The Slug and Lettuce in Albert Square is a branch of the pub chain located in Manchester city centre, as I recall from memory it is one of three alongside branches in Spinningfields, and one also on Deansgate.
This branch is located in a great central location, also really close to the Town Hall in Albert Square, it is more of a pub, hence the high presence of gin bottles everywhere and the offer where you can get 241 on Gin and Tonic's on Thursday's.
I came in here while looking for something to eat, I was told the gluten free menu was on a tablet, and the selection overall was quite small. One thing I didn't like was that the menu was confusing, for example, the tablet mentioned I could have chips and garlic mayo, only to find out when it was served that I couldn't have the Garlic Mayo. The same applied for the spicy ketchup with the omelette bites, however, the server made up for this by bringing me a squeezy bottle of both Heinz Ketchup and the new Heinz premium "Seriously Good" Mayo.
The service was a little slow for food, but the presentation of the food was quite impressive considering this is more of a pub chain than a restaurant, the waitress spoke very softly and she seemed a little unenergetic and uninspiring but she did have a decent knowledge of coeliac disease and gluten-free, as she went on to tell me that the chef's son who was working on my visit, suffers from Coeliac disease.
Due to the limited selection for gluten free, I ordered three small plates for £12 and a portion of chips for £2.50, the chips came in a huge portion and were satisfactory quality.
For my main, I ordered the three small plates for £12 in the offer, I ordered two portions of the BBQ chicken and one set of omelette soldiers, the omelette soldiers were strange, innovative yet decent quality, putting an omelette in a rather rare, cool concept, however the chicken was just okay, and perhaps it was a little bit too sticky due to putting too much sauce on them.
The menu selection for drinks other than alcohol was quite poor, for example, they had Bailey's Iced Coffee, despite being at a high price compared to the prices of the cans in Tesco for example, but no iced tea.
This place is decent, my food was satisfactory, in some parts above average and in some parts below average, the service also met that description and was good in parts and frankly terrible and confusing and even frustrating in others, yet mainly down to the fact they were careful with my allergy to try and not make me ill, the fact the food was satisfactory and they did try to replace things (such as the mayo and ketchup) with similar varieties, I feel this place deserves a slightly generous three-star rating. read more
