This is a great museum for kids and teens with lots of interesting themes. Here is a quick review of the current exhibits: - Body Metrics - Go here first! We made the mistake of not finding this until we were almost done for the day. They give you a futuristic headset, heart rate monitor and lanyard to wear around the museum that takes photos and monitors you during each of the the exhibits; then you can review all the data later. It was interesting. I give it a 4 out of 5 stars. -Social Robots - This exhibit was a disappointment to me. It was complicated and the machines weren't capable of much even after lots of work and thought are put into them. One extra point for all the cool decorations and I give this on 2 out of 5 stars. -The Tech Silicon Valley Innovation Gallery - One of my favorite areas and it is right at the top of the escalator on the top floor so you can't miss it. Say "Cheese" for the Reface screen which takes your photo and splits it into 3, then combines it with the faces of the other patrons! Fun to look at and think about. Then have a seat at You Are Everywhere and travel the world from your chair. The imagery is breathtaking. I wish I had this in my bedroom. Three or four other smaller things to do in this area. I give it 4 out of 5 stars. -The Tech Exploration Gallery - 3 out of 5 stars for this exhibit. The Jet Pack chair was fun. You lean back, look up and try to maneuver the chair so that your red laser beam lines up with the lasers on the ceiling as they light up. I got three points, which I am told is quite good :) The shake platform was educational and interesting at the same time. Not much else I enjoyed in this area though. I also enjoyed the infrared camera (SEE PIC) and other miscellaneous things throughout. I was disappointed that about one out of every 8 things we approached had an issue or was not working (computer sketch of your face out of paper, teleprompter for the government speech area not working, etc) I am sure I missed a few things but for our entrance fee of $55 (2 adults and 1 child) we easily got 3-4 hours of interactive, fun, family entertainment and in a learning environment to boot! We didn't try the cafe and the gift shop was small and overpriced (as they always are) but there are plenty of restaurants just outside for you to try. I've been to the Tech Museum in the past for the Body World's exhibit which was awesome. But recently I went for the Star Trek Exhibit which I thought was the opposite of awesome. $25 dollars admission ($22 if you have a student ID) for a walk and stare exhibit that takes about 30-45 minutes. Waste of time and money. There is nothing interactive, and the displays looked really tacky. I have never seen an episode of Star Trek, and this exhibit makes me glad that I never have. So, after they gouge you for admission fees, they gladly gouge you again for pictures. This is a pretty great scam since they do not let you take any pictures while you are in the exhibit, so the only way to have a memento that you were here, is to spend another $32 dollars on the "Captain's Package" for like 3 photos. Boo. Luckily, with the price of admission to the exhibit, you get access to the rest of the museum. But, by then, you might be so bored and tired, that you don't want to waste any more of your time and head straight for the exit. If you decide to be brave and explore the rest of the museum, you aren't in for much. The exhibits are interactive, but for someone with ADD, they could not hold my attention. But, they did make me wish I became a scientist instead of my current profession. Why couldn't my parent's have taken me here when I was 5. My life could have been different. This was my first time at the Tech and it was mainly to see the current Star Wars Exhibit. The exhibit is timed entry so that they let a group in every 15 minutes based on the time on your ticket. The Star Wars portion is in a separate "annex" to the main hall so you need to go down the hall, out the doors, and back in next door. The exhibit was pretty cool where you can come face to face with C-3PO, R2-D2, tower over the Yoda puppet, or dwarfed by the Wookies and see the first and only appearance of the Boba Fett costume. It is a bit pricey at $22 a ticket but if you're a Star Wars fan, it can be an entertaining 2 hours. read more

The last time I was here was many years ago when the "Body Worlds" Exhibit. Boy, that was a long time ago! Fast forward to now, my company had a formal dinner planned for us employees. Located in the lower part of the museum was where the party was being held. It seemed to be about 100+ employees plus guest in attendance. The museum looked unrecognizable! There were a few exhibits for the attendees to enjoy, but they blended in nicely. I took screen shots of my video I took during the event. (sorry for the blurry pics due to Yelp app not able to upload pre-recored videos) Our company hosted a open bar had the The Tech Museum cater our event. I got to sample the following dishes below: - Pork pot stickers - Slow braised pulled pork - Macaroni and cheese - Korean bbq short ribs The short ribs and the slow braised pulled pork were my favorites. Both meats were succulent and tender! The pork was pull apart easy. It paired with the macaroni and cheese nicely, but the mac and cheese was on the dry side. Mashed potatoes and gravy were served with the pork too, but I'm more of a mac and cheese guy. Our company did hire outside entertainment (DJ, Illusionist/Magician, and photo booth), on top of the exhibits accessible to us. If your company is looking for a venue to hold a special event, I would recommend the Tech Museum. We all had a good time, food was great, and the decorations were outstanding! read more

I can't remember the last time I visited the Tech Museum, but my visit yesterday was FUN!!! I brought along my friend's preschooler and 1st grader who had a great time and didn't want to leave. All of the exhibits were hands on and had offered challenges for the young and the old. For example at social robots, kids can easily build robots that can do 5 different functions, for the preschooler they also had decorations for the robots and for older kids they had robot brain activity where you can learn to program your robot to do more advanced functions. We also watched two of their IMAX films, one on Pandas the other on Sharks, the kids loved both films. The IMAX theater will be closed for 4 months starting July 1st as they convert the IMAX theater to digital. read more

Brought my 10 yo on a Monday and experienced low attendance, which was the highlight of our experience. $20 for him, $25 for me...+ $13 for parking. I found the exhibits operationally confusing and when seeking staff, there were none. I'm not science-y but I'd like to explain - signage??why my son should wiggle his arms to increase the cell growth, but I couldn't find info. I'm bummed. Had a great time at a previous visit... perhaps technology could include an app that explains how to operate the exhibit and its implications??!! read more

I visited for the Star Wars exhibit and only expected to be there for no more than one hour (Coulda been). Not only did my boyfriend love the exhibit, he also loved the rest of the museum. I felt like I was babysitting a child, he was running around having so much fun. The Star Wars Exhibit was fairly large. They had several displays of space ships as well as the costumes. I'm not much of a Star Wars fan but I did notice those that were were taking their time... Just like my boyfriend. The best part of the exhibit (in my opinion) is the wet lab. They have a faux lab set up for kids to do a hands on GFP transition into bacteria. I was kinda glad that my boyfriend liked it since it's somewhat similar to what I do for work. Also, they have the cutest little 40L Fermenter! It's aaahhhhdoraaable!!! Their gift shop has a ton of stuff if you're a geek. Tee's to wall decor, rocks to glow in the dark stuff... It woulda been a childhood dream had I been here when I was little. We parked in the parking lot across the street which was a mistake. I thought it was $5 an hour but that was restricted to certain hours. I got charged $20 for 2 hours. read more

Nice idea, poorly executed. A visit begins with distant parking in the convention center, the stairs smell of urine. A walk past very few amenities will get you to the understaffed entrance and eventually inside to what is essentially 3 hours of screen time. The BioLabs and anatomical exhibits are notable exceptions and the basis for the 2 stars here, without which there would be 1 or 0 stars. The Biolab alginate activity was fun, but presented with little context. The anatomical exhibit had a great host, very engaged. The elevators were out of order and there were vast open, unoccupied spaces showing a disengagement by management/leadership. The ambiance reminds me of a BestBuy with empty shelves and little service. Getting coffee afterwards required a walk over to San Jose State University, where stoned, apathetic students stumbled down the sidewalk and bathrooms were scarce read more

Fun place to check out when in town. We spent 4 hours wandering around the exhibits, and I knew the Reboot: Music exhibition was perfect for the bf, who loves to create his own music. It wasn't too crowded for a saturday afternoon, surprisingly, but you could definitely see the whole museum in 20 minutes if you weren't interested in reading or interacting with any of the exhibits. We also watched the Island of Lemurs IMAX movie, which I thoroughly enjoyed despite my prior dislike for lemury primates (I have nightmares about tarsiers, thank goodness they don't live in Madagascar and were not featured in the film). My favorite exhibits were the Laser Harp (seriously, spent 30 minutes total on this one alone) and the Jet Pack simulation (I only got 2 out of 3 of the targets before I ran out of time). The Reface thing was hilarious because it combines elements from your face with other peoples' (we got a glimpse of our future children, the bf and I). There were some empty corners that could've housed another fun interactive display. I think with the amount of space, the museum could definitely have more things to play with. read more

Prices are too high for what we got out of it. And parking garage next to Tech Museum is $1.50 ever 15 min. Okay, so it was interesting but we were kind of bored. I respect the educational aspect behind it but it's missing that certain "something." It seems like there's tons to do but in my opinion, not really. I would like to see more interaction from the staff because for the majority of our visit, we had no idea what to do with many things and not once greeted. We did the ticket combo for entrance and IMAX. We chose to watch, America's Musical Journey. Not something for kids. My 12 yr old kept asking when it would be over but on the flip side, I really enjoyed learning some music history. Lots of good music in the movie. And like Hans Solo for the $45.00 package, I was able to sit in the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon. Woo-hoo! R2D2, Darth Vader, they're all here, just behind glass. And they have weapons galore. This review is mainly for the Body World Exhibition at The Tech Museum of Innovation. This was my first trip to this museum. I was also here for a company holiday party on a Saturday evening in December. Parking was almost impossible around 8pm. I just could not believe that it was such a nightmare to park near the museum. We were stuck in a horrible traffic maze! The Body Exhibition was amazing and pleasantly tasteful. I totally enjoyed the whole display and reading/learning about the fascinating facts of the human body. Highly recommend this for adults; I'm unsure about the early experience and benefit of raw human science to kids. My favorite part of this museum is the chairs where you can sit and rest. The security officers are respectful and polite. Knocked off one star because of the limited bathroom for such a huge museum. Tip: Wear comfortable shoes so the museum visit will be pleasant and not exhausting. read more

Cool place but gosh this place needs help. Escalators and elevators are all down. One kid had to wait for a while to use a freight elevator to get to different floors. No signs to instruct you to get a paper slip indicating your time of entry to the tech studio and the host also didnt know when slips are handed out for specific times. The tablet they gave at the body section didn't work and you had to return it and check out another one yourself. Good butter on the popcorn though... read more

Great time for 6 & 8 year old grandkids! So much to do. They built robots, designed dna, painted virtual masterpieces, had a nice lunch. Topped it off with a fantastic iMax movie. Incredible place! I think this museum is some what boring. I had a family membership from my kid school so it was free yearly membership. I came there on Sunday afternoon and it was empty. My two daughters 5&10 years old did not enjoy must activities in there. You can park in the public parking garage across from it right next to Morton Steakhouse or Scott Seafood Restaurant. I park for 2 hours and was pay $10 for parking. Not worth the price! I was lucky I didn't pay the admission fees to enter the museum otherwise I would ask for a refund. I think the admission fee was $24 each person. Expensive and not worth every penny! There is build a robot room but which was empty, no one was there. We went to the Earthquake felt room, a very boring museum overall. I will not bring them back here unless I have no where to go to since the admission fee is free for us otherwise we would skip this museum in a heart beat! read more

FREE exhibit to "Ingenious Innovations Islamic Science Rediscovered" now thru 2/26/12 doesn't mean it's worth going! Since I was in the area anyways decided to check it out. Had to get a ticket even though it's FREE. Line was a bit long for me, but moved. Gotta go out the building & around the corner where it's showing. Guy scanned my ticket. No photos allowed because if anyone saw it they really wouldn't want to go. Mostly about who invented what & when. Some things for the kids & adults to play with. Not impressed. The Tech Museum has spent the last 5 years redoing all its exhibit space and that massive effort clearly shows. Body Worlds Decoded has an augmented reality feature added on top that really makes this new 10-year exhibit a winner. Body Worlds was last here in The Tech's Parkside Hall in 2011, so some of you may be familiar with the plastination. Last time there was an extra fee, this time a generous donation from a VC partner has this exhibit included in the price of admission. Seriously, go see it. On top of that, there is a maker space, cyber detectives and a social robots space on the bottom floor. All of these are hands on innovation experiences and not a typical museum fare. My favorite part of The Tech was the TheTech for Global Good pods. They explain how TheTech is funding technology around the world to improve the lives of those most in need. It's awe inspiring for the older kids and grown ups while the younger set does some gene splicing on the upper level. Go visit TheTech. You'll love it. read more

Very nice museums and all staff are friendly and they work with a passion. Love the Stanford affiliated lab. The Tech has done a v. good job in keeping everything clean and it's always not over crowded. Children could enjoy exhibits and can learn a lot of things via different exhibits. Discounted Student Ticket with School ID $20 There's a Body Worlds exhibit happening right now.. I've seen Body Worlds before but at the Tech Museum.. they've added a tech aspect to it. Before going into the exhibit, you can hit up the counter for Iris.. they give you a device in exchange for your email address for an added informational feature of the exhibit. Iris was free so, why not.. the person giving it to you, will give you the rundown. They've also added this digital anatomy table. Not for you to touch but someone will do a demo of it and it's pretty neat. Aside from Body Worlds, there was an area for virtual reality and just informative, innovative, areas for today's world. They also have a store, a cafe (there was a vegan option as a special.. nothing on their regular menu), an IMAX theater.. all in one building. read more

They went from 5 stars a few years ago to 2 stars now. Unfortunately all the cool exhibits are gone, replaced by a bunch of touchscreens. On garage floor: Earthquake simulation - gone. Wind turbine and solar collector building - gone. I'm surprised that Jetpack is still open. They will probably replace it with a bunch of monitors and a movie soon. On second floor: Robot drawing face - gone. Robot arranging bricks with your name - gone. There was one more lab in addition to bio lab - that is also gone now. Rollercoaster simulation - gone. Wheelchair racing - gone. They even removed the thermal camera. There are still some cool exhibits left, like the bio lab - petri dish bacteria growth and one where you configure cell division algorithm. None of the new exhibits are anything to write home about. Sad. I won't be returning. Please bring more interactive exhibits, something that you have to build with your hands, not a bunch of touchscreen monitors. read more

Last week I took my out of town sister in law and two nephews to visit the Tech. One of my nephews is very low functioning autistic as well as non verbal. As I was about to complete my purchase on the self-paying kiosk, a woman approached me to see if I needed any assistance. I explained the situation with my nephew. She then guided me to the ticket desk where they proceeded to comp his ticket. I was so grateful that they understood that we may not be able to stay as long as the day, which was the case. Then we went to the IMAX theatre. I knew the walk up to the top would be challenging so we took the elevator, which actually had an attendant inside. I explained the situation and he took us to handicapped seating. As the movie was about to start, the theatre manager came out and gave us headphones for my nephew. What kindness. My recommendation to parents who have kiddos who may have behavioral challenges-go to the first IMAX showing of the day. There were only two other people present so it didn't make us that uncomfortable to be there. Afterwards we were seeing that my nephew was getting tired and overstimulated. We decided to go to the Bodies exhibit. At that time, he was just done and fell to the ground. The two staff members didn't react any differently to what was happening. One of the gentlemen proceeded to come up to me and expressed genuine concern with what was happening. He stated that my nephew could go outside to get some air or go to some cushioned seating nearby. He also recommended some other exhibits that could be of interest. My heart was so full to see how truly inclusive The Tech is and how the staff know how to work around the needs of different children. read more

Took the kids here on Saturday. We parked at the convention center and walking less than a block to the museum. The place was huge, a lot of open space for the kids to run around. I felt like there is way less exhibits now than when I was a kid. Most of the exhibits seem to gear towards 6 years olds and up who can sit and focus on the task . . . . not really a good place for toddlers and preschoolers. I like that the exhibits encourage critical thinking, but I wish they had exhibits for the younger age groups too (babies, toddlers, preschoolers). My 5 years old had a blast while my 2 years old was done with the place within 15 minutes of being there. My 5 years old's favorite exhibits were the earthquake stimulator and the robot building. Their cafe was decent and clean. Food prices were ok for a museum. You order the food at the counter and they will deliver your food to your table. I had an egg salad sandwich and it was huge. All in all, I would take my 5 years old back but not my toddler. I wish they had more exhibits and activity centers, especially with all that open space. I also think having different exhibits for different age groups would be a great idea so that every family member can enjoy their time there. read more

Many fun and interactive exhibits. My favorite was the one about the human body "Bodies in Motion" where you could see how all of the different muscle groups worked, as well, as the lungs, blood, and more. They had plasticized organs of healthy and unhealthy lungs. This is just one of the exhibits. You could book lab activities led by docents, like the build your own robot lab. I love the IMAX theater (best to sit up high) and the choice of movies they have, and icee too. I saw several Imax movies: about how rescue dogs are trained, endangered animals, and bears in the British Columbia Rainforest. The films are absolutely beautifully and smartly made. I felt as if I was right there. Definitely worth it. Try the tomato bisque made at the cafe, and burgers too. If they offer $5 validated parking in the nearby lots, do it. The street parking signs are confusing and I got a ticket which cost more than $5. read more

If you are 12 and older this place is not for you. The name really does it justice. Everything in the museum is interactive - which was a huge turn off during a global pandemic. I didn't feel safe touching anything. We came to see the Rube Goldberg as advertised online and they didn't even have it! Beware: They also only validate $1 dollar for parking. This is a really great museum for children and families, but I found it pretty dull as an adult since most of the museum was interactive exhibits aimed at kids. There's not much history and information as compared to Computer History Museum. The only exhibit I found pretty interesting was Body Worlds. Earthquake simulation is pretty tame compared to other ones I've been on (plus they need to make it safe for kids). Happy to have come through free admission from Bank of America. I did not watch a movie so cannot comment on the cinema experience, but for reference, movie tickets are an extra 11 dollars even if you received free general museum admission. read more

A friend and I attended Geektober (Oktoberfest + Science!) last night and it was so, so, so fun! Geektoberfest partnered with BioCurious to dive into the biology of beer, with tastings from popular regional and national breweries. A huge thank you to Ciara for giving us the opportunity to have this wholesome and exploratory experience with beer! These breweries included: Ale Industries, Black Hammer Brewing, Brew Liberty Beer, Clandestine Brewing, Drake's Brewing Company, Discretion Brewing, Gilman Brewing Company, Gordon Biersch Brewing Company, Lagunitas Brewing Company, Laughing Monk Brewing, North Coast Brewing Company, Pedro Point Brewing, Santa Clara Valley Brewing, Seven Stills Brewery and Distillery, Sierra Nevada, and Umunhum Brewing. J. Lohr also had wine tastings in cute little beaker glasses of their syrah and I forget the other. All three levels of the Tech was available to explore and interact. The ground and lower levels had tables of tastings. BioCurious was tabling interesting demonstrations on the ground level while music and dancing were upbeat and fun with German-Swiss band the Zicke-Zacke band on the lower level. The top-level featured the Body Worlds exhibit and it was such a cool display of plastinated bodies. This event was so very worth the ticket price with the unlimited pours, the large amount of the pours, and the variety that was available to everyone. The energy was good, the organization was solid, and the entertainment factor is 11/10. It is a very special event worth going to over and over again. read more

Had such a wonderful experience the first time with my boyfriend back in October . We read some reviews prior to our viewing and had low expectations. One of them mentioning that taking a light psychedelic would help boost the experience and so we did and oh my did we have a blast ! Id have to say it could be a hit or miss depending on your expectations. My advice is to watch with an open heart. The colors ,the visual to music. We felt everything so intenseLy and could not stop talking about it afterwards and shared it with our friends . I had to make a few changes to my reservation with names and rescheduling . A-OK are my thoughts. A conference I attended had a networking reception here and while it was a good venue for it, I would not recommend going to the museum. There were 2 pretty cool "rides" but the rest of the exhibits didn't seem to work very well, which is kind of important for an interactive museum. Regarding the 2 rides: -The earthquake simulator on the bottom floor was cool. You step onto this platform to experience big earthquakes from the past by mimicking the duration, intensity, pattern. I thought that was pretty cool given I still haven't really felt one in the 7 years I've lived in California. -The other ride (that I didn't get to try b/c the line was intense) was a bird flight simulator. You lay down and put on a 360 headset. By the angle of your arms/hands and if you flap you get to experience what it's like to be a bird flying over the city. There's even a fan blowing some wind in your face to add another dimension and you can look all around. read more

I can't believe that this place's name is about Tech. It had little to nothing in terms of tech. It was all about science than it was about tech. It had a few exhibits that featured tech when the exhibits were paired with science but I found nothing that really amused me. I was just in here the other day when the group I was meeting up with got group tickets to come here. I was nice when I dropped a line on the one board on the third floor exhibit when I said it was informative. Yes, it's exhibits were just that, but it didn't really do a great job. So sorry that the IMAX theatre was closed down for construction - I bet that show is rather neat. Although I couldn't see myself stomaching sitting in the chair to the Jet Pack Simulator, there were other exhibits that I actually did enjoy within the areas of the Body Worlds Decoded, Cyber Detectives and those in the Social Robots exhibits. I felt the Innovations in Health Care needed some work. It's too bland there with "ideas" and all that is a table that seemed like just a way to collect ideas for a more-local health care company in California. I also didn't like the "Tech for Global Good" exhibit because it wasn't really too informative on the idea of tech. Maybe a more techy way of transition of the world of tech would a better presentation of the content you have? It's not really too techy IMHO. I liked the Resonance display too. It was neat to create waves in the display above this "table" that notices hand movement, but again, not really much to look at. There was another that some of the group I was traveling with liked - wiki Sonic, that was interesting, but I couldn't really understand too well. This was a perfect rainy day activity for my 3.5 year old toddler! buying tickets was a breeze at the kiosk, and once we got inside, all of the exhibit were available for him. The staff were all friendly and accommodating especially when the exhibits were crowded there was an organized line and then they let us in accordingly. My son loved the robot showcase as well as the virtual roller coaster! we were there on Martin Luther King Jr. day, which was a holiday for the crowds weren't too bad. The only downside is that there is no dedicated parking for this place so you will have to park at the convention center or on the street if you're lucky. The walk from the convention center is about half a mile each way. after the exhibit, we had lunch at the museum's Café, which was delicious, french fries and chicken nuggets, were a hit with my picky eater son! We will definitely be back here again for a fun indoor adventure! read more

Wow! What an amazing experience in the heart of San Jose! My husband and I had a fantastic time in the museum, and we were so excited for our IMAX movie (The Arctic). We purchased our popcorn and drink, presented our proof of vaccination and our tickets. To my shock, our tickets were not valid! Upon further inspection, we realized I had purchased tickets for the wrong day!!! Immediately, I was pulled from the line by a very friendly lady and she went above and beyond to correct our tickets to the current date, and upgrade our movie to the new Spider Man film! After 10 minutes of working above and beyond, we were all set to see our movie for no extra charge! We were blown away by the customer service and kindness. We will definitely return! read more

I went a bunch of times in my 20-s youth- a lot for the adult booze nIghts they had and always had a blast. I went the other day with my dad who was visiting and hAd sort of mixed thoughts on what the museum as become. On the one hand- about 80% of it is now kid interactive stations- very very similar to the museum of play or the exploratorium. It's incredibly not engaging if you are over the age of 12. The saving grace is that they still have the space/ science room. It's the only displays they have that are interesting to adults. BUT it's great! The earthquake simulator, the good earth screens, all the extraterrestrial stuff. read more
