Our customer experience was okay at all these stores, but it was best at the Barn. The Barn's sales help was very knowledgeable. Without pushing anything on us the salesman assessed our needs and helped narrow down the offerings so that we could make a good decision. That was a big help, as we would otherwise be overwhelmed by all the variety (they offer pretty much all the brands -- dozens of brands, actually -- GE was the only big brand that I noticed they don't carry). They said they'd be happy to order a model that they don't stock. So unless you want a GE appliance, they can pretty much get whatever you want. The price was good. Without my asking, the salesman checked the price offered by the big box stores (Lowes and Best Buy) and matched it. That nice touch was part of of what made my sales experience well beyond what I've found at the competing family-owned store in Iowa City, where I have also shopped over the years. Delivery to Iowa City was fine. Service is offered by this store. While our new appliances have not yet needed repair, my elderly mother-in-law's one-year-old washer did break, and the Barn was determined to help, sending first one repairman to Iowa City to check it out, and then later another with the required part. Her small problem was fixed and she was happy. The showroom has recently moved to a new building, located in town at the intersection of Hwy 1 and B Ave. As I write this, Yelp has not yet updated the address. The old location, on Hwy 1 south of town, is now a warehouse, and we actually visited it with the salesman -- we made this short drive, in the middle of our sales visit, because a model we wanted to see was not on display in the showroom. The salesman unboxed it in the warehouse, plugged it in, and let us try it out. I appreciated that he took the time and trouble to do that, even when the store was busy with other customers on a Saturday morning. The new store also has a mattress showroom, but I did not check it out.

Instead of being greeted by a salesperson, you are greeted by an island of half a dozen people or more with computers and headphones. It is very sad to see such a wonderful place disappear. The person who helped me went out of her way; I needed some air filters for a Miele vacuum, which they sell. She managed to find a stash in service and eventually figured out how to correctly enter the sale into what seemed like an overly complicated inventory system. A sad day for Kalona -- one more piece of humanity disappeared. I'll never go back.
