I gotta say that men are a different breed when it comes to day spas and salons - we want to be pampered but we don't want our "man card" revoked. Sofie and the The Wicked Hair is the answer in Boise, Idaho. After reading an article in the Boise Weekly about the new downtown establishment and their Body Sugaring technique I called. In the past my experience with calling a salon or spa has been, "Hello you have reached XYZ Salon and Day Spa. Please answer 'yes' if you will commit to scheduling a service or buying product right now. For all other inquiries please refer to our website." When Owner Sofie McConnaughay answered my call and allowed me to hem and haw around for a few minutes before finally admitting I wanted to get de-sasquatched - I felt heard and understood. When she suggested I come by, look around and ask questions, I was so relieved to not be pressure sold and more comfortable about asking what I think were very un-manly questions: i.e. "does it hurt...much?" By the time I walked into The Wicked Hair (downtown on 17th with easy FREE parking" I was sold. She told me it would be about 90 minutes and that I might experience some discomfort. Both statements now seem untrue: #1. It seemed like about 15 minutes. Sofie is so pleasant to talk to that time flew by and B. Although I probably would be distracted by sugaring if I was meditating I doubt the sensation would have kept me awake if I was really tired; in other words, little to no pain. I've been getting waxing services for 10 years. A couple months ago, I tried out The Wicked Hair because I liked the idea of hair removal without chemicals being put on my skin. I didn't have any expectations and assumed I was in for the same experience as waxing. Not only is the experience completely different, but I am now a true convert to sugaring! Aside from the (IMO) most important benefit of eliminating the toxins from the hair removal experience, sugaring is by far, much less painful! Sofie is incredibly knowledgeable about skin care in general and I have learned ten fold what I knew before about taking care of my skin. This knowledge has been imparted to me only during my sessions, I can only imagine what she can do for me when I finally get around to scheduling a skin consultation. Thanks to my experience with The Wicked Hair, my skin has gone from dry and ashy to AMAZING in only a couple months! Sofie is very detail oriented and it's a pleasant change from the usual waxing experience of 'slapping it on and ripping it off'. I have been a client at some very high end salons in the past and I have never felt like my esthetician cared as much about my experience and the health of my skin the way Sofie does. Be prepared to spend a little more time for the session than you would with waxing. Because the procedure is so much more detail oriented, more time has to be invested. I started looking for a waxing salon inorder to get a suprise brazillian for my fiance. I had heard co-workers discussing how much better sugaring was--so I decided to give it a try! Sophie is AMAZING! Since I only had experience with waxing, she was very thorough and patient as she explained the process and answered my questions. The first visit definately hurt the worst, but still less than a traditional wax. Follow-up visits do not hurt nearly as bad (as a wax) and I have even fallen asleep on the table! Sophie is also passionate and enthusiastic about skin care. I learned so much more about my skin "down there" than I'd ever expected. But it is totally worth it! I find that sugaring is even less painful if my skin is well cared for. Sophie is also an amazing source for general skin care. In preparing for the wedding, I was also looking to finally take the time and energy to care for my face. I recieved a skin care consultation from Sophie and was amazed. She not only took into consideration what she saw about my skin but also what my concerns were. Three months later, my face looked great for the wedding-with minimal make-up! I've been blessed with a winter coat of sorts...including my back! Needless to say, it can be embarrassing during the swimming months. I've been getting my back waxed for about ten years. A great business done well. Though I had heard about the sugaring process a long time ago, I was new to trying it out. I am sensitive to chemicals and many spa/salon products so I am hesitant to try new places but the results were much better than I had expected.
