I'd initially been interested in a home/water birth but my husband wasn't on board since this would be our first baby. I knew i didn't want a hospital birth, it all just seemed so sterile and mechanized plus i've never been a fan of actual hospital facilities, they always invoked feelings of despair in me. So i started looking to see if there was a happy medium. Initially i'd learned about birth centers from Instagram but since i'd recently moved to MN i wasn't sure there were any around me. A few more months into my pregnancy, i decided to look up birth centers on Yelp (as a new resident, Yelp was my lifeline to finding anything in Minneapolis). Roots Birth Center came up but it said "unclaimed" so i figured it probably didn't exist or used to exist but had been closed down. By then i was having hip issues (around 36 week) so i went to a chiropractor and while getting adjusted she asked where i'd be delivering. I told her we were currently registered at Mercy Mother and Child but i'd have preferred a birthing center since i really wanted a water birth. She then mentioned Roots and told me she'd heard really good things about it and i just knew that was my confirmation!!! I googled Roots, found the address and Hubby and i scheduled an appointment. Luckily they were able to take me on as i think the cutoff for admission was 37 weeks (the universe works in amazing ways). We were thrilled to find out Roots was covered by our insurance too; we registered for classes - childbirthing, cloth diapering, breastfeeding/lactation, classes for partners/support people etc (which were tremendously cheaper than Amma). We got a tour, so i got to check out where i'd be delivering, all hubby's questions were answered and he felt reassured that we had nothing to worry about (plus Roots collaborates with North Memorial Hospital which was like 10mins away should there be a need to transfer to a hospital - which ended up being our case). My widwives got to know me personally, we felt so comfy and at home during check ups, met other couples and bonded during classes. My delivery story is one for the books lol. Water broke, we came into Roots and i started laboring in the water (100% recommend for anyone on the fence about water births, contractions are a lot more tolerable in the water); unfortunately my lil guy was quite comfy in the belly and i wasn't dilating much. My midwife and doula were tremendous in keeping me comfy and trying different approaches, i walked, did stairs, bounced on the medicine ball, tried different positions etc. Eventually labor started to progress but still not dilating much but then baby's heart rate started to drop and after about 10mins my midwife thought it best to call for an ambulance. Ambulance came, we got in and headed to the hospital; My midwife and doula met us as the hospital, informed the doctor of my birth plans and were with me throughout till my little guy arrived. My widwife was actually the one who came up with using the towel tug o war method to help me deliver after everything else had failed and the doctors were pushing for an epidural (which i didn't want). After 40+ hours of labor, i was overjoyed to be holding our baby and blessed to have been able to do it as i'd planned in my birth plan, with a few tweaks here and there lol; all thanks to my midwives and doula who were my advocates and backed up everything my husband and i asked for. Second baby is on the way and you already know which birthing center we'll be going back to!

I…read moreactually called her a little prematurely--when I wasn't quite in active labor but right on the cusp--and she handled everything with such calm professionalism, knowledge, and skill. She knew exactly what to do at every moment and truly gave me the birth experience I wanted at home. She came highly recommended to me, and I can't recommend her enough to others. I could go on and on but I'll save you the hassle - if you're looking for a home birth midwife, look no further!

Throughout my pregnancy, she provided prenatal care, helping me with everything from acid reflux and sleeplessness to setting up ultrasound appointments. Her experience, friendliness and professionalism assured me I'd made the right choice for my baby and me. The woman who helps guide the insurance claim(s) is amazing. My insurance company dragged their feet at first, and she spent the time on the phone fixing the problems. Everything was resolved in the end. I highly recommend Aly for anyone wanting a home birth!

If you have a concern they really take the time to talk about it, and explain how things work. Ive heard bad stories of IUD placements, mine went so well and smooth. She walked me through what she was doing, offered/and did stop or wait when I asked. By far the best team and people EVER, I couldn't be happier!!!

Earplugs definitely help...! People are generally friendly, which is good, because one persons space is everyone's space, so to speak. It's a very integrated community! Pretty decent food with a menu to accommodate most everyone's dietary needs and restrictions. Just enough seating to accommodate everyone AND encourage a bit of social interaction. By giving notice of your departure time ,destination, and return time/date, most residents have he free some to leave and move about the city at their leisure.

My daughter lived here two times, each time for 8 months. She made friends with other residents…read more She had several roommates (not all at once), and she keeps in contact with a couple of them. She was able to change roommates when she had an incompatible one. The staff were wonderful with her. They genuinely cared for her, set appropriate limits consistent with her behaviors, and spent much time with her (although it was never enough from her point of view). She received timely treatment plans, excellent life coaching, and constructive behavioral feedback. She benefited from the nurses' advice when she was worried about a symptom she was experiencing. Once, a nurse attended a doctor appointment with my daughter to advocate for her. My daughter did not care for the food at Andrew, but she didn't like my cooking, either. She prefers restaurant food, which can be chosen from a menu at meal time. I was never concerned that my daughter was not being cared for. I talked with her every day and spent time with her frequently, so I knew what was going on. Lots of residents live there; that was the main thing my daughter complained about. She was "one of many" and wanted to be the center of attention.

I…read morealways wanted a more natural birth and didn't know what was possible until I found the MN Birth Center. Every appointment leading up to the birth of my little one was awesome. Each appointment the midwives made sure to answer all my questions and I never felt rushed. My birth and labor were really long due to baby's position and I know if I had been at a hospital I would have ended up with drugs and a c-section which is not at all what I wanted. But the midwives and nurses were there the whole time helping me through it at the birth center and on the phone when I was at home. Even though giving birth in a pandemic is not what I expected. I am so thankful for the MN Birth Center for the opportunity to give birth how as close as how I wanted to during such crazy times.

They helped me do just that! I ran into red tape on every direction due to a false positive turners syndrome on blood test screening. I did not want to undergo amniocentesis due to risks and wanted a water birth as I had experienced previously with my first baby. My care was dropped by Health Foundations Birth Center at 34 weeks pregnant but I was able to continue with the amazing staff at the MN Birth Center and have the birth experience I had been hoping for! Prior to taking these classes I tried to fill out a birth plan that I found online, but did not fully understand most of the terminology. After taking the class, I was able to confidently fill out our birth plan, knowing that it aligned fully with our values and what we wanted for our birth. When we started the Lamaze class we were in the unique situation of taking class right before the stay-at-home order came out. We had our first class in person and the following classes were virtual. Liz was on top of making the class accessible to everyone. Even though it was virtual, class ran seamlessly and she still managed to keep it fun and interesting. Both Liz and Nicole are amazing instructors. They provided a plethora of great information all while making the classes fun and engaging. My husband and I constantly reference back to class saying, "What was that Liz said about...?" Each class flies by, and you can't help but fall in love with them.
