I was a little hesitant coming here because great food is just as important to me as great drinks, and the menu was very limited. The menu listed only two mains: a "Charred Oat Burger" and a "Short Rib Toastie" in addition to two salads and four "shareables". I believe there were one or two specials that day as well, one being Steak Frites. But the food reviews were good and the drink reviews were great so I decided to go. Even if I had second thoughts the welcome from Bob the bartender when I entered (first customer when I arrived at 5:00 opening time) seemed so sincere that not staying was out of the question. I took my seat at the bar (supposedly rebuilt with materials from a bar in Ireland that closed). Bob was great, with an enthusiasm for great whiskey that he couldn't hide if he tried, and didn't seem to mind that I'm not enough of a connoisseur to have many opinions of my own. Between other customers that soon filled the place he kept me talking and I'm not much of a talker. About whiskey, where I'm from, Burlington in general, and he gave me some tips on some lesser-known Vermont attractions I didn't know about. Their whiskey collection was large and from many lands. Having just returned from Ireland I was pleased to see several I remember from my visit - not just the usual Jamesons here! I prefer a cocktail to straight whiskey though, so it was Sazeracs tonight. Two specialties. First the Rosemary's Sazerac: Bulleit Rye, rosemary syrup, Peychauds bitters, rinse of Laphroaig, torched rosemary sprig. My second was also a Sazerac: their Irish Sazerac, made with an Irish whiskey and other ingredients which I've forgotten. Both drinks were fantastic, generous with the alcohol, and made with attention to details like properly-sized ice cubes (large) and pre-chilled glasses. For food I got the "Charred Oak Burger." I don't know where the "oak" comes in. The only burger on the menu, it was made with two thin patties, a great quantity of whiskey & honey-glazed pork belly in large pieces, kimchi mayo, and a brioche bun. One of the most interesting burgers I've had in a long time. Even though it was a bit overstuffed more due to the pork belly than the patties I managed to eat it without it falling apart, a common problem with burgers. Instead of the fries it came with I elected to get the roasted Brussels sprouts instead, a special shareable of the day. I don't think I was charged extra even though it was a rather large portion. These were excellent too, sweet and bacony with no bitterness. As it got busier the noise level increased but only moderately. I liked the music playing, a mix of blues and energetic classic rock. Overhearing other conversations I could tell that these were discerning customers who took their whiskey seriously and asked detailed questions before settling on their choice of libation. Just two things on the dessert menu: Chocolate Overload and Caramel Sea Salt Cheesecake. I got the Overload: chocolate cake with Bailey's Irish Cream sauce. Nothing special but I enjoyed it; a nice way to finish the meal. It was big enough that I took about half home, along with half the Brussels sprouts. This is definitely a place I want to come back to. I wish the food menu was more extensive but that burger and sprouts were so good I could see repeating the same menu again, trying new specialty cocktails next time. read more

The inside of this spot is like being transported to the UK and bartender actually told us that the whole interior was imported an old pub from Ireland! So super cozy, with a fire crackling and perfect for a winter escape. The speciality cocktails all sounded delicious but we went with some classics which were prepared wonderfully! The service was friendly but you have to go to the bar to order drinks and food even if you are at a table. They do bring the food over when it is ready. We would suggest the Pork Belly and the Burger. If you love whiskey and coffee the Clockwork Espresso is fantastic. I love love love this setting. Very den-ish, like i was waking into after-dinner smoking room for gentlemen back in the day with leather chairs and a fireplace. It was so cozy. If I had been in front of the fireplace I might have stayed all night. Our server was great as she was also the hostess AND bartender. Poor thing was doing it all on her own but managing very well. We barely had to wait at all for our drinks. My only complaint is that the two drinks we tried were very weak and the menu selection was a bit odd in my opinion. There were a lot of fruity bourbon options and a few non-bourbon selections (which is great for those who don't prefer bourbon). Buutttt, it's called the whiskey room and I could barely taste it in my drink. I was surprised they didn't have any standard menu sections that were more spirit-forward like the vieux carre, old fashioned, Manhattan, sazerac, etc. There were a few variations of these but none of the standards. We were excited to see this bar across the street from Leunig's where we went for dinner. The signs outside mentioned a selection of 250 whiskeys. But in reality it's just a bar. First off, this was the first whiskey-forward bar I've ever been at that doesn't do flights, which is crazy to me. I also stood in silence for several minutes while the bartender chatted with a couple without even acknowledging me at all as I tried to order. They were out of the first whiskey I ordered, and the second bartender didn't seem to really know how to recommend something else, showing me a different random bottle without saying a word at it. All in all this place isn't very welcoming, doesn't seem to be a source of whiskey knowledge, and wants to just be a regular bar. read more

I was basic and he made me a delicious amaretto sour while my husband had a special cocktail and then a neat pour of whiskey. Unfortunately our visit didn't go great. First I'll say that the best thing this place has going for it is the room itself. It's a beautiful spot, very on par for a cocktail bar. But outside of the atmosphere itself, the drinks were pretty terrible. I ordered Bullet over ice and was surprised to see a whiskey bar didn't have large ice cubes. My wife got a whiskey sour, which was a horrible attempt. Tasted simply terrible. Neither times did the bartender ask what kind of whiskey we wanted. We figured maybe whiskey wasn't the bartender's strong suit, and ordered White Russians. I don't think she knew that White Russians are made with cream, not milk. It was essentially a chocolate milk. Isn't this a cocktail bar? These are both three ingredient cocktails. My standards for cocktails are not that high, but this was so miserable. Bartender also was very unpleasant, wouldn't look at people in the eye. Sad. Will look for a better spot next time. Waste of money. read more

First time in the Whiskey room was a lot of fun. I am not a big drinker and especially do not go near the bourbons or whiskeys. I wanted to try something new so I got the Bourbon Bacon drink special which was $10. It wasn't as good as it sounded in the description. I think the bartender must have over poured because the drink was way to strong and the bacon was on the older side and tasted a bit stale. The next drink I got was something I am very familiar with which was a Vodka soda. It was very good and well made. I loved the inside of the Whiskey room. It was like a nice lounge where you can catch up and get a drink with a friend or where you can go on a nice whiskey date. Something I liked about this place was that it was connected with Riras. I am not sure many people like that but I thought it was great! I had a few drinks at the Whiskey Room then went to Riras with my girlfriend to go and dance! Wow. The selection at this place was kind-blowing, with regards to whiskey. They had 20 and 40 year old Glenlivet, Glenfidditch, and Macallan. It was a paradise! They also had Pappy Van Winkle available, which is like finding the holy grail of bourbon, and it is priced as so, at $100/pour. The interior of the bar was just lovely. There was a fireplace that we were lucky enough to sit next to, on a cold night. It has whiskey magazines, and old vintage bottles. They even have a piece of peat moss in the window!
