    The bar and menu.
    Dayana P.

I loved the idea of this bar. You either have a seat or a section or you can't order drinks. However, in order for this to work, the service has to be exceptional. The service was good and bad at the same time. They took over 30 minutes to bring us our first round of drinks. We saw other people who arrived after us being served first. The drinks were alright. Nothing as special as I thought, based on the menu. We left after our first round. I'm going to assume they don't like American customers. They were more worried about every other guest than us. They were more concerned about other guests and a man who kept walking around and talking to everyone.

There comes a point during your visit to Amsterdam when a respite from weed stores, women for rent in windows, pancakes, party boats, and throngs of tourists discovering mushrooms is much needed. Found it! (Actually on the list of places recommended by a well-traveled friend)... The Tailor is located inside the Anantara Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky, a really cool property with a fascinating past, slightly removed from the messiness. You'll know when you see the doormen who actually stopped us from accidentally walking by as they knew what we were seeking. If their warmth and intuition are any indications of the hotel staff, I am staying here next time! Please take a moment to appreciate the lobby now, in case you overindulge at the bar. Not only are their uniquely crafted cocktails delicious, but they are made with care and inspired by a theme close to my heart - textiles and tailoring as a nod to the founder. This is some history I lean in for... We went twice over a few days. Why? -Mood: Gold-flecked valium. That translates to dim lighting, lush decor, and tall comfy chairs that make you feel like the CEO of something. If I could live here I would. -Drinks: Check out the menu (barthetailor.com) as I cannot recite everything so amazing; divided into Ancient, Pre & Post Industrial. They do off-menu stuff too and will pair with your choice of food or a cigar. -Snacks: Served with accompaniments not even in the same realm as peanuts or pretzels. -The staff: Be sure to watch the masters at the bar! Plus, everyone just gets it - from the fact that they know when to appear, to their complete knowledge of all things related to the Tailor and its menu, their pride comes through as they share the genesis of each offering. They have food as well, but we arrived after dinner both times. I'd love to know how they elevate nachos. I can't even come up with a cute closing salutation for this review, I'll just shut my eyes and imagine I'm still there.

    Charcuterie and bread. Yum!

Boujee cocktail bar! Delicious mixed drinks and good little bar snacks. They also have a humidor so you can pick out and enjoy a cigar on the back patio. We were also allowed to have our dog with us on the patio which was nice. I got the gin cocktail pictured and it was delicious. Not overly "spirit forward" but instead nicely floral. They have a nice whiskey list and my husband enjoyed looking that over and ordering a boujee whiskey to have with his cigar. We also got the charcuterie platter with bread and cheese and it was quite good. I normally don't enjoy Hite bars, but this one was definitely really worth the visit.

This bar is a tremendous experiential libation. If you're from California, it's a "Tubular Libation"! Ok, to begin with, drinks are grouped in themes around the rooms of this historic hotel, the Krasnapolsky. Then the drinks are a jazz improv on some traditional drinks, lIke a Tailor Martini that has a house blended gin (A+ from a gin lover!), dry Vermout, a hide caper (looks like a small olive with a stem), fennel and Chardonnay in a liquid nitrogen frozen glass. Martini drinkers will bow at the temple here!! Then there are pure flights of fancy like "First Blood" a wonderful ice cold frozen fruit drink with Italian bitters, wine, cherry and watermelon or the Latin Heatwave...suffice it to say Coffee Rom Zacapa 23, WF Kaffa, orange liquor and cardamom....whah whaaaaat?!? Aaaaand, top it off by asking for Thalys, one of the best bartenders I've experienced. He's been invited to China to compete in the International competían for cocktails and Bar-tendending.

Amazing cocktails and super friendly staff. They love to chat with you and we enjoyed free shots of Amsterdam made cognac! Also you can order off the menu and they will create incredible concoctions. The staff is knowledgeable about the area as well so a good source to learn about the city and where to go. The bar is a bit tricky to find as it's located inside the main hotel. Trust me, it's worth it.

Carlota who answered the doorbell, was able to accommodate us at the bar (our preferred seating anyway). She took our coats, placed them in the coat closet up front and led us inside. Once seated, we were given gorgeous ruby red complimentary aperitif (hibiscus, honey, ginger). The drink menu is interesting, based on the concept of growing up, with more basic tastes to start and more mature complex tastes later on in life. (The drinks are more complex the later in the menu). I ordered the Awake at Last, and my husband ordered the Ruby Stone. Mine was sweet and coffee flavored and his was more tart and sour cherry flavored. When I tried his drink, I immediately felt nostalgic because it reminded me of umeboshi (pickled plum in Japanese food), so we ended up trading drinks. Both were great for supping. Sitting at the bar was fun, watching the bartender at his work. He was silent, focused, skilled, professional. So glad we checked it out! I didn't post pictures of the entrance or inside because I'll leave it to you to discover! (The fun of a speakeasy).

Most of the establishments looked pretty quiet and dead except for Smokey and the club next door. Since we weren't in the mood for clubbing, we decided to go to Smokey. The moment we walked in, I noticed that it totally lived up to its namesake and was totally... smokey. Too smokey. It almost seemed like there was a fire going on inside. The place was pretty packed and busy, but we managed to snag a little bar table by the door. It was next to the vending machine for ciggies and under a large clock, so I could keep tabs on exactly what time it was. :) I sat on a high bar stool by the wall, while my bf sat with his back towards the room. It wasn't the best position for him to be in, as people kept bumping into him as they were walking by. He got a beer, and I ordered a mint tea because I didn't feel like drinking any more alcohol. I loved how the mint tea came with tons of fresh mint leaves. Totally awesome. They also gave me a Pickwick English tea bag with it, which I didn't bother to put in, as I didn't want any caffeine so late at night. We left after only one drink, as we were tired and the place was too smokey to hang out for long.

Let's just say I observed certain recreational activities in Amsterdam that I think the world should know about. Amsterdam is brand spankin' new to Yelp, after all. So they need all the reviews they can get. Smokey's is smack in the middle of Rembrandt Square, which is a haven for tourists. The inside resembles an above ground neon-lit cave. Pool tables in the back. Music videos playing on the flat screens. Every time I hear Kid Cudi's "Memories", I think of this place. Everyone stopped what they were doing to sing along :) Tables are communal. Most patrons are college-aged. They have a zig zag vending machine and they sell pre-rolled or bagged product. According to my traveling companion, their merchandise was much more pricey than at neighboring coffee shops (like Rokerij, which is awesome), but since Smokey's is a better hangout spot in a more central location - you pay a bit more. The quality is mediocre, though. I enjoyed a 4 euro pineapple strawberry smoothie at the bar. They don't serve alcohol here though, only smoothies, which I found to be quite common in the coffee shops of Amsterdam. The folks behind the counter were pretty nice folks, too. Overall, I would recommend Smokey's for the younger crowd.

We ordered beef bitterballen to try this traditional Dutch comfort food. Meanwhile, my husband ordered their signature cocktail called "Beurre Noisette" old fashioned and I ordered a Dutch Negroni (Negronis are my favorite drink to order wherever I go). Both were delicious! Meanwhile, we chatted with Iago the bartender, and Lily the manager. We learned more about Amsterdam and why so many people come here from elsewhere in Europe to work. Iago was super fun to talk to. He'd lived in Amsterdam for 7 years and It was only his first week here at NJoy. He was skilled as a bartender, being able to mix fabulous cocktails and also hold an interesting conversation at the same time. We'd go back just to be able to talk with him again, such a friendly bartender, very attentive, and professional. The beef bitterballen was so hot we had to wait a bit to try it. It comes with savory mustard that is better than any mustard I've tried before. Not sure why. The bitterballen were crispy fried with beef ragú inside. I'm not a fan myself but am glad I tried it. NJoy is elegant and romantic and cozy. There's another bar downstairs with a disco ball above. It would be fantastic to host a celebration event here. Their cocktails are memorable! Highly recommend!

We went on an evening when it was NOT packed, so it was easy to snag a seat at the bar. This place is a treat for the eyes. There are a lot of interior design touches that make it fun to look around and spot cool things/touches like the back wall of the bar and the lighted ceiling display. The upstairs was closed the evening we visited, but the manager allowed us to go up and take a few photos, which was kind. Speaking of the staff...the manager moves quickly, and will absolutely recognize new patrons (this isn't the type of place where you'll be casually ignored all night) There's a live DJ spinning in the corner, and he was pretty legit. The star of this review, however, is the super-hot bartender, Juno. There's an extensive list of drinks at this place, but my partner and I decided to order off-menu, asking Juno for an Old Fashioned. She was so cute. Her eyes lit up, she smiled a little, and walked away to prepare our drinks. When she came back a few minutes later with our drinks (they were truly beautiful and she'd even rimmed the glass with an twisted orange peel) she THANKED US for giving her "a real drink to make." We'd only planned to have the one drink and move on, but Juno's drinks were do damn good we decided to have another round and a shot for the road. Both my imagination and my immediate girl-crush deluded me into thinking Juno winked at me as I paid the bill and she said, "Do come back."
