, the beers were just average. Except for Frodo's Lager which smells like asparagus urine... tastes okay, but the smell was difficult to overcome. Take a picture outside, maybe pop in for a pint if you're curious, but don't plan to stay. It's not worth the time. read more

Oh the Shire in Killarney was a huge disappointment, to say the very least. We walked in and there was a few pictures and paintings in the wall that was reminiscent of The Shire in Lord of the Rings, but they serve no food when it's "off season" and the place actually had an odd smell in it, so I decided not even to stay and suffer through a beer. There was only one person sitting at the bar. The reason why I can give an extra star is because the bartender recommended we go to Murphy's (little did he know that we were going to go there after anyway from the research I had done) but we went there and that food was magnificent. This place is so cool! I'm a huge LOTR/Hobbit fan, so when I saw this place on Yelp, I had to check it out. The decor/design is awesome and hilarious, with tons of LOTR/Hobbit references on the walls, ceilings, even the names of the menu items! I got 2 of Bilbo's Beer, a really refreshing and smooth IPA, and a falafel burger with fries. Everything was delicious, and all of the employees were super nice, funny, and friendly. This is based on one experience at this place so take with a grain of salt as you can have a really good experience at a bad place or a really bad experience at a good place. I had a good experience in my one visit here. The staff was nice but maybe not the most attentive. They were busy for a weekday night and the music hasn't started yet. Wish we could have stayed longer but we are tired and had to drive home. Loved the theme aspect of the place but I could see how that would wear off after time. We had a flight of the LOTR beers. I came to "The Shire" with my girlfriend on the June bank holiday weekend and was absolutely disgusted with my experience there. We came in and took our seats, opened a tab and had a couple of drinks, were subjected to unbearably loud live music and when we decided to leave, our night took an even worse turn. I paid our tab, the money came out of my account, and I was then told by the manager, Ollie (easily the worst "manager" I've ever come across) that I was trying to steal my drinks and couldn't pay for them. I showed him that the money had come out of my bank account on my online banking, to which I was told "I don't give a f**k what your bank account says", and I was told "calm the f**k down" despite only talking in a raised voice to be heard over the crazily loud live music. I was told "can you not just f**king drop this, we're very busy as you can see" and he demanded I pay TWICE. I asked for assurance that I'd be refunded if I was double charged, an assurance which Ollie refused to give. He tried to insist to take a picture of my debit card, which I refused, and then made various threats towards me, and also turned his attention to my girlfriend, harassing her to pay (for a second time!). I was highly publicly embarrassed in front of the entire bar, made out that I couldn't/wouldn't pay my bar tab, a measly €52. He created an extremely animated scene, with his cursing, animated gestures, and accusations. The matter as a whole couldn't have been dealt with worse, and really felt like I was dealing with a "manager" who was way out of his depth, definitely much more suited to changing kegs or doing anything that isn't dealing with people! If I was visiting Killarney, I'd stay well clear of this bar, unless you want to be accused of theft/not able to pay your bill, after you've paid it! Probably won't be an option to you soon, a manager like "Ollie" will drive it out of business. If you're lucky! read more
