Good bun, sauce, couple of wimpy semi slices of tomato and basically no lettuce. Good but not worth $15 and not what I would expect from Munther and Abe. We tried it here when they first opened. I had the halibut. It was fresh and outstanding. My husband had the lamb shank which was also very good. Checked this place out for Happy Hour and it was kewl! Happy Hour ends at 6:30 which is awesome. I was drinking the Maui Brewing Bikini Blonde which isn't found in many places so that was a hit. Happy menu had a lot of options all I think were half off the regular price? Tried the tempura calamari and I can't remember what the other dish was called but it was a brie that came with little pita breads. I thought the calamari batter could be better because it didn't hold to the calamari very well. The brie dish was actually pretty good. Next time I'll try the burger or chicken sandwich. The place was really nice, dark with perfect dimmed lighting, and the booths were super comfortable. Service was excellent. The 2 ladies behind the bar took care of the entire place with class and friendliness. Bottomline, this was our first visit and the next time we are in the area, we will definitely be stopping for a few drinks and a bite. read more

Novato needed this place for years. A great sports bar, lots of fine brews, friendly bartenders, and some really solid food thanks to chef Munther of Wildfox fame. My favorites here include the corn dog pops, the french dip and the burger, but everything I've had here has been excellent, including the fried chicken which is the real deal, my friend. The walls lined with growlers and big screen TVs, a full bar, and great appys and entrees make this another place that teems with regulars. Once you go there, you too will know why. side note: Munther is also about to reopen the Rickey's restaurant at InnMarin. That's another must try. read more

To me this bar is perfect! The Speakeasy is a little hole in the wall bar that does a great job at cultivating that 1920s speakeasy feel. What makes this place so special is how great the food is! Not only is this your local watering hole but they have such great food! We got the Wagyu slider, flatbread, and lobster and ginger pot stickers and they were all delicious. The slider is actually pretty big, it's in between the size of a typical burger and a slider and it was DELICIOUS. The flatbread and pot stickers were amazing too. My wife and I agreed that if we could only order 1 thing it probably would have been the flatbread. I was seriously blown away by the high quality of the food they offer. I was drinking whiskey and beer so that was that. My wife, who is very difficult to please with cocktails, requested something "kinda sweet with either tequila or vodka" and the bartender produced the PERFECT cocktail. She's a lightweight and she drank 3 she was so satisfied. The bartender was great and the rest of the staff were awesome too. Between the excellent food, great service, and spectacular cocktails, I highly highly HIGHLY recommend this bar. I can not wait to come back here to eat and drink. read more

I live near The Speakeasy, and after reading through their website and menus, I really hoped that I'd discovered one of those friendly, neighborhood, go-to restaurants offering thoughtfully prepared classic fare prepared by thoughtful chefs and cooks with exquisite palates and a high standard of quality. Boy, was I dreaming. I went there at least a half a dozen times and had some very good and okay dishes and meals, and finally, one of the worst dishes I've ever been served anywhere---and I'm old, and I've eaten in many countries in the Soviet Union, my previous low bar. Not to mention that I always tipped 20% even when getting takeout and that the waiters in the Soviet Union were friendlier. My last meal from The Speakeasy was a takeout of their fried chicken; picked up on time, it was still warm when I brought it home. The fried chicken was completely inedible---and I mean completely. It consisted of three pieces of dark, dry, rock-hard, heavily breaded matter in recognizable chicken-piece shapes. I showed it to my son, and we agreed that looked like they had been sitting in the bottom of a fryer for hours. They were both so hard that I was afraid I would break my teeth if I attempted a bite , and neither piece yielded to a steak knife. My son wanted nothing to do with the mess. Had I attempted to eat it in The Speakeasy restaurant itself, I would have flagged the waitress and asked for a refund. The thing about this experience that really broke my heart and made me sad rather than angry was that they had treated me this way: they had served me a meal that was completely inedible. I was stunned that any restaurant would serve anything like this to anybody. Had they no pride, no quality control, no standards? I was a waitress during and after college, and my ex-husband owned a very popular restaurant in Berkeley. I've called restaurants before to give them feedback if their food was below par, and I know that restaurants have bad nights. But what is the point in calling an unfriendly restaurant after an experience like this? I haven't been back since then, and even though their new restaurant, The Boardroom, has another menu that is mouthwatering to read, I won't risk it. I'd so much rather than say something positive than something negative, but after sitting with this disappointing experience for too long, I'm glad to get it off my chest. Caveat emptor. read more

While we're all on house arrest during this Coronavirus craze, I can't help but think about the restaurant meals that I'm currently missing & can't wait to revisit when they reopen. And one of those places/meals is the burger at The Speakeasy. I've long contended that this is the best burger in Marin that you've probably never had. And that's a shame, because this is a carnivore's dream-come-true. Picture this, if you will - two perfectly grilled quarter pound patties topped with American cheese, shredded lettuce, crisp onions, tomato, pickles, and some sort of magical "special sauce" sandwiched between two chewy buns. This burger is so damn big, I almost couldn't fit it in my mouth (not joking). The Speakeasy burger comes with a generous side of crispy fries or a salad (if you're on a diet). All of this for just $14.95! You'd be hard-pressed to find more burger bang for your buck around town. Once all this Coronavirus chaos subsides, I can't wait to celebrate my "social distancing" freedom here. read more

I'm a huge fan of a dark library type bar and The Speakeasy does not disappoint. Literally through a "library door" is a restaurant that's literally other worldly and like stepping back in time - white table coverings, welcoming outta this world friendly staff... honestly it's like a bit of a dream. What a pleasant surprise to find a restaurant so close to our home that is more than a casual dining. It's in an unassuming location. The food that we had was delicious. The ambiance was cozy and elegant. It had an old world feel and something I would experience in San Francisco than here in Novato. Our server was very attentive. I can't wait to go back. We tried dinner at the Boardroom. We thought the interior is beautiful and comfortable. The service was great too. But we didn't enjoy the food. We had the Caesar salad, and we didn't care for the anchovy on the top or the overwhelming fishy flavor in the dressing. The baked goat cheese was just ok. For entrees I had the gnocchi, which was totally different from what I expected. It's called Gnocchi Primavera so I expected some vegetables in it. But instead I got a heavy Ragu sauce with a lot of meat. My husband got the rigatoni with a creamy stroganoff sauce. That was pretty good, the best thing we had. For dessert we had the baked Alaska. That was cool watching it flame up, but neither the Cake nor the ice cream inside were very delicious. I found it kind of bland. read more

Amazing drinks and food plate options! The parking lot always seems to be full so you know this place must be amazing, I ordered a Moscow Mule and the steak street tacos last time we went. My boyfriend ordered the Pulled pork sandwich, all the food we got was soo good but just a fair warning all the greasy food and alcohol will have you feeling it the next morning! Next time I'll take it easy on the Moscow mules, I'm cutting myself off at 2 next time! We found the restaurant through local word of mouth Saturday night and are so glad we did! We didn't have a reservation for dinner on The Board Room side but were able to sit in the bar and it was great. As a party of four we tried two appetizers and four entrees. We had the baked goat cheese and cripsy polenta to start and then the mac and cheese, rigatoni, chicken and the impossible burger with gluten free bun for our gf vegan of the group! All amazing!
