The store is relatively new to West Jefferson and opened within the last few years. It's family owned and operated, and the staff members who were working on the day of my visit could not have been lovelier. The only reason I'm not giving this place five stars is because I felt like the selection of merchandise in the general store was not as eclectic as most general stores I've visited. The majority of the merchandise either fell into what felt like a "live, laugh, love" version of a feminine / children's esthetic, or was downstairs in a section literally called "the man cave". With so many amazing local merchants and artists throughout the West Jefferson community, it would have been nice to see a few more options that fell between these two groups and were maybe a bit more neutral. While I very much enjoyed exploring the store and looking through everything, when it came time to actually purchase something for myself or to use as a gift, I really couldn't settle on anything that would be a good fit.

But this type of store is exactly what you want to see when you go to Boone...it's on that hippie dippy crunchy earthy patchouli juju crystals and charms and voodoo tip, and it is so much fun. They've got jewelry and books and charms and handmade things and instruments and tarot cards and art and clothing and I love it all. I was specifically looking for gifts to bring back home for my little girls and found the perfect things. There is a section by the cash register that had dozens of handmade necklaces, all with various crystals and coins from around the world. I found two of the sparkliest, Dark Crystalliest ones and decided to go with those. The fun part was, there was a sign next to these necklaces that told a little story about the family that makes them, and explains that they do not price anything, and will accept anything that the buyer decides is fair. That is super cool, and a great way to get karma flowing heavy. I make jewelry regularly, so I know the cost of supplies, and can fairly accurately gauge the amount of time put into pieces. I decided $20.00 was fair for what I chose. I also purchased a bar of lemongrass soap, handmade from a Boone local. This is some of the strongest smelling lemongrass soap I've ever smelled, and I've already showered with it and am kicking myself for not getting more. Once I made the purchases, the lady at the checkout seemed thrilled, rang me up, and before I left said, "Wait! You and your girls need the angels...here..." as she poured a handful of silver, glittering angel confetti into my hand. What a lovely human.

My family and I stopped into Take Heart last month during our first visit to Blowing Rock. My…read more6-year-old daughter had been looking for a heart-shaped locket after losing one from her grandparents. She finally found what she was looking for at Take Heart! She immediately went to the counter so we could purchase it. The women there were so kind with her, asking about her purchase and her name. They were so touched by her story that they decided to gift it to her for Christmas! We were shocked! We were in the store for a brief amount of time, but that visit will leave a long-lasting impression on her and us. Thank you to "the purple shop" for creating such a wonderful Christmas memory for our family!

The scents, the positive and uplifting music playing over the speakers, the friendly welcome from the staff, and all the beautiful items in the store, feel like home to me. The owner Sherri is the icing on the cake, her smile is pure comfort. She is always happy to help me pick out something special. Her Joy is contagious, and sincere. There are so many beautiful items in the store. Each time I go I find a little gift for a friend, a family member, and usually one for myself, and I leave with a smile on my face. This sweet little store is like a trip back in time, selling bottled sodas, canned goods, and local Boone and NC products like soaps, etc. My favorite find here was the local pies they had for sale, such as chicken pot pie, pecan, chocolate chess... I wish I took a picture! There were so many pie options, savory and sweet, of different sizes. I saw, too, that there was a food deal that I very much wanted to purchase (but didn't, since I was leaving town) that included something like a savory pie and cinnamon rolls and something else. It is set up like a typical antiques mall with items provided by different vendors, so you'll see some items priced higher than others based on who the vendor is, but I found the prices overall to be good. I stocked up on vintage glass decanters that were priced well below what I would normally see at similar stores in other cities, which was surprising given that resort town prices are often inflated. We met a vendor as we browsed, a friendly older gentlemen who asked about the items we were inspecting and told us where he sources most of his wares, and the lady who checked us out was also helpful and kind. Lots of records and toys, but you'll also find all the variety of items you expect in an antiques market. Finding the set of chicken decanters and the world's largest witch's broom were worth the trip even if I hadn't scored so many of the decanters I was searching for that day. We will definitely make this store part of our itinerary every time we return to Sugar Mountain.
