I absolutely loved my experience with North Star Midwifery. Both Kelsi and Aly helped me feel empowered and able in my pregnancy and labour. They listened to my wants, needs and fears and were willing to take the time to address all of them and help me find solutions that helped me achieve the pregnancy I wanted and labour I desired. I loved that every decision we made was with informed consent. They took the time to explain the risks and benefits of different decisions we had to make and then supported whatever decision we ultimately chose. We never felt rushed or judged. They supported my desires for as natural of a pregnancy as I wanted but also supported me when I wanted or needed more modern medicinal support. The care they provided was worth every dime spent. We were hesitant to switch to their care at 30 weeks pregnant because our insurance didn't cover a cent of it and we were already so far along. I am SO glad we made the switch though! Within the first couple prenatal appts I already knew it was well worth the money spent. I would make that same choice over and over again if I had to go back. As a VBAC patient they helped me achieve a labour and delivery that was redemptive and beautiful. In the hospital setting I felt pushed towards a repeat c section and discouraged with the lack of support and lack of evidence based advice we were being given. Aly and Kelsi helped us find evidenced based advice and birthing classes to set us up for success. It was obvious in how they treated me that they believed in me and my body and my ability to have a natural birth. I also had gestational diabetes and felt they never let that hinder me and helped me manage it well. They also did an amazing job helping put my husband at ease. He was opposed to a home birth until we met with Kelsi the first time. They took the time to answer ALL of his questions before we even signed up for their services. They reassured him that my health and baby's health were number one priority and that they would never keep us at home if there was ever any indication that we were at risk. We felt completely safe in their care. I cannot say enough about the support they provided then during labour. They were everything both my husband and I needed. I felt they allowed me and my body to do what it needed to without unneeded intervention, but were also very hands on in supporting me whether through position changes or other forms of coaching. They helped me achieve the natural birth I desired and helped us bring our beautiful baby girl into the world. The postpartum care was also phenomenal. They came to us for the first two weeks so I was able to stay home and recover well while still having medical eyes on me and my baby. As a second time mom that had no postpartum support after my first baby I can say with confidence that the postpartum support is worth it's weight in gold. If we have another child we will absolutely be going with North Star Midwifery again and I recommend them to all my friends and family. read more

The care that I received with Aly is the kind of support and healthcare that every birthing person deserves. Aly is incredibly knowledgeable, skilled, and professional while caring about her patients as individual people. I was treated as more than just a pregnant body and I felt respected as a person who knows my body. I also believe that I was in the best hands if there was an emergency because Aly is so experienced and attentive--I'm sure this is a big reason why she is so highly regarded in the birth community. Aly is attentive, easily reachable, and I knew that she could give or get me any support that I needed. I didn't know this kind of individualized care existed anymore. I felt relief in being able to trust that she would be at my birth, that at this incredibly vulnerable time I would know and have chosen who would support me. That if my labor was going in an unexpected direction, that she knew about my past trauma and knew what is important to me. Every person deserves that dignity. During my first birth (at a hospital), I felt like I had slipped through the cracks and was taking up their time when they needed to care for me. Among other things, I was asked shift change questions while I was having contractions and pushing my baby out. I also had body trauma from a midwife who gave me an aggressive membrane sweep while she was clearly angry with me. I wrote this knowing that while many births aren't like this, I think more women need to share their stories. I was able to rewrite this experience with Aly during  my second birth. I believe that I avoided unwanted interventions because I could trust Aly would take care of me and because I had the time and space to give birth. I was never alone when I needed support and because she was there I felt confident doing what my body wanted. Now I feel powerful and like my body did something incredible instead of like something had happened to me. After the birth, she continued to care for both me and my baby for 6 weeks, visiting at home and checking in regularly to make sure we were doing well and to help us with any resources we needed. When we were exhausted and overwhelmed, and frankly just couldn't take the initiative, she helped us get the support we needed. This is so different from the typical approach where you are mostly alone after your baby is born. This is all to say that Aly gave me the birth experience and care that I had so badly wanted and that I wasn't sure was possible. I'm so grateful and hope that anyone reading this would look to Aly to find the care they deserve. read more

Our home birth was exactly the experience we were hoping for. I got to labor in the comfort of my own home, we didn't have to worry about when to leave, if we would be sent home again, or have to spend any time in the car. I felt safe, comfortable, and unhurried. It was such a straightforward birth compared to our first and I credit the home birth environment for some of that. We trusted our birth team completely, having built a relationship with them from the start and knowing they both came with many years of experience with birth. It was truly a beautiful, affirming, and heartwarming experience to bring our baby into the world in our home, to snuggle for the first time in our own bed, and to have a birth that felt like the most natural, normal thing in the world; just having a baby in our living room. My husband loved the experience so much better than our first that he has become somewhat of a home birth advocate. We both tell everyone who asks that we recommend home birth for anyone looking for a safe, straightforward, comfortable, and empowering birth without unnecessary interventions and arbitrary policies. After having our first baby at a local birth center, we decided to have our second baby at home. Aly and North Star Midwifery were recommended to us first by a coworker but then by friends and local birth workers. After receiving all of our prenatal care with Aly, our second baby was born at home in the water at the end of April this year.
