The Spice Hut is one of the most well known restaurants here in Cranbrook. Usually the restaurant is busy around lunch and dinner time so I decided to go around 4pm. I was seated right away by a very friendly waitress and asked if I had any questions about the menu. Having had butter chicken many times, I decided to try something else. Here's what I ordered: 1. Fish Curry: This is my new go to dish. The fish slices were very tender and not overcooked at all. I asked for mild spice level and thought the curry had just enough spice level for me to handle. 2. Garlic Naan: I would definitely order this just on its own. It was so tasty! 3. Rice: I'm not exactly sure what they put in the rice but it was super flavourful! I don't know why I ate here. Chain restaurants are usually terrible. This place wasn't any different. Im fairly certain the vegetable pakora comes in frozen. Basically I got either quarters of a circle, and formed two near perfect circles. The vegetables were overworked, and mushy. They didn't use chickpea flour, and because of that they tasted dense. I asked the waitress if they made them, and she didn't know if they did or not. That's not a good sign. Had the chicken biryani. The rice was horrible. Both undercooked and crunchy, and overcooked and mushy. The garlic naan wasn't garlic, and wasn't made correctly. It was crunchy like a papadum, but not so thin. It's a pass for me. read more

I'm not from Cranbrook, but visit family here regularly. We often go out for dinner once when several out-of-town family members are in town, and this is a big favourite with everyone, from teens to my elderly dad. We went last night and had a great meal. I usual eat vegetarian food in Indian restaurants; last night I had karahi paneer with naan and was impressed with the well-blended and well-balanced spices, and overall delicious flavour. I did find the cheese a little less tender than I would have liked, but that was a minor quibble. Various others had lamb korma and karahi chicken. The naan was lovely - great texture, and warm when it arrived that the table. With regards levels of spiciness - always a gamble in a Indian restaurant - I found the medium was perfect - which for me means pretty spicy without making my head feel ilike it's about to come off. If you don't like it hot, order mild. Portions are decent without being overwhelmingly big. The service was good, but i think they could scale back a bit on the numbre of times they ask everyone how they're enjoying the meal. (The first pass was literally right after the last plate went on the table, and was "how's everyone enjoying the first bites?" Ask once a few minutes after everyone has started eating, and then check once or twice to see if anyone needs/wants anything. Much more helpful. I had wine and others had beer, but I don't know if they offer a full bar. This restaurant is actually part of a chain, with locations in other parts of Canada and the US. Limited menu but the food is ok. If they could only take a leaf out of a UK curry house and have a more extensive menu. If you only do a few dishes they need to be excellent every time. An interesting burst of flavor tucked away in a seemingly dead mall. I recently went in to try this restaurant with a group of 5. It would have been 6 had one of the classmates hadn't bailed for "other business" but that is irrelevant. The food was well prepared and is presented as a larger bowl of sauce with the meat and flavor arrangements selected directly from the menu. You will need to get some rice and/or naan bread to accompany the dish you have selected. The service is excellent and the pricing is not excessive. The flavors and choices are many, so many in fact that there are 2 flavors of naan bread. There aren't many downsides to this restaurant as the cuisine definitely tastes authentic. If you are not familiar with East Indian cuisine, you could bring a friend with exotic food experience, but even that may not be necessary as you could safely try anything on the menu without fear of disappointment. The waiting staff will ask you what your preferred spice level is so if you are not into spicy food, you could always ask for mild. of course you can always ask for extra spice which will be served on the side. The location can make it a bit hard to discover but I would definitely recommend this restaurant as a must, and worth venturing to this location. I will return. read more

The best Indian Restaurant in Cranbrook. Problem is, it's the only Indian restaurant in Cranbrook. They are trying, but some dishes are not very good. There are a few worth getting like the Korma, Bhindi, Naan but the Butter Chicken is really embarrassing. Campbell's soup anyone? Really, it needs work. Probably 3.5 stars. We had Aalo Gobi, Palak Lamb, and Coconut Lamb Curry with rice and garlic naan. We like just a little spicy, so at the servers suggestion we ordered spice level at 2 stars. It was tasty, but not spicy AT ALL. She brought a little shaker of chili powder and that helped. Wish there had been something like that already on the table or a chutney/sauce assortment to customize for individual palates. It's an expensive enough place that it warrants that. Cons: Naan looked amazing, but it was burnt enough one side that it was bitter. Also, food temperature was not hot which was frustrating because there was only us and another couple there. Any colder and I would have sent it back which I've rarely done. Besides, I was really hungry! Lol. Pros: Portion size was decent. It tasted good; not fabulous, but veggies tasted fresh and meat was tender. Flavor profiles were as expected (curry maybe a little too sweet)and much better once we added more spice. Ate here with the family on the way to Alberta. Legit Indian food, high quality ingredients. Be careful with your spice level, I consider myself to have a high heat tolerance and got the second highest level of heat for my vindaloo, it was REALLY spicy. read more

In my opinion The Spice Hot is a gem amongst the Cranbrook business community. The young female staff are polite, warm, friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. The food was delicious, fresh and to order. We ordered the lamb dishes were all delicious and well worth trying. The atmosphere was pleasant and current. I highly recommend this restaurant if you love authentic, tasty East Indian Cuisine. You will not be disappointed. read more

Yum! Amazing and probably some of the best Indain food that I have ever eaten. We ordered beef samosas, dahl, chicken masala and roti. The chicken masala was a hit, the other dishes were good too. This place was very flavourful. I had butter chicken with rice and garlic naan. The staff were very friendly. I accidently called and ordered my pick up to Canmore while I was actually in Cranbrook. Oops! They fixed my order and had my food ready in 15 minutes! I have eaten here before in Lloydminster and had a much bigger selection - it was great there too! read more

Great restaurant in an out-of-the-way non-descript location in a Cranbrook mall. Have been there a few times and went there for lunch with my family last trip. We tried the Aalo Gobi, Chicken Vindaloo plus Butter Chicken and all were very good. Friendly personable staff. Will return! read more

The service is wonderful here, they're so sweet. I'm crazy over their lamb korma and chicken korma, so I always have one or the other and haven't tried any other entrees. I don't like it too hot, and they make it perfect without sacrificing flavour, which is impressive. I suggest ordering a side dish of rice, since the korma dishes just come with meat and a great portion of sauce, and you can get three meals' worth out of one order just by adding the rice to the sauce.
