Whenever I travel, I make a point of scheduling daily workouts to balance out my increased food intake- my recent trip to Boston was no exception. Booked a class online for this studio, first class was free. Arrived about a half hour before start time and staff were helpful, location is clean- I really like the welcoming, body positive atmosphere here. There are little notes and signage up about mental health awareness and eating disorders, and the class instructor made a point of emphasizing both correct form and incorporating the theme of confidence, which was cool. The workout was pretty solid. I do dislike that the bikes used in this studio are very basic and do not come equipped with any sort of tracker for distance or resistance. Also, both riders on either side of me had difficulty with setup because bike seats kept sliding despite adjustments. The instructor was friendly and the playlist was good, bike shoes are provided, would work out here again. Small location gets congested transitioning between classes, with no real area for changing clothes- bathroom has 2 stalls and 3 showers, little room to move around elsewhere, so plan ahead.

So I've taken plenty of spin classes in my day, but never at a boutique studio before! I'm a die hard Orangetheory gal and have been for almost 2 years, so I hadn't tried anything new in a while when I signed up for a class for charity at the Handle Bar. I LOVED it. Honestly-it felt like a club. The music was excellent, the lighting was captivating, and the coach was motivating and friendly! All of the spin classes I had taken before were at gyms, so basically you just adjust the resistance when the coach tells you to and maybe take your butt out of the seat a few times. This was not like that- all sorts of movement, crunches, and even a weight involved! Honestly I had no idea what I was doing but wasn't too embarrassed because it was too dark for anyone to see. I definitely plan on coming back! This class inspired me to take a class at handle bar and other fitness studios twice a month to switch it up from my usual routine. Thanks handle bar!

Great workout, amazing instructor. Only complaint is the space is very small and you're not provided your metrics from your ride.

Everyone has been incredibly welcoming and the studio is clean. I've only been going for a few weeks now, but it's become one of my favorite parts of my week. While Sundays and mornings are not my favorite combination, Emma is energetic enough to make it so fun while getting in a good workout. I haven't had a bad class or a bad instructor and I can't recommend these spin classes enough!!

I knew I needed someone to tell me what to do at a workout, or I won't have the motivation to show up at all. I was introduced to CycleBar and they offered a free class for first timers so I went with my friend! I was absolutely hooked! I think it's my 5th month now and after trying out several instructors, I found my personal favorites! I highly recommend Britt, Nicole, and Leah, and Ali! I love that every instructor has their own style and they are so encouraging in class. The space is always clean and they have free shoes to use! There's also a water bubbler, and towels for use at the studio. After taking classes at CycleBar, I tried other spin classes around Boston. They were fun but I love how CycleBar sends you your stats after every class, which most studios (if not all) don't. This motivates me to push harder and try to improve from my previous classes. Parking is also free (if parked under 3 hours) in the garage, which is a HUGE plus for me.

Compared to other spin studios, Charlestown Cycling Club lets you breathe. I've done 2 or 3 classes…read morehere. + The bikes seem less cramped in the room, the ceilings are high, the music is loud but I never felt the need to have earplugs in. + The instructors are all athletic, energetic and nice. - If you're early, you'll have to wait outside since they usually don't open up until about 10 minutes before class. - Other studios provide cycling shoes as part of the class price, but these are $3 extra, so I typically just use my running shoes and not clip in. - They don't have lockers but just cubbies, I believe. Depends if you're comfortable with that while you're in a 45-60 min class. - I love everything about this place except the location. It's a little hard to get to for those who don't own cars but the area itself is in beautiful Charlestown, by a park.

What I really liked is I overheard them asking about the new person that was coming to the studio. It's great that they're always ready to greet new folks to make sure they feel comfortable. As soon as I let them know it was me, they were super helpful in letting me know where everything was. I've read a previous review that compared this place to other studios like SoulCycle, Turnstyle, B/Spoke, etc. I don't think it's a fair comparison because this place is very different. I didn't think I'd like the bright space, but I actually didn't mind it. That alone made me know that this was going to be different. The group was also a bit different than the other studios, and that's ok! The music wasn't really my forte, but I really liked the community that was there. I was told that most folks are from the Charlestown area, so it was fun to be invited into that community. There were folks that were new to cycling there. I wouldn't have noticed because the environment was so friendly and welcoming. I do plan to be back. It was exactly what I needed for a low-key Saturday AM.

Lots of class options at different times and a good variety of music and themed classes. The coach (Alexander) was great. The workout was well-structured and had a lot of options to modify and challenge yourself during the workout. The inside of the gym was clean and they have complimentary shoe rentals that you can wear if you don't have your own cycling shoes. I really appreciated this, unlike other cycling places that charge ridiculous fees for them. I loved that there were smaller class sizes (like 20 people) compared to other cycling classes I have been to that cram 40-50 into the room. The smaller class helped me feel more connected and present. The instructor can actually see everyone in the room too, so it helps feel more friendly in my opinion. I really enjoyed my experience here and would come back to Handle Bar over other cycling classes in the area. They also have discounts on classes and memberships for students, teachers, medical workers, and military, which is a great perk too!

Definitely a fantastic cardio option in Fenway! My first class was a Sunday morning class, and along with the sensory experience of the music and the light changes, the energy of the instructor and the class goers was CRAZY - definitely woke me up! I was surprised at how full the studio was (only 3 empty bikes). The 45 min class is choreo style, meaning you have a leading leg, ride to the beat of the music, and there's movements (e.g. 4 corners, tap backs), with about 5 minutes of arms using a weighted bar (it seems like everyone has the same bar) and stretching that begins 1.5 min until the end. The bikes don't have a monitor on it, nor a numeric number for resistance, so you follow the instructor's cues for how many turns to add on / go by feel. Pros: - Some of the most hype instructors I've seen recently! A++++ - The studio provides the cycling shoes! A++++ - Every bike has a towel on it! - Riders don't have to wipe down their equipment after (I think the staff does this), so it makes it easier to leave the studio. - Water fountain, ear plugs, hair ties, bobby pins, etc available Cons (minor): - For first-timers, it was hard to flag down a staff to help with setting up the bike because the studio was so packed and busy. - The studio is sort of small - the bikes are very much packed against each other and the hallway where people change their shoes and put stuff into lockers is narrow and gets very crowded. - Only two classes on Saturday and Sunday. Note: masks optional but vaccination required, so ride at your own risk

There was, however, the most equipment I had to get for the Sculpt class that I've ever had to get (a resistance band, ankle weights, a mat cover, a towel, and 2 sets of light and medium weights) which took up a lot of space. The class was also totally full on Sunday morning, so the room felt rather cramped. As a taller person, I had to stagger when extending my arms, and the mats were a bit short for me, so part of my body was off the mat, encroaching another row. The exercises were great, and I really liked the class overall, the energy, and the instructor, but the space was too crowded, and it might be nice to simplify the amount of equipment needed or not have to switch so much between putting on/taking off the equipment.
