My partner and I shared a half scoop of chips (with a ketchup packet for $0.50 extra) and two gurnard fillets. We spent around ~$23. At the time that we ordered, there were 4 different fish that you could choose from. The service was quick and there is a clock behind the order counter that tells you how long your estimated wait time will be (ours was about 30 minutes on a Sunday evening). The fish and chips does not come with any dipping sauces or lemon, but there is extra salt and bottles of malt vinegar on the tables. The chips were well salted and thoroughly cooked and the fish was perfectly breaded and fried (not to soggy or crispy). Everything was very tasty! Local fish & chips place that everyone loves in Mapua! We usually get whatever they have on daily special (depends on the season.) One scoop of chips is $4.90. I've seen other places offer soggy & cold $3/scoop chips but chips from The Smokehouse is definitely worth paying $5! You can take it to go and have it at the wine bar or the brewery at Mapua Wharf. Perfect for a sunny day lunch/dinner. If you're there on a busy day, be aware of the line up and wait time. I've seen people waiting for their food for 40 mins. If you are looking for a substantial meal that isn't going to break the bank then give The Smokehouse a try. Smokehouse has a variety of local seafood with a varying menu depending on the season. You can either enjoy your meal on the tables just outside the restaurant (OK, it's more like a fancy shack) or you can take it into nearby watering holes to enjoy with your favorite beverage. Most people seemed to wander back to a wine bar across the street but my wife and I took ours over to Golden Bear Brewing Company since the fish goes so well with the beer. In all honesty, I don't know if Golden Bear is keen on bringing in food since they serve their own, but we ate outside and nobody said a thing. Our only negative was the wait was a bit long (perhaps 15 minutes) as there was only one person manning the register, phone and fryers. Seems the locals are big on takeaway. If you are jonesing for some great Fish and Chips, you can't do much better than The SmokeHouse. read more

Disappointing. Not real paua fritter, not real mussel fritters. Very small piece of fish in greasy batter. A decent portion of ho-hum chips.

Pretty decent fish and chips. Not as good as the one in Mot, but still. Takes a while for the order to be ready though :(
