First of all, this place is always closed on my days off (Sundays and Mondays). I finally made it in and tried their aged beef burger and was not disappointed. The burger was so thick and juicy and cooked a perfect medium. The beef is cut and aged in-house. Every menu item is fresh and made in-house as well. I also purchased a free-range chicken breast marinated in lemon and rosemary for Easter, and it was the most delicious piece of chicken I've ever tasted. It was tender and juicy. I'm not wasting any time giving this spot its due praise.  If you aren't in need of full table service and a nice little quiet ambience or whatever this is your spot.  You order at the counter and luckily when I came it wasn't too busy.  Most customers seem to be grabbing butcher options to-go.  The lunch order came out quick and there was ample seating to quickly eat a weekday lunch. But 5 the star rating because of the pastrami sandwich.  Salt bomb, check, crispy fried bread, check, crispy parts of pastrami, check, gooey cheesy cabbage, check, and yes a little greasy but delicious.  The coleslaw was crunchy and lightly dressed with apple strands and peppers and all kinds of stuff. Medical visits in the area have taken me deeper into Modesto than I typically go. I cruised by the Village Butcher twice, noting it each time. The third time was the charm because my visit was late enough this time to stop in for lunch. The meat was beautiful! We weren't there for that, but I really wanted to buy the sausageI wanted to grab a dry-aged steak to grill. The potsticker sausage kept calling me in particular. I imagine it has all the things in it that make potstickers addictive, but more versatility. Hmmm... We opted to try all cold sandwiches. The chicken salad (with celery, green apple, and red grapes on sourdough), the roast beef (horseradish sauce, pickles, and cheddar on an Italian roll), and the club (the usual with white cheddar and herb aioli). All three were delish. I personally could have done without the pickles or the aioli, but my dining companion really loved both. It took a minute, but they were worth the wait. While I was whiling away the minutes, I saw two of the Santa Maria Trip Tip come out and I had some real sandwich envy. If we had bee dining in versus doing takeout, that would have been the way to go for sure. We had iced tea, but the selection of local beers was really tempting. On a weekend, that would definitely be the way to go. They also offer something you don't ofter see in the store anymore, specifically fresh rendered lard & beef tallow. They were both in the cold case, which to me means super fresh. If those aren't your speed, there also fresh beef broth/stock. And, if red meat is out of the question, they have some great bbq sauces and homemade pickles. They also offer a few other things, like a butcher's box program (a monthly subscription box that features a variety of products from the shop that highlights local and seasonal specials at a discount), take out, and dog food. All great options for busy people. Something else to note, they seemed to know almost all the customers who popped in while I was there. Nice! The BBQ sauces and seafood/meat options intrigued me, so I think I will bring a cooler next time I am in the area and provision up. On the practical side, the shop is clean and bright. the staff is friendly, and its easy both to find an to park. It's not cheap, but you can visibly see the quality. Did I mention the meat was beautiful? Definitely pay them a visit if you like clean, fresh food and a place that seems to be a neighborhood staple. It seems like a slice of foodie heaven. TASTY OR WASTEY? Not too sure!!! Came to McHenry village for a nice walk. Stopped by Phillips lighting, just to admire all the gorgeous fixtures....and, to say, hello, to Rosa. Decided to try this place for dinner. I've tried bbq from here, to Texas, STL....to me, it was a bit tasteless. Bbq sauce was not spicy, at all. The garlic fries and ranch dressing were great. The inside of this place is small but enough chairs and tables for the amount of people that go to dine in, at least when I visited. Vibe in there was pretty chill, i think even quiet. The food is just okay and you don't get much meat on the sandwiches. The spicy sauce was NOT spicy. I walked in 30 min to closing and felt rushed to order, but I get it. They were closing soon, it was my first visit and I didn't know what to order. The food was okay but I thought maybe because they were closing soon and the food was out for a while maybe, not sure. They had ran out of the tri trip so I decided to make sure and visit again. Today I went in during lunch hours .. around 12 pm, service was good and not much of a wait. I ordered tri trip sandwich with one spicy bbq sauce and one regular bbq sauce and potato salad. Tri trip was tender, not much flavor to the meat but texture was great. Potato salad I would definitely pass on if I go back, not much seasoning to it and when I think of them I think of cold bland potatoes. Surprisingly the spicy sauce was spicy this time! Fries are fried in tallow making it healthier and tastier and crisper than any fries you will find in Modesto. Service is excellent with helpful and kind staff. The only fresher and better cuts of meat have come from other local farms. I think a lot of the negative reviews are because people forget this place is a local butcher first and Togos second. Yeah, lunch for 2 is 30 bucks these days. Keep in mind I've only bought cuts of meat and their dog food/treat offerings which my dog eats like a meth-head is trying to steal it from her. Their cuts of meat, prices, service, worker attentiveness and obvious knowledge (you can speak directly to the butchers) are top-notch. First off when a customer walks through the door all shop talk needs to stop and the customer needs to be acknowledged. Took a bit for someone to say hello. After the lady with the black hair stopped talking, she treated me as if I was inconveniencing her. Her personality was very abrupt and rude! I asked her if cheese comes on the sandwich and she flat said NO (end of sentence). She didn't follow up with that they offer it but charge extra. I had to ask if I could get cheese? Her demeanor this whole time was very off putting and I really should have just walked out. She rang up the order and didn't ask if I wanted anything to drink. I had to ask her. Took the reviewers advice and not disappointed. Got super tender and flavorful tri tip sandwiches with house made coleslaw served in jam jars (nice touch!). Spotted dry aged osso buco and picked up 3 for father's day dinner. Ease dropping I learned that you can call in to reserve your cuts for the weekend- the meat case was a little picked over at 2pm on Saturday, but still some nice looking meats. Very little brisket on the sandwich. The brisket that was on the sandwich was very cold not even a bit warm. The roll it came on was hard & way too thick to comparison of the lack of meat! Very small side of bbq sauce. Overall: Our first experience was 50/50. I'm going to give them another try. Their Q sauce is tomato based which is fine but not a lot of flavor to it. They were friendly and helpful with picking out our meat. Loved their sausage and pork chops. What a difference. However, they are a little pricey compared to other meat markets/butchers. I'd give it more stars but I use a walker or sometimes a cane, so having help out to the car is paramount and they always have to be asked. Unfortunately most of the time they're too busy with taking phone calls to be bothered. This place is delicious. They have awesome cuts of meats and flavors. We love to do lunch here. Tri tip sandwich or grilled cheese with brisket added is delicious.
