There are walking, biking trails and trees throught the park are identified. Plenty of green space to relax and enjoy the beauty and peacefulness of the park. My mom and I spent a couple hours on a Saturday exploring out the Connecticut museum of culture and…read morehistory, which we had both never been to before! The architecture of the building was pretty cool, as it used to be an old mansion. It took us about 2 hours to get through everything. Their permanent exhibit on the inn and tavern signs was cool to look at, and we enjoyed their current exhibit on coffee. There's interactive experiences for all ages, and I'm so glad we visited. Highly recommend going to learn more about CT's history!

The staff person at the front desk was very welcoming and informative. It's a tiny museum and made very accessible and appropriate for school aged children. I'm sure local schools are sending field trips here all the time. That being said, I also enjoyed how the museum explained the cultural history of Connecticut. There's an entire room dedicated to historic tavern signs that my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed. In another area, we learned much about the Wide Awakes and their methods for getting Abraham Lincoln elected in 1860. In a third area, the we learned about why the Charter Oak symbolizes liberty. The museum also has rotating exhibits. We had just missed one about the history of chocolate and now they are setting up a new one about the origins of coffee. Overall, a delightful 1 hour spent for $6 a person (regular adult admission is $12 but another area was being renovated so we got a 50% discount).

Both of my kids participate in lessons, classes, and concerts through the Hartt Community Division, and they are one of the best-organized youth music programs of this type in the country. Having observed numerous Suzuki schools in the US, Asia, and Europe, I am always impressed at the quality of the organization and the consistently high level of music making of the students at the concerts. The cello studio, in particular, is always a joy to hear, with strong performances at every level, from "Twinkle" to Tchaikovsky. The instructors are highly engaged with the students, and I am always enthused at the depth and breadth of material covered in their private lessons--and parents are encouraged to attend and take notes until the students are old enough and don't want us there anymore. :)

We attended a living history tour with Livy Clemens (aka Beth in the present day), who was a…read morespectacular tour guide. Within about two minutes, the entire tour group was under her spell, never doubting that she WAS Livy. Seeing the gorgeous, perfectly restored house through her eyes and learning the history of the family from her perspective was fascinating. She even asked if she could practice playing for us the piano piece she had memorized so she wouldn't be so nervous playing in front of guests at her upcoming piano recital! Livy/Beth was so gracious and patient with my mom, who needed a little extra time getting up and down the stairs. (For other visitors, it might be helpful to know that there are railings on BOTH sides of the main staircase that leads up to the 2nd and 3rd floors, but the kitchen staircase only has a railing on the left.) And Beth even stayed after the tour to answer "modern-day" questions once she was no longer portraying Livy. We would love to come back and take another tour with Livy or any of the other actors who expertly bring this gorgeous national treasure to life.
