Wowee zowee, I haven't been in a fine art store this extensive and specialized since I was literally in college taking fine art courses and had to buy supplies from the campus store. I came here because I needed a replacement Micron 005 pen, which is a favorite among artists. I'd checked online and saw they carried them (as did Michael's, but I'm looking to vote with my dollars and spend more appropriately), but elsewise wasn't sure what to expect on my visit. I was pleasantly surprised and I am certain I will be back in the future for projects I have planned. There's stuff here that you just won't find at any big box craft store. That said, this store caters primarily to painters and drawers. This isn't a store to get kid's art supplies; it's a place for adult artists to shop. Canvases (reasonably priced) in a multitude of dimensions (some taller than I am), a staggering assortment of oil paints, paint pens, acrylic leather paint (designed to flex), a massive number of Copics, pastels/charcoal/conte crayon, Sculpey, watercolor supplies including Arches large format single sheets, huge selection of high quality spray paints, canvas sold by the yard on rollers, resin making supplies (including face masks/goggles), gloss glazes for your ceramic firing projects, mechanical pencil leads in every gauge and hardness you could desire, journals/sketchbooks, storage and easels, impulse items like stickers/greeting cards/candy towards the registers, a massive custom framing counter and a canvas stretching counter as well. The employees were all friendly and eager to help. I got asked while I was browsing if I needed any help finding anything. (I did actually need help finding the Microns but my goofy butt auto responded I was just having fun looking... which I was, but LOL I could've also used the help. I'm just so used to turning down assistance.) There's bathrooms in the back if you have need. They are gender neutral, hooray! Nothing fancy, but all functional and clean enough. The surface parking lot is a bit small (and many of the spaces are 30 minute maximum), but there's also plenty of garages nearby as well. The store has plenty for artists from every walk of life but there is one big issue. This review is written from the perspective of an older disabled adult. Little thought was given to the consequences of crowding the aisles with product displays making the store difficult for someone with mobility challenges. I dropped a few brushes (which I did buy) and because it is difficult for me to bend that far I cried out for help several times using my announcer voice. Everyone in the store would have to hear this unless they were wearing headphones. No one responded. After waiting a bit I struggled to get the items off the ground. Finally someone came but it was too late. She stood directly in front of me preventing me from reaching the register. People in general have no awareness of disability. The employee who rang me up obviously didn't know how to have a short friendly chat. It made me feel unwelcome, as if I were disturbing her somehow. I have a long retail history and can't imagine why someone would treat a customer that way. It's unfriendly. She was capable of the simplest basics of operating a register. Unkind. Luckily I don't need to visit often. read more

Every time I have gone to this blick, the staff have been so amazing in helping me navigate the store and get everything on my list, while providing different pricing options AND thoughts on each of the products within certain ranges. Dick Blick has long term staff (low turnover) that are artists themselves & treat their visitors, clients, shoppers with care & make sure we are taken care of. It's not as easy as it looks to get glass cut to fit thin frames & so the third time was the charm, on the spot (luckiky there was no line or heavy traffic at this 3:00 pm Monday moment). I did a custom framing order at Blick and everything went smoothly and was easy from the first appointment to the finished work. They did a great job with the framing and when I picked it up it was wrapped in plastic to protect it from the weather with corner protection as well. It also had a wire on the back and they included the mounting hardware so no additional work is needed from my end to get it ready to display! read more

Their advertisements always sound better than they are. 85% off- then literally nothing in the store is off that. After shopping for an hour- I get to the cashier- and they only allow credit card or PIN- they don't allow you to use the debit card as a credit transaction. So that just made me spend my time being withered away for no reason. The only way to have VISA's protections is to use it as a debit transaction. This is also the only way to get interchange income for your company. Using the PIN should not be required. With how many card systems are broken into- there is no reason this company should not allow you to use it. Ill be canceling my "membership" with them. Over Blick... this really sucked as it waisted my time there. read more

I went in to just look around for a few small things. Selection wise for the majority of supplies was great. The workers were nice if you initiated a conversation with them but they typically didn't seem to ask if they could help anyone. The price tags on the shelf are not clear. I misread the label and spent more on pastels than would've liked too. This place is superior to a Michaels in quality and selection of goods. Only wish I had one near where I live. read more

I normally only review food, but my experience at Block today compelled me to call out Blick retail. I had a pleasant experience buying my wife's birthday gift, but it was the wrong brand. Just drive the hour to return the unopened paint, but I had not brought the receipt. Kaitlyn, the cashier made her best effort, pulling my receipt from the electronic journal using my wife's loyalty card. But my debit card number was not in the receipt print out, so she could not give me my money back. She was empathetic, so she called customer service. The response she received, and you won't believe this, was that the one person that can verify my card number was not available. This means I can't return my product despite a copy of the receipt. My message to Blick would be that loyalty card members in 2018 should be bale to return products, especially when you have a copy if the receipt! The good news is that I have my receipts for two other purchases, so those can be returned. Ultimately, this is a fun place to buy art supplies. But when Amazon and every other retailer on the face of the Earth can help you after the transaction better, you are shopping at Block at your own risk. read more

I absolutely love Blick Art their customer service is hands down some of the best I've ever dealt with, and the fact that the employees are artists themselves so that they know the products their suggesting is a huge plus. Not to mention their custom framing is one of the best deals around and they accept competitors coupons, so far I have saved over $1000 in framing. The prices on their supplies can be a little high but, compared to other art stores in the area especially uptown which is only 15 minutes away, you would spend twice to three times at much. read more

I brought in the list of supplies needed for the oil painting class that I had signed my daughter in law and myself up to take. We said that we are not experienced and needed help getting the supplies. Our Cashier and Sales person was Casey, who we were told is very good with oil painting. I spent $294 including 6 slippery primed wood panels. Our oil painting instructor told us the improper boards/ canvases were making our first time very difficult since the oil paint would slide right down the board/ canvas. It was like painting with alcohol. I feel like the salesperson sabotaged us so we would have a bad experience. Looking at the receipt, I see there was no bar code included - the machine cut off the receipt without including that bottom portion with the barcode - probably because the receipt was so long -I spent so much ! Probably a scam to make it difficult to return things when you spend a lot of money and then have a problem. Fortunately, I was able to return the 4 unused boards. Very frustrated this is how a new customer is treated. I have heard so many good things abut Blick's. I won't be repeating any of those stories. I have my own story to tell! I feel I should have been reimbursed for the boards we used because it was not what we needed to use at all and the salesperson picked out improper supplies for us. We only used them by default since we go to the first class with nothing but inadequate canvases to start. Warning don't be seduced by the retro candy. It's not your mother's fruit stripe gum. No flavor and a total rip off, even the stripes aren't the same. I have a budding artist who chooses Blicks over any other store. I thought that I was always getting ripped off because they don't have the 40% off coupon Michaels coupon but when I actually looked at the prices, they are fair prices, not inflated prices to be used with the coupon Michael's and Joann's. They have everything she needs from pencils and paper pens and I can sit down at a drafting table and wait for her to bring me items that she desperately needs. We have the Blicks card which the manager told me was actually a Web price match card, so this time the card took three dollars off because the web price for whatever we bought was cheaper than the in-store price. Now I'm trying to convince her to sell her art online to pay for her own supplies! read more

Locals will know by now that the Twin Cities are widely recognized as being something of a magnet for a variety of art and artists, and Blick Art Materials has been a local fixture for many years. It started as Artsign back in the 80s and 90s, was then sold and became Dick Blick, and more recently, Blick. The store is bright and spacious, with big floor-to-ceiling windows providing lots of natural light. Their wares are well organized, and it's very easy to find what you're looking for. The prices are average for art supplies. Sure, you may save a little change by going to Michael's, but Blick is dedicated to art and artists. You won't find plastic models or silk flowers there, but if you're an art student or professional artist, or even a hobbyist, this is definitely the place to go. One advantage is that Blick offers their own generic brand of some items. For example, I use a lot of colour-graded markers (where a set of, say, 12 markers will vary in range from very light to very dark), and for many years my only option was to buy Prismacolor brand, which can run $25 for a 12-marker set. Blick offers the same markers with their own packaging for $18. It's not a huge difference, but with the savings I could get a nice India ink pen as well. I really like the staff here. They are all practicing artists that use the products they sell, so their opinions can be trusted as an educated opinion and not some spin put on by the manufacturer or by the store. My youngest daughter and I are both illustrators, so we like the pen aisle, where you can try out the markers and pens on scraps of cardboard. My wife and my other daughter are both mixed-media artists, and Blick doesn't disappoint in that regard. My only regret is that I don't have more money to spend here. read more

This store has amazing selection of supplies. We took our artwork in to get it framed awesome experience. Then we went to the store. Well the cashier was just awful. We walked up and the cashier total us we had to go twelve or so feet stand in the wait area and he'd call us over. There was no one there waiting so it was an exercise in what???? So my husband took everything walked twelve feet to a sign that said wait and he then said we could come back to him. Outrageous. Who does that. This cashier literally made us walk to only tell us to now we could come back. We were shopping not playing Simon says. We asked for a mgr. her response was less than satisfactory. Really horrid experience. I guess if you have time to play silly bugger games go here. Sad it use to be an awesome place to go and shop. read more

This place feels great. The back has a framing service. The design of the store is modern yet artsy. Their materials and supplies are just enough without using too much square footage. The prices are pretty reasonable. And they have a great 30% off coupon (online) that you can print out and bring into the store. And if you sign up for their membership card (not CC, just loyalty card) gives you 10% off every purchase from then on out. The service here is nice. They don't bother you unless you need something. It is a bit on the smaller side but it has basically everything you could need. Plenty of choice when it comes to canvases and brushes. read more

Blick carries a wide range of higher-end art supplies, sketchbooks, frames, and craft paraphernalia. (I absolutely love their open-stock pen selection!) Their artsy-crafty selection seems out of place, as if they're not sure if they would rather be a high-end art supply store or cater to DIY crafters a la Michael's. Seemingly to dissuade people from purchasing craft supplies there, Blick does not have the best value for items like pipe cleaners or Crayola markers - would be better to go to Target or Walmart for those. Nonetheless, Blick's pricing for high-end supplies (Prismacolor, Faber-Castell, Rotring, etc.) is very competitive. I very much appreciate Blick's large parking lot and central location. Well-kept merchandise and new facility makes Blick a comforting place to shop. Bonus for teachers/students: free Blick membership for a year! I love art supplies, so my student's budget loves the free 10% discount. read more

I have been doing business with Dick Blick since I was 13 with their Roseville store....later by catalog when I lived in Brainerd, and now with the shop in Edina. I only get my art supplies through Blick. I am also an art teacher as well as a studio artist. I send my students to Blick and most of them follow through with it. I am now 69 years old coming up soon in March. Recently I was given a very difficult restoration of a 200 year old painting....went on line to see who had the better varnish remover and again decided on Blick. It is on order headed my way. Today Dick Blick lost a customer after many years - me. After putting together a shopping list of paints I needed by using their website I was amazed to see that the in-store prices were around 30% higher. After driving across town to purchase them I felt cheated. The clerk was completely unsympathetic and just glared at me when he pushed my bag of paints at me after I checked out. Biggest quality selection of art supplies I have ever come across.

I've been to this BLICK store a few times. They do have a very good amount of inventory selection, however, I seem to get an unwelcome feeling, 'watched' and actually followed around. Last visit a middle aged man swooped through my isle so many times, I was going to ask him if he was an employee, or just 'following me'. (guess he was an employee, as he carried nothing, wallet, etc.) The check out staff, also, seems impersonal and rushed. Really ? I am quite a shopper and have never experienced such ~ I am also a long time student at a very reputable Art School, and have NO history of anything at all, and did spend $100 ~ just saying, I will only go there if I can't buy my supplies online or at a different place. As business owner's ourselves, Customer service is so important, and I sure don't get it here.... So, 2 STARS is stretching it. read more

Went shopping at the new Blick store today and I have to say I was impressed. I didn't expect a Blick store to look as impressive as it did: the store is huge and well lit, has expanded lines of just about every art supply you could think of, and the clerks were happy to help me. If you run into a clerk with pink hair she was amazingly helpful. The store didn't have silk screen by the roll but had everything else I would need. The area of the cities was in need of a store like this. I'm happy to see that Blick has reinveted itself and I just had to comment. read more

May want to choose your visit time carefully, when I was there today (9/15/14) there was a heavy set, short haired, bearded employee that was obviously a maniac...kicked a basket across the store, practically throwing other stuff around. While I love Blicks products and buy many art supplies for my artwork, I would not recommend having any artwork printed here. I brought in an original piece of artwork, paid and left it with the graphic designer to be scanned and printed. When I got it back 2 weeks later someone or something altered the original piece which in turn made the prints look terrible. Someone painted white paint over the eye of the buffalo I had painted and altered the nose too. When I confronted the store manager and graphic designer about it, they assured me that nothing like this has ever happened before and that no one is allowed to alter work. Something clearly happened to it in their care. If I would not have had a photograph of the piece before I left it with them I'm not sure they would have believed me. They offered a full refund and free printing. I took the refund and said no thanks to the free printing. My biggest problem is that I was not contacted about the drastic changes and that someone took it upon themselves to alter my original work. That is disrespectful and unprofessional. I also contacted the corporate office and have not heard anything. read more
