.New eatery brings African flavours to city for first time…read more Goat pepper soup Strictly for the brave: Tribe Tribe's red-hot goat pepper soup Adventurous Cardiff diners seeking respite from the autumn chill can now head to Canton for a searing bowl of goat pepper soup. Tribe Tribe restaurant is the brainchild of partners Foluso Sotomi and Charlie Hughes. Boasting chefs from Nigeria and Sierra Leone, it operates as a café serving light English meals by day before switching to traditional West African fare as the evening arrives. The aim is to offer something fresh to the area, while delivering authentic meals catering to Cardiff's growing migrant population, which includes students, doctors and university lecturers. Foluso tells me of a customer who used to travel four hours to Manchester to get his culinary fix, as there were so few places getting the food just right. "Now he comes here!" Tribe Tribe opened on September 1 and offers a range of foods common across the West African region. Jollof rice is cooked in a tomato-based sauce and served with chicken, fish, meat or vegetables, while those fancying a stroll further off the beaten track can sample eba and pounded yam. These sticky but tasty carbohydrates are rolled into balls between the fingers and used to soak up bowls of soup or stew. Occasional chef's specials from other parts of the continent are also available, as are African beers. Some dishes are ferociously hot but can be adjusted to suit more delicate palates. This was an experience i will be frequenting.

The name 'The No.1 African Restaurant Café & Bar' is quite a mouthful, but it's also some claim!!…read moreIt's true that there aren't so many African restaurants in Cardiff, (you would think that there would be more considering the long relationship that Cardiff has had with Afro-Carribean culture), but to call yourself number one... well... I guess that's confidence for you! I have only ever eaten here once, and have to admit to being less than adventurous. A friend of mine is keenly into African food, and goes the full nine yards, devouring everything from pigs feet to goat curry, but a lot of the more unusual dishes really don't appeal to me. So, I stuck to chicken and chips whilst she embarked on a gastronomic adventure! There's plenty of options for the less ambitious eater at The No.1 African Restaurant including kebabs, burgers, fish and chips and chicken dishes, and so it's entirely possible to stick to something you know if you don't feel in the mood for taking any risks. My friend opted for the goat meat plate, and conversation ceased the moment it arrived and didn't really spark up again until she had cleaned her plate... I guess she enjoyed it! Christopher, the owner, is originally from the Congo, but serves a mix of different style dishes such as giraffe rice from Nigeria and Fu Fu from... I can't remember... (I was too traumatised by the idea of giraffe rice to be able to absorb any more information!)

Prices may seem a bit more expensive than what can be found on nearby City Road, but what they offer is decently-sized, delicious and generous. They also have a deal available (I think it's a main + carb?) that should be taken advantage of for a filling meal. Though the atmosphere may be daunting at first, the owner is a very lovely and friendly man and will gladly help translate any part of the menu for you.

I personally look forward lunch at Salas whenever i find myself working in Peckham. Portions are generous and fantastic value for money. I would personally suggest a lamb shawarma with a little bit of everything. Just remember to ask for extra napkins! It can get a bit messy... Thank you to all the staff.

The Good Samaritan Who Served Me The Best Ever Street Food…read more For years since 2011 when I moved to nearby Nunhead, I had passed Salas Wraps many times with much not thought to try the menu. More recently I had noted a wonderful feature about Salas Food Truck in the most informative publication The Peckham Peculiar, and was now determined to give Salas a try. On 4th September between 10.32 and 10.38hrs I somehow managed to lose all bank and travel cards, with just £4 left in cash I managed to buy Milk and fruit essentials, desperate for a small cigar I had mislaid my matches, in vain I walked from Morrisons & up Rye Lane searching for anyone that could lend me a light, finally I stopped by at the food truck and asked Salas if he could spare a light, and sure enough I was able to calm my slightly frayed nerves. I then mentioned to Salas about the loss of my cards, that I had spent all my change but was determined to try out the menu quite soon. Then without any prompting Salas turned to me and said 'Would you like to try a Chicken Wrap with all the extras?' completely blown away and gratefully accepted I just could not get over such a lovely selfless gesture. I enjoyed watching the preparation and assumed the mass of chicken pieces being cooked were for several orders, but no it was for me, presented with the signature Shawarma, tender pieces of succulent chicken dressed in mouth watering spices and some salad, this was a massive wrap and for £5 ( when charged ) I have never had a more tasty delicious wrap in all my sixty years, by comparison to other wraps this was at least two thirds more in volume, often at festivals and food markets I have been charged anything up to £9. When leaving I thanked Salas with an this assurance: 'On my next visit rest assured I will repay you for the wrap' then without hesitation Salas replied 'No this is on me.' Well Salas you so made my day, thank-you for being such a lovely Samaritan, you are a real gentleman with a very generous heart. In excited anticipation I can't wait to try the rest of the menu, EVERY dish excites my imagination. So if you know this food truck and have always done the 'walk on by' next time stop and order something from the menu, you will be blown away and never look back. Salas Wraps you deserve far more recognition.
