I'd heard that there were plenty of restaurants to choose from along Piper St & there were, but a bakery, the Little Swallow Cafe & one other eatery were the only places open on a Monday morning. So we found ourselves at the Little Swallow Cafe. It's a lovely little cafe, with a good breakfast / brunch menu. Not so many options that you feel overwhelmed by the menu but still plenty to choose from. Both of us were very happy with how our eggs were done, & we shared a sourdough toasty, yummy all round. I enjoyed my coffee & although my husband grumbled about the "girly" cup his tea was served in, I thought the mixed cup & saucer (local op shop finds I guess) served on a pretty little tray were a nice touch! Overall a recommend cafe for breakfast or a coffee to go.

Staff were ever so friendly and were able to help with taste profiles so that it would pair well with making a Camembert toastie! WOW. What a gem. I…read moreread about an amazing sourdough bakery in Trentham, so decided to try Red Beard on the way home from Daylesford (about a 20 min drive). What a great decision. The sourdough is fantastic - certified organic and baked in a wood fired oven - tasted unlike any I had tried before. I went home with the Blonde (described as a 'crusty Vienna load who'll go home with anyone') and the most perfect fruit bun. Next time, I'll be the Redhead (the traditional tin loaf) and the pumpkin thatch (and maybe more fruit buns). Loaves are around $6 to $8. Breakfast at Red Beard is delicious. We had the best Eggs Benedict that we've ever had - beautifully buttered sourdough topped with amazing ham, perfectly poached eggs and a thin but creamy hollandaise. Bliss. Nice coffee too. Beautiful courtyard outside for a relaxing summer's day. Oh, and the cakes looked divine (e.g. rich vanilla slice, beesting, dense & rich carrot cake). If you're keen, you can also book in for a guided tour or baking workshop (the latter comes with a bottomless coffee, food, a bag of organic flour and your own creations). I was craving a proper coffee and with a little Internet ninja prowess somehow happened upon legend of Buffalo Girls. Driving down Duke Street we thought perhaps it had closed as no visible signs were around in this residential street. Sure enough, a few hundred meters down a gravel lane and behind a store called Lark, a door ajar led us to this coffee house. It's stripped back. A historic warehouse with ample seating, Vigen's tools of his trade up front and a central high-table for communal coffee drinking or, as the bags laid out tell the tale of a group stamping and bagging session for the beans he roasts in Kensington for Buffalo Soldier (his wholesale side of the business. It's the bean end of the business). It's a family affair here and afar, with most of the beans being sourced from his family's farms in Africa. Make no mistake, Vigen knows he's good (and backs it up with a coffee that is as good as you hope) but knows his limits and while great things are happening for this coffee roaster don't expect him to be in every cafe any time soon. Buffalo Soldier is about maintain quality over quantity. He's the kind of guy who is the eyes and ears of Daylesford. He knew exactly where to direct us for dinner and when it came time to select a bag of beans to take home, I'd initially chosen his Kenyan blend before he stopped and asked me, "Do you want something completely different to what you've tasted before?" and with a nod he started pouring a Rwandan roast into a bag for us. It was raining today and I felt like it was a nice summer day. Having worked for large, well known hospitality venues, the staff (including the kitchen) were incredible and first class. They knew the menu back to front, were extremely helpful in providing the right options for dietary requirements and constantly checked in with us despite full tables everywhere. Whilst we were waiting for food, out came all these "tasters" which were simply delicious. We were enjoying ourselves so much, we didn't even realise that we had waited a while for food. THEY CAME AND TOLD US, offering us a free drink each. They are too nice. And I haven't even started on our meals (which were great!!!!) If you run a restaurant, have a meal here and learn!!!!
