Okay, a preface to my review before you hear about my experience. This place is a historic home in historic downtown McKinney. It's absolutely beautiful, and makes amazing pictures for your wedding day. Nothing that I have to say is about how beautiful the location is, or any crazy hidden surprises (okay, maybe one) about the house. Please, look at the photos I posted from my own wedding to see how incredible this place looks and how well it photographs. Now, on to why it got three stars. When we first went (a year before our target wedding date) we were told that there were only 2 weekends left in the month of October and that it would cost x amount of dollars more (I can't remember the exact number) if we wanted an evening wedding because it was "in such high demand". We really loved the place, some friends of ours had been married there, so we swallowed the pill and moved on. Looking back, I really doubt it was that crowded seeing how easily they got us in for a rehearsal practice, I think we got ripped off. During the many many months up to the wedding they were so hard to get a hold of. They never answered their phone and sometimes it took two or three urgent voicemails before they would call us back. The woman who owns it convinced us we would need the extra hour added on to our package and when we didn't even remotely use it (finished earlier than the original time anyway) they wouldn't refund us even though THEY got to go home early because of it. Several things the actual week/day of the wedding. At our rehearsal we noticed that a strand of lights on the gazebo was out, we asked them to fix it and they didn't. The owner's mother is a florist and when we refused to use her because her prices were OUTRAGEOUS they retaliated (or so we believe) by leaving this horribly ugly bright orange/palm leaf floral arrangement on the top of the gazebo. Our colors were brown and blue, and she knew we were getting married later and left it up. It's now in all of our wedding pictures (see the example I posted) and honestly made putting our wedding album together a $@&!# because it was in EVERYTHING. We had to do a bunch of black and white photos because of it. I am still angry about it. As far as the weird surprise goes, their "bride's suite" is behind their laundry room and not very well appointed. We had to rent a hotel room so my party and I could get dressed because honestly, there is no where to sit down in there. Also, laundry room. Also, scary as hell doll-filled room right next to it. Like seriously, this is a lost scene from that weird 80's movie where dolls kill everyone. Also, the food we sampled at the tasting we went to was not what the food tasted like the night of my wedding. They cater their own weddings and the food at the tasting was pretty good, the night of it was disgusting. I really think they used left-over food from the wedding before because it was luke-warm like it had been under a heat lamp and flavorless. Luckily my cake was incredible and made up for it. They really made my wedding difficult to enjoy. They were not there to help us at all, and the women we hired to be "day of wedding helpers" were the only reason my party and I even got down the aisle. They were way overpriced for the terrible level of service they provided, and the terrible catering. Their only saving grace is the beauty of the house and the picturesque aspects of historic downtown McKinney. read more

This venue, if you choose, is all inclusive, venue, cakes and catering. We just held our granddaughter's reception there this past weekend. The owners, Carol and Cheryl are awesome to work with and are available any time you need them for anything. The home is just beautiful and has a lot of character, which makes it exciting to decorate. We were able to go the night before the wedding and set the venue up. When we arrived after the wedding on Saturday the owners and their crew were busy as bees making sure the guests had everything they needed. The cakes they made were awesome and the food was delicious. The punch is exceptional and the chocolate fountain was a huge hit. The bride and groom were extremely pleased as were all the guests, and this grandmother was smiling. Everything was affordable and worth every penny. read more

We got married at the Surrey House and Gardens this spring - what a lovely, historic venue for a small wedding! Everything about the experience was wonderful. Cheryl and Carol were so responsive and thoughtful the entire time, and everything went extremely smoothly on the day of the wedding. We had the Surrey House cater as well, and food was excellent. On August 3rd 2013, I was fortunate enough to marry the most amazing woman in the world. As expected, The Surrey House accomplished everything possible to ensure that beautiful moment would last forever. The building is absolutely beautiful and immaculate. We instantly fell in love with the high ceilings, timeless wooden floors, and overall classic feel. Working with the staff was great. Every promise they made was fulfilled. On wedding day, everything was ready, clean and beautiful. The staff was congenial towards our guests and made everyone feel at home. The food was great and plentiful. They did an amazing job on the cakes (My grooms cake was an exact replica of an Oreo) . The background music was great. The DJ did a great job of setting up the dance floor and getting people involved to really make it a party. People were happy and having a good time. Everything went perfectly and the experience was one to remember. Another experience that sums up just how considerate and thoughtful the Surrey House is, was what happened after the reception. It was time to go on our honeymoon and the staff surprised us by packing up our cake and multiple meals for us before we left. This really impressed me. My wife and I were absolutely starving and exhausted from standing and talking to guests all day. It was really thoughtful of them and considerate. Our wedding was one to remember. Overall, the Surrey House not only met, but exceeded all our expectations. They are very professional, experienced, and affordable. We just had our daughter's wedding at the Surrey House. It was a great!! The setting and house were beautiful. We found the two owners easy to work with and it was very reasonably priced. Their recommended DJ and Bartender were also Pros. The only reason this isn't a 5 star rating is that the food was just kind of average. Im not much of a writer or reviewer but i do have to leave this review. My husband and I were married here a little over a month ago. I honestly could not have been any more happy. Anything we had a question about throughout planning they answered. Reaponse time was great! Although I will say im not a very demanding person and I'm very patient. They got us in for rehearsal the night before, that went great. The day of we were allowed on site 1 hour before the ceremony. I will say, if you can, buy some extra time, because 1 hour was not enough. Maid of honor and bridesmaids rushed to finish last minute decorations and i completely forgot to set up my unity sand and get the flower girls flowers out of my car. You definitely need more than 1 hour. Luckily just as flower girl was walking down, Carol of the Surrey House stepped in and gave us replacement flowers. I can't begin to describe the relief i felt. Thank you so much! The ceremony went fabulously, the reception was decorated beautifully, the food was wonderful! We did pasta salad, chicken, fruits, veggies, cheese and crackers, croissant sandwiches, and they even threw in a few things. The house is old and antique. Exactly my style. It's just beautiful! They have an awesome bartending company they are partnered with as well as many other vender suggestions. Although my mother made my cake, they do that as well as floral arrangements and catering. We had about 75 guests at our wedding and everyone fit very nicely. It's right off the square. We stayed at the grand hotel, walking distance if you had a few drinks like we did. I actually had two events held at the Surrey House. (The day I was married was already booked for the evening.) I had really wanted an evening reception, but as I had many friends, and family from out of town that I needed to feed it was looking like I would have to give up my dream of the evening reception. Cheryl, and Carol were very kind, and helpful, and worked an AMAZING deal for me so that I could keep within my budget, while having what I wanted, and what I needed. I had a luncheon after my church wedding, for close family, and friends. Then I had a reception there the following night, for the majority of my guests. It was beautiful, both days!! Everything was already set up, the food was hot and ready to eat, the moment we walked in. It was delicious!! Many times I heard throughout the night from my guests how beautiful everything was, and how delicious it all was. Not once did I see a dirty dish left on the table, on either day. They kept things cleaned up, and beautiful while being very discreet in the process. When we forgot our wedding song they actually had a backup of songs for us to use. They were very friendly, and were never annoyed at any request I asked of them. (I wanted the floors cleared for dancing and they jumped right on it.) They did everything with a genuine smile, and were actually happy to do it. They were very easy to talk to, and to work with. I knew they were there for me, and they bent over backwards both days to make sure my wedding was the dream wedding I had always envisioned. Thanks soo much!! I used their Surrey House Florist too, and she went above and beyond in pleasing me. In fact she is one of the sweetest people I have ever met!! The flowers were absolutely GORGEOUS!! I couldn't have wished for a more beautiful bouqet, and floral arrangements. Such exquisite detail was put into designing them, and the best part was, the prices were very reasonable compared to many other florists I had spoken with. Not only did she give me what I asked for, but she also included extra. Needless to say I was very pleased with the whole experience, and I would highly recommend their WHOLE company to anyone looking to keep within their budget while having a beautiful dream wedding. read more

I just had my daughters wedding shower at The Surrey House and it was amazing. The house was the perfect setting for this special occasion. All of my guests enjoyed the fun venue. They did a great job on the brunch buffet, several of my guests commented on how delicious the food was. The covered patios came in handy since it was pounding down rain that day. Our wedding at the Surrey House was absolutely perfect! This was the second marriage for us both, and was a wonderful event for our 6 adult children/spouses and family from out of town, with a total of 70 guests. The day was beautiful and we were able to marry outside in the wonderful gazebo and guests had fun on the back deck with festive twinkly lights:) The entire home was just repainted and original wood floors newly refurbished for our event. The inside of the home was a perfect venue for dinner and dancing - we had many guests and all commented on what a wonderful venue, as well as how delicious all of the food was, and especially the fabulous cake! Carol and Cheryl were dreams to work with and made the entire process efficient and flawless. We had our wedding and reception at the Surrey House on Wednesday, February 17. The day before we decided to have the ceremony outside since the weather was so beautiful. Everything at the Surrey House was beautiful as well. The set up, inside and out, the food, the flowers, the cake, the service, etc. All of the folks the Surrey House recommended (music, photographer and bar tender) were amazing too. If you ever need a venue for any type of get together, formal or not, please seriously consider contacting the Surrey House. They are the total package!!! read more
