Don't be fooled by the store name. The Wandering Dragon Game Shoppe has much more than just games. It's tucked neatly into the heart of downtown Plainfield. Plenty of parking nearby ( a whole parking lot to the North of the store ). I walked in and immediately greeted by a pleasant employee, Sam. I was surprised at how much this shoppe has! They have paint, for those crafting or school projects with your kiddos, they have UNO card game, and puzzles galore! If you're looking for a game and then don't have it, they can special order it for you. Rooms with large tables to play games with others-sign up online to do that. What a fantastic way to meet someone with similar interests! For a quick gift, they even have Squishmallows-they're so FLUFFY! I know what you're thinking, you don't consider yourself a gamer, no prob., this quaint store is intriguing. Stop in and check it out for yourself. IF you pay cash, they do NOT give change, the balance is in a store credit ONLY (going to look into the legality of that one myself). SOOOO, if you buy a $20 game and give them $50, you do NOT get any change, only a $30 store credit and they do NOT tell you that until AFTER they have your money. No signs anywhere. The staff is rude and uncaring. Try one of the MANY other game shops nearby. Fair Game, Game Storm, Critical Grind, Paper and Plastic. ALL of those will give you better service AND value. This table top game and hobby shop was a pleasant surprise. The fam and I had visited the record store across the street and found this shop unexpectedly. The hubby is more of the table top games enthusiast. We were visiting from California during the holidays. There are rooms with tables and chairs to play games as well as a plethora of table top games for sale. An interesting section in the front had a section of items for sale for bird enthusiasts. There was also a section of cute plushies + various cute items like Pusheen notebooks and other character stationery. Rooms had framed posters or other themed decor like Avengers, Star Wars, Harry Potter and more. One room that was locked and fascinating is an escape room. The hubby and I have visited many table top game stores in Southern California. This one in greater Chicagoland is by far superior and unique to anything we have seen before. Came here hoping to find a cooperative game as a gift for a family who helped me out in a tough spot. Entering the store felt like a wonderland of gaming delight. Thoughtfully broken up into smaller rooms where you felt comfortable and not wrestling with others, or ducking the staff "forcing" their help on you. When I was ready for help I was greeted with a friendly face and she kindly walked around with me pointing out games and describing their plot as I contemplated my choice. The Dragon offers the largest selection of board games in the area. They have a ton of minis too. I love the used game section and that they offer to sell games for you. The prices are a bit high (plus the area has a hefty sales tax). I usually compare their price to Amazon and if the difference is less than 10 dollars I'll buy the item 'local'. The bird stuff in the front seems odd; I think that space would be better used to sell snacks or maybe a space to paint like at a Gamer's Workshop. Two things have kept me from continuing to shop here are that they do not accept cash and they are still requiring masks. I have been going to Paper or Plastic (not far away in Shorewood). read more

If you're anything like me, your first reaction after walking up the stairs to enter The Wandering Dragon will be, "How did I not know about this place?" In fact, one could make a strong argument that it's the best kept secret for gamers of all kind in Plainfield- The only way I event found out about it was because we were looking for a place to play Magic the Gathering at on a day other than Friday, which works better for my friends' schedules... Making this the one time I'm actually thankful they work such weird hours. So, for any place that's in a downtown-y location my first worry is always parking. I used to live in downtown Naperville and I know what a nightmare it can be to need to park on the street. This isn't the case with The Wandering Dragon, as the nearby library on Illinois St. has a huge public parking lot that's within incredibly easy walking distance to the store. Oh, also, another tip- Even though The Wandering Dragon's address is technically on Lockport St, the entrance is actually on the west side of Illinois St. Anyway, I play a LOT of Magic in the Chicago area, and even the best venues typically have some sort of caveat. They might have a great play area, but the storefront for buying Magic cards and accessories is severely lacking. They might have a great storefront, but the play area is totally cramped, too hot/cold, dirty, poorly ventilated (read: smelly), or features bathrooms so filthy your hands feel less clean after washing them in the sink... I could go on. The Wandering Dragon nails it. The play area is great, featuring clean tables, comfortable clean chairs, actual framed posters and art on the wall, a vending machine that sells snacks and soda for reasonable prices, a nice size TV to watch between rounds, and more. Tournament organization is fantastic as well. We played four rounds and the whole thing went incredibly fast. I prefer numbered tables as it makes it friendlier for newbies, but it seems like the player base there knows each other well enough that such formality isn't necessary, at least at the event I attended. Overall, the vibe of The Wandering Dragon couldn't be better. It totally feels like a place that you would actually want to meet friends at to play a board game, card game, or anything else. They've flawlessly managed to bridge that weird gap between nerdy game store and actual cool place to be. It's a hell of a drive for me from Lisle, but I'll definitely be back for more Magic at The Wandering Dragon whenever my schedule allows for it. read more

I really liked the interior of the store. Its a very nicely decorated gaming store. It's got a great variety of family games, more complicated niche board games, tabletop role playing games, and just is the kind of store that makes you want to browse. A little tightly spaced but what game store isn't. I did have an issue with the staff. While checking out, one of the other staff makes a comment about "warhammer people" which was a little off putting. I consider myself a light gamer at best these days but thats kind of a silly comment to make in a gaming store that sells that stuff. The whole point of going to a gaming store is to feel like you're in an accepting environment. I had my son with me who was buying miniatures. While he wasn't old enough to catch the comment, I would have given the staffer on the spot if my son was older and he heard that. It was just a dumb thing to say at a gaming store. read more

I was a return customer to the Wandering Dragon for 2+ years purchasing a few random board games here and there and also for my D&D supplies. Up until tonight I had considered myself a strong advocate for the store and encouraged people to check it out. After tonight, I don't think I ever will again. This evening I was looking for a parking spot in the downtown Plainfield area and entered the public parking lot which was stationed right next to the Wandering Dragon. I was elated when I found one spot squeezed in between a couple of other cars which I pulled into. It was the absolute last spot in the entire parking lot apart from some private parking which was very clearly labeled as such. I enjoyed my night in Plainfield only to come back to an empty spot and a now visible sign (it was blocked by a car which was parked right in front of it prior) saying that it was permit parking and all violators would be towed at the owner's expense. I was very confused as this was connected to a public, free parking lot and all permit parking in else places was clearly displayed on the specific spots. I asked the cashier in the Wandering Dragon what happened as the sign on the back of the building was not clearly visible with a car parked directly in front of it and he informed me that he did not call it in but the owners probably had as they watch the video cameras from their home and call the towing company when they see someone parked in their spots who weren't allowed there. I know I am not the first person, nor will I be the last, who has gotten towed when they did not realize they were in a spot where they were not supposed to be. But when I went to pick up my car from the lot, the attendant who returned my car said I was not the first to complain about the Wandering Dragon's towing policy and he expected more like me tomorrow picking up their cars. This is ridiculous. If you have a permit parking area, that's fine, I respect that. But please have more signage indicating so. One sign on the back of the building which was 4 cars away from where I parked is very obscure. I cannot support a business who doesn't label these things clearly going forward. read more

Edit to the Cross Post on Yelp & Google: After re-speaking with Laura, I decided to give The Wandering Dragon a final chance, and this time, like the first time I was in there, it was one of the best experiences I had at any game shop. Walking into the shop had a pleasant and warm feeling, and this time the associate at the counter was very welcoming and friendly. I spoke with him about honoring the discount that was given to me and without even flinching, he went forward with it with a smile. They have a very nice miniature and paint selection, and they even had the DND Books I was looking for. They also have a beautiful selection of board games as well as deck builders and if you ever go to rent a room in the back but get a little hungry/thirsty they do have a reasonable snack area in the front. I am finally changing my rating of the store from a 1 star to a 5 star! I WILL be returning to this place very soon!!! read more

Threw a wedding shower here, rented a room and visited the escape room (had previously only visited for the escape room a year prior). The experience was wonderful from start to finish! They were quick to answer questions and gracious with the space provided. We had the room 8 hours and had food catered in from Fox's for dinner (they have partners who will cater in, they provided menu's ahead of time upon request) and a cake from Millette's Bakery around the corner which was great. I loved that we were able to support local businesses without breaking the bank. They have snacks and drinks available for purchase in store - because we were throwing a party there they just had any snacks, drinks, or games we wanted on the tab to settle at the end of the night which made the whole day run smoothly. The owners were very kind leading up to and the day of. The escape room was a completely different theme than last year which made it totally worth it for those couple of us who'd been before. We had 8 in the room which was the max which was a lot - I would recommend no more than 6. It was a Saturday day and evening, we were there 7 1/2 hours which flew by. They have multiple bookcases filled with open games for you to pick from. they range from party games to more mature games. I highly recommend Wits & Wagers if you're with a large group. The place was hopping. The room we were in had a door we could close if we wanted which kept it manageable. Even when we were out in the store everyone from employees to other customers were friendly and happy to be there. I would highly recommend this shop for your gaming needs as they carry a variety of new and used games at a fair price. Was looking to purchase a gift for my kid. Tried calling for a week to see if product was in. Not once was the phone answered by a human. After stopping and being told the product comes out next week, I returned the following week. While paying I told the clerk that there should be a free card (a buy a box promo that comes with literally every new set). I directed him to the drawer where they are always kept in a little baggie. He opened the drawer, looked for two seconds, and said they gave them all away as prizes. Hardly seems right that you 'gave away' all the gift with purchase cards before you even offered the product for sale. Then another employee came over and said, we didn't give them away. It's actually inside the box. Which is something new and that I had never heard of. I repeated 'Its inside the box?' He answered yes and I said ok, but I already knew that he was lying. Lo and behold, we open the box and no free promo card. I began calling the number here on yelp. 10 days and of course no answer. I like to support local business but I will no longer support this one. I'll get my stuff cheaper on eBay or TCG. I love this place. It's definitely one of the best suburban gaming stores. A friend of ours is a regular at The Dragon, so we occasionally head down to visit and play. The game selection is AWESOME, whether you're looking to buy or play. They rent out space, or you can play a few dollars to play from their in-house game library. We've been to several small gamer birthday parties here and bought a few games in the process. They've got several gaming rooms to play in, so even if they're busy, there's always space to play and someone to play with. They offer a family-friendly atmosphere, so gamers of all ages can visit the Dragon without concern. If you're into gaming or want to try out some really sweet gamer games, check this place out. Since my original review, The Wandering Dragon has moved 1 block west into a larger location! Everything that was great about the original store is even better. The only downside to the old place was that when the shop was really busy, games that took up a lot of real estate (DnD, X-Wing, etc) would take up a lot of table space. Well the new shop have 6+ private rooms including a really nice VIP room. These rooms have large wooden tables that can expand with leaves or contract to make the space fit your group and allow more people to play without interfering with each other through the noise. The open area is actually a little smaller than in the original shop but because of all the private rooms everything actually ends up feeling more spacious and inviting. Nothing super exciting about this update: the first shop was one of the best board game shops I've ever been to and the new place is even better. The community here is great. Whether you're a long time gaming grognard or someone who doesn't know anything about board game except Monopoly and Jenga, you should check this place out. read more

When I first moved to the area I was looking for a quality FLGS and I was extremely excited when the Dragon opened up. I have always had a great time whenever I have gone there. The new location is just fantastic, tons of room, multiple rooms, beautiful decor and tables, what else can you ask for? The staff is incredibly friendly and they know you by name after a few visits and they always make you feel welcome! I just wish I could go there more often, but working midnights kind of makes that impossible :( I have seen some other reviews where people were complaining about prices, I don't get it. It's not like they're charging more than MSRP. I guess the concepts of "buy where you game" and "support your FLGS" fall on deaf ears these days. So what if you have to pay to play for certain events. Where else are you going to get that type of fun and entertainment for $5? If the people who game there don't support the store then guess what, there will be no store. FLGSes are harder to come by these days. I LOVED THIS PLACE! I really did! So much so that I would actually drive an hour to come here to play every other week! I was constantly trying to get all of my friends to come here, I even brought my 12 y/o brother here because I thought it was an amazing and friendly place. But I can't forgive the way they treated me, and its with heavy heart that I say I will not be returning to the Wandering Dragon ever again... Lets me explain further. I had been coming to the TWD for about 6 months to play in one of their gaming leagues. There are many many other places I could go to, including one a mile from my house, but I choose to come here, because I loved the shop and its owners, or so I thought... Last night, I was the odd man out in the league night, which was fine because I had some store credit saved up, I had just been paid at work, and was excited to buy a new game, or add ons. I had two items in my hand when I was confronted by Kevin and Laura, the owners, who brought me into a private room... I was already on guard because I was running late to the league night (I made it on time anyways), and had called ahead to say so. I had assumed that they didn't appreciate me calling ahead. So I asked them Is everything ok? Did i offend or disrespect someone?" Kevin bluntly stated "you're disrespecting us. You've been coming here for a year and you never buy anything. What's up with that?" The two owners went on and on, tag teaming me, complaining that I don't spend enough money in their store. So here I am, being reamed out for not being buying anything, with their product I intended to purchase literally IN MY HANDS. I tried to explain that I was just looking for something, even raising the items to show them. Kevin then calls me a liar, and that I'm only saying that because I was confronted. They both then boldly stated that "If you want to play here, you need to buy your games here". They had noticed that I had come in with a new item and asked "Where did you get that, because we know you didn't get it here". I responded "It was an anniversary gift from my girlfriend" "Where did she get it?" "I.. I don't know... It was a gift." Well you've been coming here for a year now.." "I've only been playing for about six months..." "Well we can look up the receipts to check!" That's twice now hes called me a liar (a paying customer) to my face. Mind you, I am a paying customer because it is NOT FREE to play at TWD. Every time I have come there for a league night, I have to PAY TO PLAY. If you want to play anything there, it costs 5 bucks a person. And to be honest, I didn't mind that, I thought it was every stores policy. I also live in Oak Park, about 45-60 minutes away from TWD. Driving out there once every 2 weeks for a league night is enough for me. To drive out there for a every single game related purchase seams too much. I make purchases when I can, and HAD bought gaming pieces and add-ons from them before, but they must have completely forgotten or simply wasn't enough to maintain "good customer status" to them. So in the end I bought a board game that I had intended to buy there that night anyways, along with a few other odds and ends and went back to my league night. But now I couldn't enjoy myself. Everything felt weird, and tainted... I felt like s battered child that didn't know if and when his next beating was. I was looking over my shoulder constantly, feeling extremely self conscious, and wondering if I was going to be yelled at again for some other inadvertent offence. The fun was gone, and the only feeling that was left was unsettling. I left the league night early, and don't think I can ever bring myself to return. I was literally bullied into making a purchase... I really loved this place until this happened... I even brought craft beer to everyone in my league, and gave some to Kevin and Laura as a thank you. Long before Wil Wheaton became the sweetheart of the gaming industry, before he invaded our computers with his fancy Geek Chic table and his celebrity friends, geeks were rolling D20's in their basements and slaying trolls. The popularity of table top gaming in the states increases every day, the attendance of conventions such as Gencon and Origins grows yearly. The internet has changed our hobby, creating an accessible format for anyone even remotely interested in gaming, if you're curious about the gaming industry, it's just a Google search away. There was a time when it wasn't as accessible, when you had to track down a game, when you had to enter one of those rare store fronts that were usually hidden in a strip mall and buy a game based on a store recommendation or just because the art on the box was something that peaked your interest. As I've said though, we've come a long way from those days. There are unsung heroes in the gaming industry, the people that take the risk in putting their savings into opening a local gaming store. There's a huge risk involved in opening a gaming store, especially when the internet age has dropped prices and made the retail world harder to gain traction in. Often we talk about the artistry in gaming, the work that has to go into the development, the art and the mechanics but we rarely talk about the work that gets put into the conventions, the tournaments and our favorite stores. To open a store is difficult, to open a store that goes above and beyond normal gaming conventions has to be even that much harder. Which is why I'm writing this review, because those in the Midwest have an opportunity to experience more than just a gaming store. The Wandering Dragon is located in downtown Plainfield, Il, if you weren't paying attention you might even miss it. Though if you're interested in gaming, it's something you don't want to miss. From the outside, it looks like your average brick building, which just happens to have dragons painted on the window and hanging over the front door. I'm sure the question is 'What makes the Dragon different from other local game stores?" It's not something that's easily answered, we have plenty of game stores in the area, especially if your willing to drive a bit to get to them, some of them have even been open for 20 years or more. There's no way to define what the Dragon means to many of us... The Wandering Dragon opened at a smaller location not to far from their current location and had a successful run at business. The Dragon's story starts before their opening though. It start when they first threw up their coming soon sign, I did some research and emailed the owner about their new shop, without knowing anything about me, I received an invitation to visit the shop before they opened. This little shop on the second floor of a building, consisting of only three rooms, helped to create a culture of gaming. They started with shelves full of games and a large room of tables. There was an open invitation to game, bring your friends, grab a game off of their shelf and dig into the rules. Through this small local game store, I was able to grow my gaming collection, I was able to give games a shot before I spent any money on them. It was a great opportunity to be able to preview demo copies and learn more about gaming. Unfortunately, or as it turned out, fortunately the Wandering Dragon was forced to actually wander a bit. It relocated itself, roughly a block away in a larger location. It was at this location where the Wandering Dragon really started to flourish and become so important to the gaming community. Though some of the decisions have been met with mumblings and whispered voices of dissent, but don't worry I'll get to that coming up. The new location completely changed what I expected in a gaming store. There were the usual shelves full of games, RPG's, dice and whatever else you could need to get your geek on but there was something else. Something that wasn't easy to put your finger on. The new location not only housed a large room full of games, but it also had another separate room full of options but that's just the beginning. This place will blow you away. I recently got into Magic with my fiancé, so we started venturing out to game shops to feed our addiction and meet fellow players. The Wandering Dragon exceeded any expectations that I had. First off, this place is huge! There are two main rooms for merchandise, a large open room with tables, men's and women's (!) restrooms, and several private rooms for gaming. I would assume that this place was an office building, and that's perfect for a gaming store. The store is beautiful. Essentially a nerd's paradise. Floor to ceiling shelves are filled with pretty much every board game or card game you can imagine, accessories for said games, and a fairly extensive snack collection. The decor here is not your standard game shop haphazard decor. Posters, banners, and what look like hand-painted signs were thoughtfully placed, and each room has a cohesive theme. My favorite is the room with the Lord of the Rings banners. Also, every room in the store is pretty much immaculately clean. The owners were warm, welcoming, and incredibly helpful. It's obvious that this place is their passion, and that passion has created the most awe-inspiring gaming store that I've ever had the pleasure to visit. The new location (15032 S. Des Plaines Street Plainfield, IL 60544) is in a single story, large, street-level building. The proprietors, Kevin and Laura, have done an incredible job making the store an inviting, spectacularly attractive, family friendly and FUN place. I was previously known to tell my friends that the original Wandering Dragon, was the classiest, cleanest and best game-store I'd ever seen. Well, now there's a new Dragon in town, and it improves on the old location by an order of magnitude. The original was indeed the best I've ever seen... until now. There are 10 or so individual rooms where one may play games; either the demo copies in the store, any one of many pre-arranged events throughout the week, or one's own games. It is a very reasonable $5 to buy a seat at a table (apparently with other options coming for regular paying customers) - and given the superlative environment, amenities, friendliness and great products, it's a completely reasonable and small price to pay for hours of fun. The clientele also helps make the Dragon a great place to game, shop and socialize. Kevin and Laura do a fine job of gently insisting on a family-friendly atmosphere, and nearly every single person who frequents the store is polite, good-natured, and eager to play card, board, miniature and role-playing games with newcomers. They now have a great selection of drinks and snacks to sustain one through hours of gaming. As a side note, they do not allow outside food and drink to be brought in; but given the reasonable prices and selection of snacks in-store, and some agreements with local food establishments to deliver, that shouldn't pose problems for anyone. I really can't overemphasize how inviting and classy the Dragon is. It's like walking into an upscale office, with all the stained wood trim, elegant furnishings and clean glass; but it's all for gamers! I have been very pleased with The Wandering Dragon. They have had games that TopCut did not have and let us try their demos out before we purchase. I have gotten Quarriors, Ascension, Legendary, Outbreak and many more from them this way. Super friendly every time I have come in and it was free to try their demo games if they did not have any events going on. This shop is big on board games, if you are looking for miniatures / tabletop their selection is kinda lacking there. They will get things in if you request though which is super nice. Always have answered my questions and been friendly every time I have come in. I do not really do their events, still kinda shy about it but sometime I want to try out their D & D groups. Been happy with the selection and the friendliness, have been going there since they opened and even after the move. read more

Came here on 6/20/14 with a large group of about 30. Paid a perfectly acceptable $5 fee in order to game for 6 HOURS. That's less than a dollar an hour. Brought our own gaming stuff and settling in for rousing games of D&D, Cthulhu, GoT and other such games. Had we not brought our own, The Wandering Dragon has a large selection of games to play before you even buy. Their merchandise selection is staggering, the decor is beautiful and the owners were so accommodating. They had the patience to put up with a bunch of rowdy gamers. The cherry on top was the binders they have at each table with menus for various restaurants in the area that deliver. Oh, I forgot to mention their many gaming rooms available. After making a $75 dollar purchase, I was asked to leave by the owner of the store for taking a seat that was offered to me by an old friend claiming that there was a $10/head charge to use the side rooms located inside (which was completely ridiculous considering that I had been allowed to use a side room to open magic packs that I had purchased on previous visits with no hassle). Frustrated, I walked to another gaming store to vent; only to find out that my $75 purchase would have been $50 had I gone elsewhere. Not only is there a severe lack of customer service there, but the products are horribly overpriced. I wouldn't enter that business again if someone paid me to. read more

The Wandering Dragon is an absolutely outstanding game store, and by game store I mean board, and pen and paper, NOT video/computer. Old school gaming at it's best. These guys have shelves of great RPG games from D&D to Pathfinder and others. The have gaming leagues like D&D Encounters, Mage Wars, Warmachine, Star Wars X-Wing League. They have a back room that looks like it holds about 40 people or so for different gaming events. My group just started playing Pathfinder there and we were all very impressed, not only with the store, but more importantly the staff. They were extremely accomodating and seem like a great group of people who truly enjoy what they do. If you are looking to give your imagination a boost, or someone else's that doesn't involve electronics, give the Wandering Dragon your patronage. read more

One of the larger show rooms I have ever seen for a gaming store. Plus the store has 8 private gaming rooms and one large common gaming area. Owners are helpful, informed and super friendly. So far haven't found any flaws. This will be my source for all my geek fixes from now on! read more

I just visited their new location this evening - Thursday, September 19th. It seems like it will address the problems that others have noted about a lack of space and handicapped accessibility. Since the new location is on street-level it gives them a lot more space. In this new location there are at least three rooms where 6 to 8 people could sit and play games and one large room where 30 to 50 people could sit and play games. This is in addition to the store area which is quite reasonable in size. Even though the store had not officially reopened yet, Laura was quite accommodating and let us in to make a small purchase because we driven all the way down from Naperville expecting them to be open. While my daughter shopped for D&D paraphernalia, I was given the chaos tour, wandering through boxes all over the floor in the usual situation that you might see in a store that was not quite open yet. It was a lot of fun. They hope to be officially open this weekend. Only one day to go. They have a lot of work to do but I wish them the very best and hope to see them again after they are officially open. Oh, by the way, this new location appears to be directly across the street from the Plainfield Fire Department. That should make it easy to find. read more
