Literally the day before we were scheduled to return the keys, the ceiling above our toilet completed descended onto our bathroom floor, there was no prior water damage, nothing, the ceiling just came apart. We reported to bldg. management and they confirm it's a no fault accident. (Could've been so much worse.) Review for The Social (Apartment Complex): I've lived here for quite some time and want to leave an honest review. There are some upsides -- the units are fairly spacious and the amenities are decent. But the ongoing issues with maintenance, communication, and basic livability have been deeply frustrating. The most serious and recent problem is my front door lock, which completely stopped working after a battery replacement in April. Maintenance installed a manual lock as a temporary solution, but my door became unstable. In May, they added a metal plate -- now it often gets jammed shut, and sometimes I can't open it at all. It has taken me over 20 minutes just to get out of my apartment. I've submitted multiple work orders and was told the replacement of the electronic lock would be expedited. It's been three months and nothing has changed. Tonight, I called the after-hours maintenance line because the door was stuck again. The call operator was helpful and tried to contact emergency maintenance, but no one picked up. He could only leave voicemails. I'm hoping someone will follow up, but this whole situation is exhausting and unreliable. (*UPDATE* The maintenance crew came the next day and told me the company doesn't produce the electronic lock anymore but no one had told me this information for the past three month. The last update I got in June was they would expedite getting a new electronic lock. I feel I have been lied to this whole time.) This is just one of many issues: * No night/weekend security. One day, the management ended their contract with the third-party security company -- without notifying residents. * Laundry system was replaced with no warning. Our old cards stopped working overnight, and the refund process is still unresolved for me after 6+ months. * Frequent hot water and HVAC outages. In the winter, I went weeks without heat or hot water. * Ongoing pest problems -- roaches, mice, fruit flies. Even keeping your unit spotless doesn't guarantee they won't appear. We have extreme heat warnings and we are living in these conditions. This is inhumane and totally unacceptable. On top of that the apartments are run down and nasty. The bathrooms have mold in them. Horrific management that does not care about the residents at all paired with cockroaches, unstable hot water, unstable wifi, missing furniture, and broken doors. However, worst of all is the fact that there were 2 fires in the building today and management did not set off any fire alarms/lights to alert the residents-rather, they had a quiet announcement on loop telling us to go downstairs (but the catch is that this announcement gets falsely set off multiple times a week and now is not taken seriously. The social is the worst apartment building I've ever lived in. The amenities are horrible, right now only one elevator works for hundreds of people. The washer and dyer is outrageously expensive and does not dry your clothes for at least 3 cycles, which is nearly $6. The hot water is always being turned off and sometimes even the electricity. I am paying for a Parking spot in the garage and the garage door has been open the entire winter, which could allow anyone or anything into the property and my property, my car. To top it off, we have mice in our apartment that we keep neat and tidy. Do not live here. read more

For parents who are considering helping their children rent apartments in the Social: the information under the for parents button on the website is deceptive. The website says the following: "The Social North Charles does have an on-site courtesy patrol that provides services for our residents 24/7. Additionally, our community is a controlled access facility. All residents are given a FOB for entering the building. Guests must be accompanied by a resident or check in with our patrol team upon entry. We encourage all of our residents to report any suspicious activity to our courtesy patrol and as always, dial 911 for emergencies." There is not a 24/7 courtesy patrol. Nor is the building a controlled access facility. Residents do have FOBs, but almost all of the doors are open during the day and no fob is needed to enter. There is no one in the office who checks in with visitors (which would be impossible to identify anyway as the doors are already open/unlocked). read more

Leased at the Social for a year as a college student. The reviews are all accurate and I experienced pretty much everything besides roaches and mice thankfully. Me and my roommate went to tour the building prior, and were seen a nice staged apartment. We expected a similar apartment from our tour but once we moved in, our room strangely had carpet and was definitely in worse shape than we expected (mold in bathroom, rust, peeling counters and stains). We also found the previous tenets utensils in the kitchen, which was very weird as we felt that means they definitely didn't deep clean anything. Throughout the year we had cold water at least several days each month and they would also often shut the water for repairs with little or no warning. My friends apartment went months without hot water with no compensation. The elevators were constantly broken, leaving one for the entire building. The basement always had an awful smell of garbage. The garbage chute was also broken for over half the year meaning we walked our garbage down to the outside dumpsters. The garage door was broken pretty much the entirety of my lease. Fire alarms constantly going off. The pool was never open when they said it would be, and if it was it was filled with bugs and dirty. Luckily we had no issues with our heat and air. Maintenance did the best with the amount of floors they had to deal with, especially Lucky who was always helpful. Management was extremely difficult to deal with, and upon our lease ending we were never given our deposit back despite passing the room inspection and attempting to communicate with management. To this day they have me and my roommates $1200 deposit, it just became too much of a hassle to deal with since they rarely replied or had any solution. Overall not ideal housing, I would suggest looking at other options in the area. read more

The higher management has been absolutely horrendous about fixing my problems over the past two years and I am happy to finally be free of my lease. Over the past 2 years: - I have had SERIOUS rat problems that were BARELY addressed -Cockroaches coming out of my sink and drains - I had my heat shut off in January for 2 weeks without a rent reduction or way to stay warm - My apartment was broken into by MANGAMNET without my consent and LEFT open for nearly 2 weeks while I was on holiday. My neighbors reported it to security and the management did nothing!!! - Car garage flooded MULTIPLE times The water is always out, the hot water never works, and the higher management staff at the building does not give a shit about you and they do not know what the hell is going on in this disgusting trashy building. Here's the good and the bad: Good: Probably one of the "better" places to live within the area. That being said, there are nicer quality and cheaper places right down the street, i.e. Ardmore Arms. Bad: 1. Mice- No matter how clean your rooms are, there will be mice and maintenance doesn't know how to solve it. The first time I called to ask about it being taken care of, I was told to be more clean. 2. Maintenance- With my second request of the mice being heard, maintenance set up traps. However, when maintenance came to randomly check these traps, I was in the shower. Like another reviewer has previously mentioned, maintenance has access to your room and will come in without your consent. While I was in the shower, I had put a lock on my door which was subsequently broken by maintenance trying to get in. Unacceptable. 3. Packages- If there are too many packages for Parcel pending, they are thrown in the mailroom. I've now had two packages "mysteriously" disappear since living here for over a year. Recently, I've tried contacting the office for clarification to which I was met with a generic email about Food Delivery and Parcel Pending information. I was not met with any kind of specific response or concern for my package which the shipping showed had been delivered this past Saturday. If you're considering The Social North Charles, start with the less than 5 star reviews, because most of those are made by students trying to win points for the company's reward program. read more

Agree with the other posters about the alarm issues. The management here is useless. The only upside I've noticed recently is the maintenance staff is noticeably better. The new guys are very responsive and on it. Have seen them there frequently on off hours and weekends. Hopefully this is a good sign of better changes to come. read more

I signed my lease in November, and was told that my deposit of $1200 was a security deposit. When I went to move in August, they would not let me move in until August 23rd. Come to find out my "security deposit" all the way back in November was actually payment of rent for the entire month of August, and it cost more than my actual rent did, even though I was not allowed to move into the apartment until the last week of August. I lost $1200 for a month of rent I was not allowed to use, and was none the wiser simply because they made me sign the contract 10 months in advance. When I brought this up with them recently, they fought me on it and could not explain to me what I actually paid $1200 for. The pool was not open at all the entire year I lived there. My roommate and I were constantly getting into fights with the onsite management about fees, the elevators not working, the pool not being open, people parking in our parking spots, etc. They did not want to help. A lot of the reviews on here are praising management, but none of the people they are praising work at the complex anymore. Management gave my roommate the same parking spot that a woman who had been living at the complex for 3 years had. Management would not look into the problem no matter how often my roommate complained that someone was parking in her parking spot. My roommate had to track down the woman who was parking in her parking spot to figure out the problem, and then had to relay this mistake to management. management then moved her to a new "parking spot" at the very bottom of the building. They told her that the spot she was moved to was a spot that they don't normally use for residents because it was so small and they stored equipment in it. They did not move any of the equipment out of the spot before forcing my roommate to pay an extra $150 a month to park in the spot. When she complained, they said they had no other spots for her to park, even though the entire surface parking lot was empty the entire time I lived there, and told her that they were sorry for their mistake but that she should been thankful they could give her a parking spot at all, even though she signed a contract for one 10 months in advanced and this should have been solved then. She was not allowed to back out of the contract, even though they changed the terms. Maintenance would let themselves into our rooms, sometimes without asking, yet wouldn't come for weeks when you needed them to. Yes the apartments are pretty, but the infestation the place has of roaches and mice is absurd for the price you are paying. I paid a house mortgage for this place, and not only were half the amenities unusable, but also I had to constantly worry about using the bathroom due to the roaches that lived in the drains. There are better, cheaper, and nicer places no more than 5 steps away from this building, and the staff will do anything to sell an apartment to you; the amount of lies I am catching just now after moving out is ridiculous. Roxy and Lisa, the property managers, are great and easy to work with, and the security guards are also great too! The facilities here are lovely. Maintenance and cleaning staff are wonderful. The leasing office is too. I wish I'd known about the road noise. Student noise is at occasionally an issue. Abrupt decisions that remove promised free printing and visitor parking is alarming given how much we pay (unfortunately the printing budget may have maxed out but there should have been better management regarding it). This building is very friendly to student living and needs otherwise. It has beautiful accommodations and is in a wonderful area. Elevators could be improved so that they don't need to be repaired monthly. read more

Overall, I like the building. The security staff is awesome (especially Pam) who makes all of the residents feel at home and goes above and beyond for all of us. I had a few issues with the move-in process, but Roxy always answered my questions and helped me through any problems I had. Additionally, Miranda is always friendly and has helped me when guests were visiting on a Saturday. Other members of the office are not as friendly, specifically Lisa who asked me to come back when she wasn't working after I asked a question. Despite this, the majority of the staff is friendly. I would say the building is expensive compared to other housing options in Baltimore. Additionally, the parking situation is a little hectic and outrageously expensive. It is a solid apartment building for students that attend JHU or other universities in the area. They have a great cleaning staff who comes every morning and the maintenance team fixes any issues in a timely manner. read more

This post is for students and faculty at Johns Hopkins and Loyola considering living at The Social. We're academics and have lived around the country. Take our friendly advice - don't live here. All of the neighboring apartments are more affordable, have professional-class tenants, and are equally as nice. We lived at The Social for one year. It was a catastrophe. The current on-site management is improved. But the management company is the worst we've ever dealt with. I'll post a few anecdotes: Between the time we originally rented and moved in the ownership changed from Bozzuto to Trinity, without notification. We figured, no problem, we had a lease. By our third month Trinity began to charge us hundreds of dollars in unexplained fees, without explanation. It took months to fix. The response of the on-site management at the time: "it's my building and I can do what I want." Someone tried to break into our apartment when my partner was there, claiming he was maintenance. He wasn't. When we contacted the manager, she refused to tell us if maintenance was at our apartment, telling us it was none of our business. She removed all of the security cameras in the building. And when we asked the remote call center to send security - because someone was trying to break in - they told my partner that she wasn't allowed to talk to on-site security and that she was on her own. In spite of the mystery charges and security problems we decided to stay one more year due to proximity to Hopkins. We agreed on a rate with on-site management. One week before our lease was up they tried to raise our rent four different times until it was a 25% increase from the previous year. We were fine with a 3-4% raise. The new on-site manager Roxana, who's very nice, tried to fix it. The building was one-third empty with few prospects. We weren't going to pay an extra $500 per month, so we moved. Believe it or not, there's more. But I think you've heard enough. read more

Had a great experience here - apartment was spacious, location is on point, amenities were great and so were the people. Leasing office was super helpful. Lisa went out of her way to make it home.
