Phenomenal. Upscale dining but in my opinion, the prices are not gouged, and fair for the quality. Excellent for a celebration, or just a special night out. Originally a pair of eighteenth century Acadian cottages that were joined to make one residence, it now houses the Sycamore House, a lovely restaurant perfect for any special occasion. It oozes southern charm and is oh so romantic. The service was top notch from the bartender down to the server who brought out our entrees. For starters we decided on the barbecue shrimp and the Thai scallops. The scallops were definitely the star of the entire show. Jumbo pan seared scallops served with cellophane noodles and peanut sauce with an Asian lime vinaigrette. Exquisite. The barbecue shrimp were just ok. They serve it with a sauce that is slightly sweet and I felt that that aspect could be left out. Spicy BBQ shrimp are better, in my opinion. I chose the salmon for my entree and it was cooked perfectly and served with jalapeño garlic butter. Very, very tasty. All in all it was a great experience and I'll be back for sure. Three and a half years later, the four of us enjoyed another wonderful meal at The Sycamore House. It was a great meal with excellent service. The menu had changed somewhat from our last visit and the new items were good additions. Each course was excellent. The Thai dish with scallops was very good but be forewarned about the slices of jalapeño peppers - if you don't like spicy food, don't eat them. I cleaned my plate including the peppers but the dish would have been as good without eating them. Starters included Caesar salad, shrimp and a house salad. Our entrees included a filet Mignon (cooked to perfection - at least medium rare but not more than medium), Ropa vieja (which is Cuban style brisket), the evening's fish served amandine and their Thai-Indonesian style curry with shrimp. We all cleared our plates. Dessert included mint chocolate chip ice cream, creme brûlée and key lime pie. Excellent choices from an interesting menu. One final note - we did ask to move from the room along the front of the house to the room on the side because the chairs in the side room are more comfortable. Small point but thought it turned out to be important for this evening's meal. If we hadn't moved, we would have talked about how uncomfortable those chairs were. Would go again and again. read more

It's very cozy inside and makes you feel you are truly at a restaurant, which is odd to find along the Gulf Coast. Nice greeting, pleasant & attentive staff. Medium length wine list that has been thought and tasted through. Very reasonably priced quality Californian wines, e.g. from Alexander Valley. Bit of a confusion as 'specials' were rattled off, but natives probably can cope well enough with this. Short menu of well thought out dishes, with some simple (and all the better for it) fish and a little fusion. Well and carefully prepared with excellent veg decorations. Sensible sized portions. Deep potholes leading to a congested parking lot. No salt and pepper on any of the tables. $22 for seven "large-ish" grilled shrimp. This place is more "style over substance". The experience is very restrictive and the portions small. They choose the sides for your entree and they don't tell you what they are unless you ask. The sides I got were a tablespoon of grilled veggies and some orange bland mixture with the consistency of Gerber baby food. It was really bad. I think the "baby food" was sweet potato or pumpkin but so bland you couldn't tell. We were in and out in less than an hour - just nothing approaching an experience you'd want to hang out for. There's much better faire in Bay St. Louis within walking distance of this place. read more

We had a very unpleasant lunch experience at the Sycamore house this past Saturday. While the setting and menu looked very good, they only had one person waiting on tables for the lunch crowd. It took 90 minutes for us to order and be served an appetizer and sandwiches. When the sandwiches arrived, my ropa poor boy was Luke warm, and the hamburger my wife ordered was over cooked. My impression is that if we had been regular customers, the service would have been better, but as we were new, they shuffled us off into side room with another couple who could safely be ignored. If you are a regular local customer, by all means go and enjoy the atmosphere and the menu, but if you are visiting, avoid this place like the plague. read more

This a beautiful space/environment for a fabulous meal. It is "southern elegant" and before we were even seated I felt a bit pampered and relaxed. This sort of restaurant is where you dine for the experience, not merely to feed your body. That means your food is not going to be plopped down in front of you minutes after ordering with the warning "the plate may be hot" (because it has been sitting under a heat lamp). Every dish presented was obviously made for that specific diner and the care given the development of the meal shined. For the evening we had turtle soup, scallops and the Drum. Though they have been in business since 2002 this was our first trip to the restaurant. The house is a lovely original house that would be easy to believe is a residence if not for the sign in front. We were seated in the front room that has the fireplace and view of the front porch. There is also a side room and a back patio that would be lovely in cooler temperatures. Since we were there on the day that the Olympics opening ceremonies were occurring it was not busy at all (not so good for them, great for us). Service was very attentive and correctly handled, especially the wine presentation. Our server was glad to see us and made a nice conversation about the area. The wine list was very solid with many choices at different price points but nothing that would require a home equity loan to afford. There is a nice balance between old and new world selections with a small edge to California/Washington. We selected a Charles Krug Chardonnay - slightly off the beaten path but a nice bottle. The food - we started with the crab and mushroom cheesecake that was very good. It is lighter than you would expect and had good crab flavor that was not overbearing; a great starter to the meal. Next we had the house salad and the spinach salad, both of which were outstanding. The dressing complemented the greens rather than drowning them and the goat cheese and blue cheese added great flavor. Main courses were the Shrimp & Grits and the pan seared Scallops. Both dishes were excellent. The Shrimp and grits had the correct amount of spice to make you pay attention but not dull your taste buds for the grits. The scallops were cooked all the way through without being chewy (how do they do that?) and the sauce was wonderful. As you can tell, they went from strength to strength throughout the meal and it was a great dining experience. We heard the chef/owner commanding things from the kitchen a couple of times, an indication of their passion and attention to detail. If you are in town, make sure you have at least lunch here - we did not try their pizza but heard great things from the locals; and we highly recommend dinner. Bon Appetit! read more

I give the pizza 5 stars but everything else 3. They serve the best pizza I have ever eaten. If you like olives you must try the Mediterranean pizza. We highly recommend the bbq shrimp pizza. I craving it just thinking about it. We try the entrees often but always go back to the pizza.Their entrees are pretty good as well. They serve moderate portions that are not heavy. I have to admit, the place is a bit stuffy. Inside is quiet, awkwardly. You'll eat on dainty mismatched china, which I found cute. If your dressed down and are looking for a good conversation at a normal level, I recommend asking if you can sit out back or on the porch. read more

The Sycamore house is a top notch eatery in the small town of Bay St. Louis. For not being on the water, the restaurant makes up for it with the charm of an old southern plantation set amongst beautiful trees and landscaping. The food here is some of the best in BSL. We started with the crabmeat and mushroom cheesecake, which was awesome, and then I had the turtle soup followed by the ropa viejo. All three dishes lived up to expectations and really hit the spot. If you do choose to eat here, prepare for higher prices and for a quiet environment. The restaurant is perfect for a date night or a special occasion, but isn't the best for large loud groups or little kids. I gave this restaurant a 2/5 because when we arrived with our 3 kids they wouldn't accommodate for our 9 month old son. They wanted us to put him against the wall by his self! Like who does that? They were very rude to us. My sister has the salmon salad and she was food poisoned along with my brother and law and niece and nephew who had a taste of her salmon. They parking was difficult, the atmosphere wasn't the greatest, there was dust everywhere! On the plus side, I'm vegan and I love that I had a few option to choose from. If the restaurants on the beach are a bit too touristy for you, I'd recommend coming inland and visiting this is a cute little spot with casual seating and a cool back porch. Its no less touristy but at least you feel less like a schmuck when you eat here. They have pizza. Some random quasi-Mediterranean dishes. A duck confit. A couple po' boys. Boring... I would have really liked to find some home style rice and beans. Or a crawfish stew. Something seasonal. Something regional. I was SO disappointed with our dinner last night. They were really off their game. It happens. I know. I hope it was just a one night thing because I h as he had some excellent meals here. I had the house salad which was excellent and the Poisson almondine. The almonds were burned and almost rancid. My fish was served on a bed of rice. That was weird. My friends' entrees were just ok, nothing wrong, just ok. But the service was off, took forever for a staff person to b rating menus, take drink orders, to bring food...everything was off. Sycamore House is a beautiful old house in the heart of Bay St. Louis. We were seated in the front room right next to the loudest, drunkest table. It was extremely loud throughout the meal, but that can't really be helped by the restaurant. The Ceasar salad was a good start. I ordered the scallops and they were amazing. My husband ordered the half filet with some type of spiced barbecue sauce on it. Both of our entrees were wonderful. After eating, we finished with a coffee and glass of wine on the back patio. It was super quiet back there bc it had recently rained and we were the only guests venturing outside. My ears needed a break from the crazy noise.
