Quite disappointed given the rave reviews. My steak came well done, I ordered medium. It had a bitter taste I wasn't expecting, and was anything but tender. The mash was so dry, and very heavy. It was chewy, and certainly not light and fluffy as it should be. Frankly it tasted like they just added water from a packet. Don't get me started on the water like, bitter peppercorn sauce. Awful. I didn't finish the meal in the end. Getting the attention of the wait staff was nigh on impossible, pleasant as they seemed. It's rare that I don't tip staff but I didn't interact with anyone beyond someone dropping the food in front of me and never coming back. Food did come out very quickly and the onion rings were ok, crispy, but still very greasy. The ambience in here is a bit weird. Families, work groups, noisy, dark, and decor like you're visiting your auntie Kay in her front room. I've not been checked on in thirty minutes. Might be something to do with the awful table tucked against a wall.... I definitely wouldn't recommend eating here. Maybe two years ago it was good, maybe I got it on a bad night, maybe it just sucks. I'm going with the latter. There are plenty of other options sound Melbourne to eat. This was actually a pretty decent pub, particularly with the choice of beers they had on tap (being a number of decent craft beers). It seems to be more focused on being a restaurant than a pub, though the front section is more of a bar (though they tend to have high tables and stools, which I'm not all that fond of). There is also a nice beer garden, and it looks like it has been recently done up, which is also pretty cool. Mind you, the beer garden is designed mainly for smokers so unfortunately there is no food out there (though that may have changed). However, I still quite liked this pub, though it did sort of lack a uniqueness that sets it apart from a great pub. read more

I like the steak centric menu and quality menu additions such as pasta (duck, Bolognese etc), pate, calamari and definitely the gourmet burgers. If you're dining at the Station Hotel, you're in very safe culinary hands. I ordered the Station burger. Juicy and served with crispy onion rings. My only gripe Is that my request for an egg on the burger was, as the kitchen advised, $4 extra. I wouldn't have minded if the request was not possible, but $4 dollars to cook a common egg is riddicio Egg saga aside. I will be probs back. read more

Sunday night = steak night. I dine at the pub area of the venue, there are 2 tvs playing on the walls. You have to order at the bar. I had the scotch fillet and my friend the eye fillet. Both medium rare please with pepper sauce. We started the meal with the chautterie plate where there are some toasted bread, porscuitto, salami, pickled, onions, pate and some greens. It was not bad.... The steak came with huge cut potatoes that they called chips and salads. The potatoes wasn't something that I enjoyed eating, salad wasn't too bad. My friend's meat was cooked perfectly but mine was pretty rare. I could not managed half of it and I wasn't in the mood to bring it back...... I am disappoint to say I am not sure my experience here lived up to the reputation I have heard so much about.... read more

The station has ruined steak for me! Whenever I want a steak now this place has set the bar and the bar is high. Featuring an amazing steak list you can choose from a wide array of grain and grass fed beef and cuts. All steaks are served with chips and choice of sauce (I recommend the bernaise) However the station is not just about steak, their happy hour oysters are amazing and what really makes it for me is their desserts. I have been known to come here for a cheeky creme brulee just on its own as a treat. I have been going to the station for over 5 years and have never ever had a bad meal. It is not you usual pub prices but then again it is not your usual pub food either. I would recommend to book if you want to eat in the restaurant out the back but you can try your luck with the front bar tables which serve the same amazing menu. If you are a meat eater in Melbourne you have to try the station there is no way around this! read more

An oldie but a goodie. Great quality fresh produce, consistently well cooked, well seasoned, and excellent value for money. Hard to look past the stunning array of delicious steaks cooked to perfection - but you pretty much can't go wrong even if you pointed on any menu item whilst blindfolded. A few decent vego options available - the house made felafel is def a favourite of mine. Coupled with a good range of wines and craft beers, knowledgeable and friendly staff - makes for a great meal. Book ahead for the dining room, but the bar area is just as good if not more relaxed, with the same menu. Leave room for dessert - this is the hard part! But do try!!!! read more

In the top 3 of steaks in Melbourne along with Dinner at Heston and La Luna. Early on a Saturday the place was empty which worked to our advantage as we had no booking. The service was good, I wish there had been more craft beers - like some from the local brewery "Hop Nation" but the selection wasn't terrible. Now to the important stuff: THE COW! There are about 15 different types ranging from $35ish to $85. We had the eye filet and the rib eye. It comes with chips salad as well as bernaise and pepper corn sauce. It's a new year, new resolutions, new changes, but for me one thing stays the same. The hunt still keeps on going for a good restaurant where I can eat a great meal and drink great beer so I am left in a euphoric feeling for the rest of the night and even the next day. I decided to come back to the station hotel, one of the restaurants that were on last year's steak list, and wow it was the first one I marked off. The service was disappointing, I don't mean they were rude or anything I made a booking for me and two friends yet we came in five minutes late and we had to wait for a table for nearly half an hour. Same thing happened to us last time... The place had its usual atmosphere, at the front you have friends socialising over drinks with a sort of pub vibe and down the back is a classy restaurant where lovely couples and friends are having the time of their life indulging in their food. I couldn't wait the join them! The menu was what I remembered it to be, set out beautifully, each title in French and my favourite part, drumrolls please, the steaks were described in detail making them even more delicate. I went with the '400g O'Connor, Gippsland (VIC) 100% pasture fed select British breeds NY strip steak'. I've never tried a pasture fed steak before and also it being called the New York strip enticed me since I've seen on tv how good the steak gets up there. When I got it, it looked beautiful, I had to take a photo, and then grab the knife and cut it. It came with the sauce that me and my friends fell in love with last time. It was like garlic mixed with melted cheese. You know it's a good steak if you eat it by itself and it tastes good which it did, it wasn't the best I tasted but it was damn well worth what I paid for it. In the back of my mind I thought that this did not compare to what new yorks steaks would taste like, well I hope not else I'll fly there for nothing. It didn't have the depressing last bite of the steak appeal to it, like what happens with really good steaks I usually have. But overall it was a pleasant dinner, it shows that even little places like this pub/restaurant sell pretty decent meat and also it looks like an awesome place to go have a laugh with a group of mates. The Station Hotel is an old faithful for a pretty great steak! They've recently had a change of management & had just re-opened when we went in. They were one man down so service was a little slow but the staff were as endlessly helpful & lovely as ever & fortunately the food standard was as it had always been which is excellent!! It's casual dining but steak costs range from $30-$80 because the quality is excellent. The staff have great knowledge & will talk you through the cuts if you're unsure of what to order. The menu is certainly meat heavy but there's some good seafood & a couple of vege options too. They have a solid wine list & some very tasty entrees. Make sure you book for a weekend because they get very busy!! read more

I have been to this place 3 times for lunch in the last week. The first by myself, the second with my girlfriend, and the third with a friend. My menu options have been limited, but consistent largely secondary to how good the items are. The first meal I had here was a Station burger. So incredibly simple. A delicious balled up patty of great quality beef, some gruyere cheese and some lovely bacon on a simple bun. A bit deconstructed with some onion, mustard, sultana and chilli relish on the side, as well as some slices of tomato and some salad (including sliced baby gerkins!). Cost is $18.00 which is steep for lunch I suppose, but this is a phenomenal burger so I'm happy to experience the rare luxury for lunch. What can't I say about this burger. It is juicy and served rested so it isn't leaking all over the place. It is PERFECTLY salted, so you don't need to touch it, and the best addition of all is that relish on the side. It is absolutely the most delicious thing to put on a burger that I have ever had. I wish they would sell jars of that stuff and it would add so much to a bbq at home but that would eat into business I'm sure. (That being said have a look on their website, on their blog section "secrets of the station". They actually give the recipe for some of their sauces/chips/deserts etc which I think is really cool) The other items I have tried have been the lunch special which isn't on the menu. Its $12.50 for a open faced steak sandwich as well the soup of the day (not the menu soups). Sandwich served on some aioli with some lettuce and sliced onion. The steak is great quality, but honestly is not in the same league as the burger. Much more palatable for lunch though at $12.50, and the soups is quite a nice addition. Would love if they made it 15.00 including a drink but that might be a bit much and my cheapness coming to light :) Other things ordered has been the hand cut chips. Great potatoes, and I don't know how they do it so consistently being that all pieces are such varying sizes, but they are amazingly crispy on the outside, and fluffy on the inside. Served with aioli and tomato sauce. The last thing I have tried was the Hot Valrhona chocolate cake with rhubarb jam and vanilla ice cream. I personally wasn't a huge fan of this dish. I think that the cake was superb; however the pieces of rhubarb that they included were too large. It might be nicer if they ground it down to include it into the cake to get the flavour as an addition, instead of being too distracting from the chocolate. All in all I am very happy with this find. If I had to rate my favourite steaks of all time, I'm pretty sure the one I had last week at The Station Hotel would be high on the top of the list. A 200gm chunk of Hopkins River beef served with pepper sauce and chips the size of a small child's arm, this was the kind of steak I dream about when I get carnivorous cravings. Unfortunately I was having one of my (boring) "booze-free" nights so couldn't have a glass of something on the side, though you can be certain that I'll be back soon to work my way through not only the wine list but the incredible selection of meaty delights. read more

This pub has a reputation. A good one. The steaks are great. The service efficient and professional. Just book for peak periods, like Friday & Saturday nights, and if all else fails just prop at the bar and eat in the more casual setting there. read more

The Station hotel, what happened? It used to be a great destination for an awesome steak. Sunday dinner felt like an express lunch. No bread served before meal, drinks service very poor. Not being a regular (can probably count on one hand the number of times I have been) to Footscray, Station Hotel does seem a little far for steak if you are in the easter suburbs. But it was a family dinner and we all love steak, for a pub the number of parking spaces is horrible, nearby parking is hard to read with many local parking permits needed. From out the outside, Station Hotel does not look like anything special, but as soon as you walk in you are hit with an image of a large cow portioned off and showing off it's amazing cuts. (See Pictures) You can tell you are in a steak house. All of us ordered steak, I ordered the Tenderloin and was loving the medium rare piece of meat they served me. It came with peppercorn sauce and wedges (which were more like fat chips imitating wedges) and was a very good portion. Will definitely be back here to get my steak on! read more

Having previously had just an "ok" experience in the Station's dining room back in May, I wasn't expecting a lot from the bar. Well, dang it, I was wrong. Everything about the more casual pub section of the Station was pretty spot on, from the very friendly and helpful service, to the excellent range of local microbrews, to the very above-standard food. I have often bitched about the poor diversity of beers on offer in many Melbourne pubs (Carlton/cider/one microbrew), but this is not an issue at the Station where you have your choice of Carlton Draught, Mountain Goat steam ale, Four Pines IPA, an American brown ale, and a Trumer Pils. There's something for everyone on these taps, and they don't stop there, offering schooners (hooray) for those who need more than a piddling pot, but still want to be able to drive home legally. Our massive plate of fish and chips (24 dollars) came out incredibly fast and piping hot. Served alongside the expertly cooked and battered fish, were crispy potato wedges, and a heaping helping of fresh salad greens dressed with peas and mint. Vinegar and homemade tartar sauce with capers came alongside. The thing Frenchie was most pleased about was the complimentary delish bread from Noisette and good quality butter that was served before the meal and than happily topped up by our smiling server the moment we finished stuffing it into our gobs. Have not see that at a local pub before and it is serious CLASS. Oh, and the place is air conditioned. Nuff said. read more

Described to me as the cheapest best steak you can find in Melbourne, the Station Hotel really didn't disappoint! We opened with half a dozen deliciously fresh Coffin Bay oysters, topped with mirin, mushrooms, ikura, and mud crab. It was tasty, if a bit... misguided. There was simply too much going, the mud crab was completely overwhelmed and basically superfluous. The mirin was a bit strong for the oyster, and the saltiness of the oysters basically blocked out any flavour from the ikura. The mushrooms went well though, and again, the freshness of the oysters were indisputable. For steak I went for the 250g Wagyu x Holstein Rostbiff, rare, with Bernaise sauce. The steak was cooked as requested, the meat was tender, and delicious, the salad on the side was very generous, and those chips on the side were absolutely great as well. Two 250g steaks, half a dozen oysters, all for about $100. That's amazing value, especially since everything was of such high quality. read more

Easily the best steak I've ever had in my life. I ate here fairly recently for a family members birthday and ordered the eye fillet steak cooked medium rare with garlic and herb butter and a side of buttered green beans. There was not a single part of the meal I didn't find mouth wateringly delicious. The steak was nice and tender, not too chewy but chewy enough to have a great mouth feel. Green beans are one of my favourite vegetables and sides for a meal and I just couldn't eat enough of these ones. Aside from the food itself the restaurant also had a nice selection of alcohol featuring a few craft beers I was familiar with and a nice selection of spirits. I'd save this place for special occasions as it is very pricey but i'd argue that the food is well worth the price read more

As you walk in, you're greeted by an enormous bar with about 12 taps of local craft beer. The ambience was casual to semi-casual with a rather mixed clientele. Seating is formatted in central dining area adjacent to the kitchen, great for viewing your meals being prepared. I order two pints of Two Birds ale coupled with my bone-in angus steak cooked to a medium rare perfection sitting on a warm bed of crispy chips and lightly tossed greens. The service was very attentive and helpful when making menu recommendations. I would definitely make this a weekly visit if I could. read more

Worst steak I've ever had, don't get the wing rib! It was so bad we couldn't even finish it. On the other hand the early bird oysters and beer deal was excellent value. The chicken parfait was one of the best pats I've ever had and enough for four people. Ambience was good, my wine for $50 was very average but I tried the $70 red and it was a lot better (but not $70 worth). Seats were wooden with no cushions. If u want great steak go to squires loft South yarra, nowhere else comes close. Which cuts were other people ordering that were so wonderful? read more

I went to the Station Hotel for lunch today with a group of work colleagues. I had heard good things about the place since settling back in Melbourne after a few years overseas. Walking in I could see that the place had been freshly renovated. A large bar area leads into the dining area in the rear. The menu had an impressive array of steaks from the east coast states of Australia - prices ranged from about $28 for a 200g portion to $55pp for a 1kg heart attack! Pretty much everyone in our group ordered steaks. The waiter seemed very knowledgeable about the cuts and was very chatty. Service was very good on the whole. I ended up ordering a 250g Victorian cut and asked for 'medium'. Our meals arrived and all looked good - nice chunky hand-cut chips, salad and of course the steak. Only problem was that my steak was VERY RARE, and I mean really rare, very bloody, red virtually all the way through the meat. I asked the waiter whether he thought it was medium and he looked in disbelief - he apologised and whisked my plate away. A while later another steak arrived (it appeared to be a new steak as opposed to the old one slapped on the grill again). It was better but still RARE! By this stage my work colleagues were pretty close to finishing up so there was no way I was sending it back again. On the plus side, everyone else's steaks seemed to be cooked to their liking, so maybe I just got unlucky. In any case, I can't give the Station more than 2 stars - there's not much point in offering the best steaks in the world if you can't cook them right. UPDATE: Ok, I am upgrading my review from a measly 2 stars to a much more respectable 4. On my second visit, I had the 200 gm Hopkins River tenderloin and it was DELICIOUS! Cooked perfectly, easily one of the best steaks I've ever had. The peppercorn sauce and mustard was delectable, and the after lunch coffee was surprisingly good. Not to be confused with the Station Hotel in Prahran which incidentally is closing at the end of December 2012, the Station Hotel in Footscray is a magnificent if not random find. I knew it wasn't far away from Costco in Docklands but for whatever reason it wasn't until just the other day that I ventured there for a late lunch. Looking at the building on the corner of Napier and Hyde Streets you would think that you were in a small country village in England. It looked quaint and nothing like I imagined that I would find in multicultural Footscray of all places. I had to reference a Psychology textbook when considering the Station Hotel and what I observed after entering. We are all familiar with "locals" that frequent bars and pubs, and in this case, the trendy term can be applied, "gastropub" where locals are "Insider's" and all the others are considered "outsider's" which are in turn highly evocative terms. Insiders are supposed to be "in the know," which sounds positive, but they may also be seen as having an unfair advantage. Outsiders are ambiguous, often being seen as being excluded and negative, but occasionally as having an objectivity or freedom not possessed by people who have a stake in their membership in a class or system. An outside observer of a family or business may be an "outside agitator" but may also make observations and offer good advice because he or she is not so involved in the rewards and punishments of the system. I suppose I am the outside observer of sorts. Since starting this blog five months ago, I have frequently seen the "Inside/Outside" contrast alive and well in places that I normally would not visit and all too frequently in places that I either like or actually consider myself a local. With the all that in mind, this concept although seemingly valid by looking around the venue, once you dig deeper, chat and listen, I have found it to be one of the few places where you can feel included despite how you are dressed, what you may do for a living (some patrons were on furlough from an office building, others appeared to have been doing roadworks in the morning) or if you are a tourist, hipster, local or even an interested party like me looking for good value, good times and good food. It was refreshing and humbling to say the least. Having only have heard good things about the steak on offer at this place, I instead opted for the Gippsland lamb rump with pommes boulangeres, local asparagus and sauce Navarin ($38) and I am so pleased that I did. It arrived a perfect medium rare, with a nice charred flavour and cooked simply which I would be so bold as describe as the Heston Blumenthal technique. The lamb had obviously been rested and it was the perfect temperature when served. The asparagus was fresh and crunchy and full of flavour. After my recent trip to Attica, I wondered if this produce was farmed in Ben Shewry's garden as it was so good. My dining companion enjoyed the Penne, spicy bolgnaise, peas and fresh ricotta ($18) and he couldn't stop saying how good it was and was slightly taken back by the large portion size. I kept myself hydrated with 4 Pines and Mountain Goat Beer whilst enjoying this gastropub experience. There is a small beer garden of sorts that would have made a relaxed place to dine and hang out however on this occasion it was raining so I thought better of it. If only the Station Hotel was within walking distance to Southbank, I would make it my local. I haven't felt at "home" as much as I did in this pub since I lived in Sydney and made the Lord Nelson Brewery Hotel my home away from home. The great thing about the Station Hotel though is this exciting menu where I look forward to returning many times. I was also happy to learn that The Wayside Inn is its sister venue which is within walking distance from me so I am keen to visit it and as you would expect, report back on here soon. read more

Scotch fillet steak 9/10. Battered fish 9/10. Only complaint was the gravy was some weird sticky texture I wouldn't ask for that again. The salad with steak was basic but I guess that's standard for a pub. Oysters natural were great would recommend. Good service but I would like to have been asked for a second drink. We will definitely dine here again. The food and the service were excellent. We ordered both croquettes for our entree. A sign of things to come. We ordered the Wagyu special (BMS9). First time I have had Wagyu (finally!). It was delicious. I would probably request less of a sear on the outside, but that is just personal taste. My husband loved his as is. The hand cut chips were yummo! Yummy sauces. My only complaint ... no room left in my belly to try the chocolate fondant lol. Will have to return. read more
