Going forward, I'll be visiting The Sketchy Artist every time I'm in Northfield. This shop is filled with not only stationary, but adorable gifts, tasty snacks, high quality incense, and much more. I met the owner, who's a lovely person, and we chatted about stationary and what more visitors ought to look at (the incense!). The prices are reasonable for the quality you're getting. Wow, downtown Northfield really managed to impress, and with much thanks due to the Sketchy Artist! This very well conceptualized store features art supplies in the back and artist inspiration in the front, including cards, prints, children's books and art projects, Asian inspirations, puzzles, games, pens, etc. The staff is super friendly and the ambiance unbeatable - and good music, too! This is one of the many places along Division Street S to go when looking for the inner artist in you or a perfect gift for that special someone. Very cute half artist supplies / half gift store as advertised. I bought a cool pen from Germany, a brand I'd never heard of before.

My daughter and I enjoy this store so much. Being she is such a blossoming artist, she enjoys purchasing one pencil at a time, or one sheet of paper at a time. Of course all the trinkets on the counter catch her eye causing me to spend more than her allowance would provide her, but I see it as supporting a spectacular store owner as well. I remembered this store from several years ago when I was a student. It's still just as hard to NOT buy their stuff! Their sheets of paper are soooo beautiful, and there's also a lot of cool stuff from Japan (like paper balloons and cutesy bowls). They have items that you really don't see anywhere else. Sketchy Artist is an asset to downtown Northfield. A lot of beautiful merchandise is packed into a small space. It's great! While Sketchy Artist is one of my go-to local shops when I want to buy a gift, it isn't what you'd call a serious art supply store -- more of a gift/toy/stationery place. The owner does stock a few brands of artist paint and a small array of brushes and canvases, and a variety of other art supplies, but the choices are extremely limited, probably due to space constrictions. But, she is willing to order anything I request, which is awesome -- but for serious art supply shopping, or when you want to compare products or don't know precisely what you need, it doesn't really work. I'm a professional artist and I go up to the Twin Cities for my art supplies. But, this is a wonderful place to shop for fun kids' toys and games (lots of imported toys), writing supplies, and great gifts. Tons of cute Japanese imports if you're interested in that. read more

Lovely independent shop in beautiful Northfield, stocked with art papers, painting and drawing supplies, and lots of pens. (It isn't a fully-stocked art supply store by any means, but they will order anything you need beyond the basics.) The owner also specializes in a variety of neat imported stickers, toys, and gifts from Japan including Totoro items. A great place to shop for kids' birthdays. read more

I haven't been back but the owner did reply to my horrible review. The owner indicated that the man who was there that day was in fact completing his last day of employment at that establishment and had up until my complaint been what was though of as a good employee. I'm not from the area and was in town visiting family. We decided to do a little shopping in the cute little downtown shopping section of Northfield. This store had a lot of potential and carried some really cool merchandise however, the staff was so rude, it made the entire experience unpleasant, especially compared to the genuine friendliness I encountered at every other store we entered. I'm new to town and went checking out all the shops downtown. Sketchy Artist is my favorite! It's great for any type of artist and is an EXCELLENT place to buy gifts for all ages! The customer service I received was A+ even with three kids in tow I was treated as a valuable customer. The prices were great as well. Great place to browse, as well as get art supplies for all levels of talent/ interest. For the space they have available, they pack a TON of variety into every nook and cranny, with lots of opportunities to test the products. The staff is great too- not just friendly, but knowledgeable as well. I always make a point to stop in when I'm in Northfield! read more
