On entering we found a local guy singing Elvis songs to the jukebox with a broom in his hands as a mike stand! We thought the usual - Here's a drunk!, but, no. He asked us very nicely if we had any requests and proceeded to play, and sing, them. After a few drinks it was our turn to request, and sing! By the end of the night, a singing group, booked to play in the nearby hotel had found they had no audience and come into the Ardview to join in! The selection of drinks was excellent considering the problems of getting stocks (apart from malt whiskies, of course!) and we were accepted as part of the family within a very short time. The next day, locals were stopping to talk in the street and say how much they'd enjoyed the night - yet it was down to them! Magical!

I had found out about this place because I was on the Game of Thrones Door tour and they have Door#5. The Door itself is incredible and well worth the visit, but more importantly, this pub is very old school Irish and you will legit feel like you stepped back in time! Terry, the 3rd gen Owens, running it when I came in, was so incredibly gracious to not only share the story behind their door, but shared the amazing family history behind the pub including his grandfather who started it! The building it is in was built in 1852 as well...so if you are a history nerd like me, you will love it for that fact alone! They have a great draught beer selection and I was so happy to grab a very reasonably priced pint and sit in front of the fireplace (yes, they have a fireplace!) on a very chilly Limavady evening and chat w/some of locals. The picture I posted is of the Fanad Head Lighthouse which is just a few hundred yards down the hill and from which the pub gets it's name. It is a small bar with about 6 tables but it has such a nice and cozy feel. Since the seafood is freshly caught daily, the menu can vary but I can say that every dish I've had there was delicious. One of the owners is American, and I was surprised to see JFK Memorabilia in the smaller room. They have antique oil lamps, old firearms and assorted things on display for patrons to muse. They proudly serve Bushmills and even their own brand of Crosskeys Whisky, but I got a gin and tonic and enjoyed the Northern Irish craic that was on full supply on this June day.

5 stars for the Irish music…read more The whiskeys they poured at Peadar O'Donnels were probably the smallest I've had in the UK, and I had plenty of whiskeys during me 3+ weeks traveling there. The sign on the wall, if it was to be believed, made it seem like they were pouring between 18-20ml. Every other bar I had been to either used a 25ml measuring cup or the rare 35ml measuring cup (THE CEILIDH PLACE in Ullapool stands out in my mind as giving out 35ml), but this guy just poured from the bottle into the glass, and indeed it did seem a very wee dram. :) My wife got a beer though, and that was of a normal size. :) If you don't care about the music, I am sure there are plenty of other bars in Derry that can give you a good wee drink.
