I love improvisational theater, and having spent the last 20 years in the cultural wasteland of Silicon Valley, I was eager to experience all the theater my new home in B'ham has to offer. What a fun night at the Upfront! It was a poet/improv evening, and the creativity was off the hook. We arrived a little early and got up front parking, great seats and there was even a half decent choice of beers and wines to enjoy during the show. Definitely worth the $5.00 admission charge. We chose the "Tarnation' western performance. Kind of corny but had some occasional funny entertaining moments. I liked the night club" type setting, You can drink your favorite beverage while enjoying the performance. Most of the audience seemed to enjoy the show...I am just not much into "improv." Reallllly not funny at all.. The theme was pirates at 10 PM on a Saturday so I thought they would put in a little effort. The improv show was cringey and almost painful to watch. It was almost like they gave up in the middle of the show and it came off very forced. I tried so hard not to fall asleep. I took my husband here for his birthday it was our first time there. the theater is small but it's got a cozy feeling to it. so they ended up starting after ten because they were trying to get more people to the theater I guess cause there were only like 15 of us that night on a Friday not sure if that's normal or not. we did the improv roulette which I guess is a new show and I thought the cast did amazing tonight. it was entertaining. I was worried cause I heard it can be a miss sometimes but we didn't have that issue. so the show was supposed to be from 10-11:30pm. so like I said they started after ten and it ended at 11pm. so it was only like about 50 mins maybe a little less instead of the hour and a half it says it will be. not sure they should advertise it to be an hr and a half if it's not going to be. I noticed the show before us ended early as well. I mean you can't beat the price but it took us longer to drive there to see the show then the show lasted. otherwise it was good and the staff was friendly. read more

I am just as surprised that there is only ONE review for Upfront! It was established in 2004 by Ryan Stiles. This is a great place to go as a group or just you and your significant other. It is very clean and open inside, each table is candle lit and seats up to four but you can move the chairs around if you have more friends. The photos on the walls are of well-known comedians and are a great touch to the atmosphere. They have a snack bar in front and also serve beer! And you never know when Ryan may stop by and make a guest appearance. Not such a great place for kids because of the adult content and just the fact that you kids will disturb the actors and audience with their whining to go to the bathroom every 15 minutes. Make Thursday your new date night because they have discounted shows! I go here every weekend, it's one of the best places for minors (under 21) to hang out. The venue is always clean, the workers and volunteers are are always nice and helpful and it's super affordable ($10 or less depending on the day and time). They serve drinks also for those 21 and older. Sometimes the jokes are inappropriate for people under high school age, the comedians usually scan the audience and perform accordingly but the 10 show is always somewhat explicit. You can also sign up to volunteer to see shows for free. I would recommend this place to everyone. read more

My friends and I went to the 9/24/11 show "hodgepodge" and it was friggin' hillarious!!! It was the first improv show I've ever seen so I was warned ahead of time that it was either going to be great, or it was going to be really bad. As luck had it, it was the best!! I was laughing so hard, my eye makeup was smudging. That's the sign of a really great show. Good job, improv actors!! read more

The Upfront is my go-to for good, clean, CHEAP entertainment in Bellingham. How can you beat $4 for an hour of comedy? You can't. Of course, improv is always hit or miss. This review is just for the Improv, which I think is mostly what they do here. This was just okay for me. The venue is great, and in a great part of Bellingham. Little cocktail tables instead of rows of chairs was a pleasant surprise. Shockingly reasonable drink prices. I'd love to see a different kind of show here, but I don't know that I'd be back for another improv show. Maybe we caught them on a bad night. The show was in three groups of two, and a lot of the players really seemed to struggle with the format. Only one of the pairs was really funny at all, the other groups were... struggling. You could see the wheels turning, the grasping for ideas-- and not finding them. I get that it's hard, and that part isn't really my major complaint. My major complaint is that I was out on a Saturday night, in a room full of adults drinking beer and wine. Why was the content of this night so CLEAN?? Gimme a break. Swear, be dirty, get mean, have fun, shock me a little. Don't request suggestions from the audience that are "appropriate, please." In a room full of adults out on a night like this, everything is appropriate. It felt like a church group does improv. I was looking for something a little more adult. This place needs to dirty up their act! lol. read more

It was ok. My biggest problem was how fake Ryan Stiles was around people. He's the professional actor, you think he could of mustered up some more enthusiasm. The improve itself, it's improve: either you like it or you don't. read more

I love going to the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly shows on Thursday nights. each performance is unique and worth while. True, with any live improv comedy act, there area few that will be duds, but they are like pizza, when they are bad they are still pretty good. There have been far more times when I was laughing so hard I could not hear the act continuing for even see straight. I recommend this to my friends when looking for a date idea or just something fun to do in the evening. The show is definitely worth the price of admission. They also sell snacks and have several beers and wines to choose from and enjoy during the show. All around a great establishment, that is family friendly, hilarious, and a good time. read more

The shows are ok, but can be a little hit and miss. Ironically, their amateur/ "student" group is actually a lot fresher and funnier than the main cast most of the time. Their main cast seems to do the same old tired shtick over and over. read more
