From the first season of the original Queer Eye (thanks to Thom Filicia) I learned that the biggest pieces of art you have in your home - are actually your windows. They need to be clean, well-dressed and whatever is beyond them should look neat. For Chun P and my first home together, I knew I wanted shutters. When we moved in, two rooms had sheer cellular shades that were very dirty with mystery stains, and one set of aging vinyl blinds that you couldn't raise/lower was left in a window in the living room. The rest of the windows had nothing. We're blessed with very large windows downstairs and I wanted shutters with outside mount frame, very large louvers (we're talking 4.5 inches folks) and invisible split tilt so we could still maximize the sunshine. For the initial consultation, Dave arrived at our home and was really friendly - we talked options and he measured our windows. Dave is really personable and we enjoyed our chat! We placed our order and paid the deposit the next day, May 15. Dave gave us a generous discount for ordering 8 or more shutters (we ordered them for every room!). Dave had warned us that due to shipping delays - it would be a long stretch till our shutters arrived. In the interim I had put up a pressure rod with a curtain in the living room, large pieces of cardboard for the back bedroom and some of those crappy paper curtains that always fall down. Half the time Chun P forgot about them - and we liked to joke our neighbors were treated to the 'Chun P show' nightly, as he'd forget to put up the temporary blinds and would often be practicing his dance moves shirtless in the living room. About a week ago our shutters arrived, and Wade reached out to schedule install. I was out of town on a business trip, so Chun P welcomed the install crew. He said they were friendly, kept the house spotless and the shutters were installed in no time. They were also extra careful when installing the shutters right next to our 60 gal fish tank with Puff watching their every move. When I arrived home for my trip I nearly swooned! They look gorgeous but also really help to cut down the sound outside and also keep the place much cooler. I wholeheartedly recommend Dave and his team. If you order, just be patient - shipping takes time! Good things come to those who wait! Both Dave and Wade are personable and helpful, providing me with good recommendations on window coverings. I like how they don't try to sell me the most expensive products but show what's available and what would look best in my home. Most recently, I showed Wade 3 old blinds and shades in various rooms. One was definitely broken, so I bought new blinds from The Shutter Guys. The other 2 shades Wade suggested just keeping as is because it would add quite a bit to the cost. Most companies try to convince customers to change as many window coverings as possible, so it was a pleasant surprise to hear Wade say to wait until the 2 shades broke. The installers also do a great job! They take away the old blinds/shades, and everyone from The Shutters Guys wears shoe covers in the house. One time when a shade under warranty broke, the company gave me options: have someone come to uninstall it, OR drop it off at their storage unit in Escondido for free. Since I was already going to Escondido that weekend, I opted for the latter. I was supposed to pay for having the item shipped back to me after the repair, but the company sent me the fixed shade free of charge! (Note: The reason it broke was not The Shutter Guys' fault.) First of all I am impressed with the customer service of the owner, Dave.He came personally and gave me a quote upfront. Even without making the decision of getting this company for their service- he already offered to provide a temporary cover/paper blinds on our windows. Right then and there, I already know that he is an exceptional employer. The quote that was given to me was not the cheapest out of the many quotes that I received but I decided to go with them because Dave took time to explain and compared the different options for my window treatment and extra tips. He was also honest that it will take 3 months or after the holiday before they can install (contract signed end of September). So expect for the long wait because all of the shutters are customized based on the size and number of windows/doors (project). Fast forward installation day, Edgar and Michael are both young, well-trained, and very professional. Both very respectful. We originally found the Shutter Guys via Yelp when looking for a quote for motorized smart blinds over some of our windows that had a direct line of sight into the main bedroom of our house. Dave unsold us on that idea though, convincing us that they're kind of a hassle since the motors can die and you have to either deal with changing the batteries or hire an electrician to wire them up for you, and realistically you don't need all that tech for something you won't touch as often as you think you will (and personally I've seen enough smart home companies go under and leave you without a way of making use of the functionality anymore that I agree it's a bit risky, especially with something so expensive). In fact, he told us if we wanted motorized blinds we should seek out another company because he didn't want his to be associated with something not done well. Some people might find that off-putting, but personally I respect the heck out of having that kind of pride in your company. After receiving estimates and mulling it over a bit, my wife and I decided to move forward with the shutters and after two months of waiting (it is custom made furniture after all) we're very happy with the results! It might sound cheesy, but they add a bit of class to the house, and as Dave predicted we definitely want to replace more of the blinds in our house with shutters over time. Also, the installation crew (whose names I forgot -- sorry, I'm terrible with names!) were communicative and friendly. Hopefully they'll be the ones to install our next set of shutters since one of our cats liked them so much! read more
