Our taxes tend to be complicated as we own numerous businesses and rental properties that we have to account for on our taxes. In the past we've always done our own taxes but this year we decided to setup a test: We did our own taxes and then took our taxes to three different tax accountants in the area to see if whatever additional savings they were able to come up with paid for their tax services. We found three different types of services to evaluate: 1) Liberty Tax - your run of the mill chain tax shop 2) Gardiner & Appel - a high end boutique accountancy firm in Severna Park 3) The Tax Expert - a small independent shop in Glen Burnie run by Bob Hannan Our findings might surprise you, ranked below (worst to best): Last Place: Gardiner & Appel - we had hopes going to this firm as we thought their nice lobby and premium location would translate into extremely smart accountants (we were wrong). We met with an accountant for about an hour who collected all of our financial data and then sent us on our way. A couple weeks later we finally heard back. The results? A bill for $1,250 and no additional savings over the taxes we did on our own whatsoever. In fact, when I questioned the high bill (initially we had been told we could expect to pay around $500) the lady we worked with turned extremely rude and insulted us numerous times for having the audacity to question their prices. What a nightmare, do not recommend at all. 2nd place: Liberty Tax - the results at Liberty Tax were about what you'd expect. You don't really get to work with a true certified tax accountant, they're simply filling out forms on a computer the same way you can easily do yourself using a program like TaxAct. They charge a fixed rate based on the type of forms/schedules you're filling out, and offer little insight beyond what is visible on the computer system. Liberty Tax found some small things that would save us money but the $644 they found in additional savings did not beat their $800 price tag. First place: The Tax Expert (Bob Hannan) - Bob was nothing short of amazing. Not only did he find us numerous areas we were missing deductions for the year we went there for, after reviewing previous years he found additional savings we missed and did adjustments to get additional money back from the previous year as well. Even more impressive was him doing research on numerous things well after doing business with him in March. In August I emailed him to ask about a solar tax rebate and he took the time to look up tax code for me. Then again in September when there was another question he went back and spent even more time to get things right for us. We ended up paying Bob $450 and saved more than $3,000 in deductions we otherwise would have missed. These are legal and legitimate deductions as well, nothing questionable about it at all. Bob knows tax law and takes the time to get to know his clients. We've moved from the area now but will be returning each year to continue to do business with him, he is just that great. I highly recommend Bob, his services are above and beyond what you'd expect and at a price that can't be beat. Thank you Bob! read more

Bob's son is good to work with. He is disorganized and not great at communication, but he is affordable and courteous. Bob on the other hand is extremely unprofessional. He does not return phone calls, lost our paperwork the first time around and tried to say I didn't send it to him, then he messed our returns up and had to fix them after the tax deadline. He gave no clear instructions and getting any information was like pulling teeth. He also charges more than twice what his son charged us for the previous year. After we asked him what his fee was on APRIL 14th (he didn't disclose this until they were completed) he told us $343. When we mentioned that it was significantly higher than what we paid last year, the response we got was "I had to prepare them as separate the joint now back to separate. If they had been joint to begin with Then it would've been more trivial but I've had this day I've had to change his taxes three damn times give me $250 or take them somewhere else" For reference, his son worked up two sets for us last year to see the difference without complaint. Decided to go back for a second year to get our taxes done with Bob. Last year it was a decent experience with Bob and we got a refund we were happy with as well as not charging too much. This year, we were with Bob for maybe 10 minutes and he gave us the number we were getting back for both state and federal. Both numbers were completely off when we received our refunds and there was a significant amount missing that we either didn't get or he charged us for that number that was missing. I tried reaching out several times to confirm what Bob charged my wife and I and the first attempt the woman said he would call back that day but never did. A week later, tried to call again and he is not available. I have now tried 3 more times and left multiple voicemails and he refuses to return my calls. He does not act or dress very professional and we will never use his services again. PLEASE be careful if you decide to work with Bob. He will take your money and disappear when you have concerns. read more

I took my taxes here to be done in 2017 and I didn't have any issues. I brought them back here in 2018 and the that was a huge mistake! I dropped them off in the beginning of February to be done and about a week and a half later having not heard anything from I called to ask the status of my taxes. No one knew anything. Instead of taking a message and someone promptly calling me back the famous line I got was call back in about a hour. After 3 or 4 calls like this I went in person to their office. This was not a professional office. They finally did my taxes and filed electronically or so I thought. My federal was filed but my state was not! This place was under investigation for filing fraudulent returns. When I called the preparer again questioning whether or not they filed my taxes and they said they did. They said the state refused the electronic file and they had to mail them in. No one ever called to tell me this. They were also on the news two weeks later for fraudulent returns. It's been more than a month and I finally called the Comptroller's office. They told me it's under audit and they could not give me a time frame! I am now at the mercy of the state thanks to this office. I think my 120.00 that they charged to do my return should be refunded. read more

i only give bob "the tax expert" one star because you cant give a minus!! he is a crook he will fudge numbers and never tell you about it...i got audited for the last 3 years, thank god i only used him for 2 of the 3 years!! after being questioned and my money held up last year i decided i would get my taxes done some where else..so 2016 & 2017 i owed because bob trippled my job expenses & non cash donations. and of course he does not give you all the paper work that shows you his work!! i know of 12 people that got audited this year and guess what they all owe $1000. to $6500...he has moved his office & no one answers the phone (mailbox full) ***beware you will get audited*** and bob will be mia!!!!! read more

I was recommended by one of my friends and thought I'll give him a try. He can do taxes, he's an accountant. I'm not to sure about the girls up front. The mixed girl with the blonde wig was very rude, unprofessional and uneducated. She doesn't even sit at a desk. She made an appointment but was rude to me when I got there and waited over 20mins. The other girl was nice but didn't seem like she knew what was going on. After I asked how much longer again, the mixed girl who spoke over the other girl then pointed me to the young lady in the back was very professional and nice but was still occupied doing the other airhead's jobs.
