I really was only going to browse but I ended up with a bottle of beaujolais and a sixpack of beer and brought them back with the pasta and sauce I'd bought at Monica's. There are much better options nearby. I have gone in 3 or 4 times to ask if they had a specific liquor. I even wrote down the name of the liquor once. This isn't a rare liquor, it's top shelf at the bar nearby. I stopped in this week to see if they had it yet. They said no. I asked, "Are you going to get it?" They said "No." and stared at me. I am more than happy to walk an extra block to Blanchards - they are friendly, have a wide variety, and support Black owned businesses (like Uncle Nearest Whiskey). I won't be going back. Would give a negative 50 if I could. I stopped in while walking back to my car after an amazing dinner at Uni to pick up a bottle of wine . But I didn't see what I wanted and there was no one to help me figure out if they had what I was looking for so I left shortly after entering the store without even touching a bottle of wine or any other item in the store. As I'm walking down the public sidewalk I hear someone saying something to me and turn around and it's someone from the liquor store saying I have to go back to the store because I didn't pay for the bottle of wine I took. Very upset, I returned to the store and put my jacket purse etc on the counter and said show me (they had at least 10 video cameras) where you see me touch let alone take anything from the store. They couldn't because I had touched nothing and they said "Oh, sorry we made a mistake". I asked them to explain why other than my being a black woman they had any basis for pursuing me in public and accusing me of stealing from their store Since they could easily see on cameras if I had taken anything They had none other than saying I left the store quickly and they mistook my phone (which I was using to find my way back to my car) as a bottle of wine! I then told them that "sorry" wasn't good enough. I ultimately called the owner of the store and said if they were going to publicly accuse me of being a thief they needed to also publicly state that they falsely accused me of stealing from their store. We stopped a group of people walking down the street outside the store and the person who accused me of stealing explained they had falsely accused me. Will never go to this store again! read more

I had the worst experience of my life regarding going to a liquor store. I just flew in from Ft. lauderdale at 2:30 yesterday, just getting off 3 17 hour shifts at EDC Orlando (I'm a Bartender). Basically. As I went to cash out, the female Latina behind the register started with me. She accused me of being there the day before & off the bay started calling me (in Spanish) an idiot & bitch... well I live in Miami. I speak Spanish. My total pops up... I give my card... she says it declined... ok get me outta here asap... meanwhile still going at it... I ask for boss, He's just listening to this girl berate a customer who's paying 47$ worth of product. I tell him I wasn't there yesterday, showed my posts on face book, now I'm balling my eyes out (I'm so overtired) this should not be my welcome home to Boston after being gone 3 months. So I hand her cash... she screws up gives me 3$ back in change. As I leave I notice my card was charged! she Lied. Now she has my cash( I didn't get a receipt)... I go back to get my cigarettes that where not put in bag.... I go back & talk go non active boss owner... that she just tried to heist me. I'm not stupid as she thought. I live in Miami. Finally I get cash back... I advised that He watched Her, get cameras on that register. Also that I would contact the BBB, & right this review. I'm sorry it was that bad. I love Jesus, but I drink a little. Know what else I love? Free wine tastings after work on Fridays, a healthy variety of beer, wine, and liquor for the drinkin', and the ability to play with neighborhood dawgs that come in with their alcoholic moms & dads! *burps & woofs* The guys who run the store are pretty friendly and are ready and willing to chat it up with you, recommend a beverage, or feed your four legged friend a treat. With a good bit of help from Yelpers, I spent a good part of 4 days strategically scouring Boston in an attempt to tap the Northeast craft beer scene. In that time, I visited probably a dozen liquor stores and numerous beer bars between the North End and Back Bay. Wild Duck was in my top three store finds. From national-distribution to rather obscure breweries, Wild Duck offers a pretty wide cross-section of the American beer spectrum, from California (Anderson Valley, Ballast Point) to New England (Gritty's, White Birch). They have the small Boston-area craft breweries covered: Pretty Things, Slumbrew, Mystic. And there were a few that I rarely/never saw at other stores: Maine Beer Co., Opa-Opa. My singular gripe with Wild Duck is that their beer cooler is devoted mostly to six packs of routine fare instead of the intriguing selection of 22oz. bottles on the shelves. Even then, when I inquired about refrigerated versions of the shelved stock, the staff started making calls to help me track down those beers at nearby North End bars! Made me feel like a rock star whose backstage rider didn't get filled. I could get used to that! If I lived in the area, I'd be a regular at Wild Duck. I just moved to the North End and was excited to have everything (including this liquor store) in such a close proximity. I stopped by to pick up some vodka. When I brought the bottle to the counter they asked for my ID. I gave it to them and they ran it through the machine...all pretty standard right? Well, for some reason my REAL DRIVERS LICENSE, ran through the machine as fake. Someone, who I presume to be the owner, told me he could tell the ID was fake and that he wasn't going to give it back to me! I had to threaten to call the police before he would give it back. Call me crazy but I feel like a liquor store should have a properly functioning ID reader. Not to mention, the employees should be able to identify a real ID themselves. The sign out front says that the name of this place is actually "The Wild Duck" and they have T-shirts that tourists (I suppose non-tourists too) can buy with their logo and "North End, Boston" written under said logo. There is also a sign over the door reading "Beer Necessities." Any convenience store that advertises itself as being a purveyor of beer necessities is 5 stars in my book...and perhaps worth a walk across the street to actually check it out in a bit. I've liked the wild duck location in Chinatown, hence I decided to stop by the one in north end today. Someone in the store made a comment that me, an Asian woman, would not be been in north end years ago. How our society has progressed because of racial integration. I should be thankful I could get a job in this country. Well sir, the fact that you could say something like that and everyone else in the store, especially the clerk, remained silent means our society still has a long way to go in terms of open mindedness and racial equality. Are you freaking kidding me? How has it taken me over a decade to find this place? It's unbelievable! Damien's review is my favorite, listing all the amazing things you can buy here. I went in today and left with a bottle of Malbec, a 6-er of Long Trail Pale Ale and Dale's Pale Ale. If I had another hand to carry more, I would've gotten Bloody Mary mix, some vodka, and a giant bottle of my favorite beer in the world - Tripel Karmeliet. Hmm. My experience here seems to be completely different from other reviewers, so I feel like I should stop back a few times to see if I stopped in on an "off" day or something...but other reviewers seem to compliment friendly employees and good customer service, which was not my experience. My only experience at Wild Duck was about a week ago when I stopped in to buy a pint bottle of whiskey. Never having shopped there in the past, I was pretty impressed by their selection of Italian specialty liqueurs and cordials! I asked if they carried Dimmi, which I saw advertised in La Cucina Italiana and would like to try. The cashier barely looked up from the register and said "Never heard of it" and went back to what he was doing, and the only other words to come out of his mouth were confirming the price of the whiskey and making change. Although I was put off by his unfriendly demeanor, I knew I'd visit the store again because of their selection of Italian specialty booze that you can't find in my neighborhood, but that inventory is the only reason I gave Wild Duck three stars instead of two. After reading these other reviews, I am willing to go back with an open mind and see if anything changes. Who knows? Maybe I came in on the day this guy's dog died or something. If I go back and the employee(s) act like they're glad I'm there, I'll amend my review. If not, three stars it is. read more

Yet another good wine and liquor store with a solid selection including some of Boulevard's award-winning brews. These guys had Samuel Adams' new Alpine Spring seasonal too. Stopped in last night on my way home (nice and close to Haymarket) to grab a new brew from Stone (Enjoy by IPA, strongly suggest picking it up). I had never been in before, but it was one of the only places in the city with it, and my friends from the North End said this was the place the locals go, and was pretty good. Beer selection is alright, not anything special. Had a few micro and local brews, but not anything I haven't seen before. No mix a 6 always makes me sad, but it will get the job done if you need a quick adult beverage while in the North End. read more

The people behind the counter are all nice, and consistently so. They carry Allagash White AND Allagash Black. If that weren't enough to draw you in and keep you loyal, they carry Duchesse De Bourgogne in big bottles (750mL?) so you can introduce that gem to your friends. read more

I was walking through the North End, lost, looking for The Fish Market (Mercato del Mare) and when I found it, I decided I should get everything else I need for my dish (Mussels in white wine sauce) before I go get the Mussels. I walk out of Mercato del Mare and immediately see Wild Duck. Walk in. Ask first guy I see if he could suggest a good cheap white wine for this dish. Price point - would prefer $10 or less. He points to a sad looking half empty shelf of YellowTails, Barefoots, and then points to a cardboard box "display" of Ugni Blanc and tells me it's possibly his favorite white wine in the store, and it's $9.99. He seems extremely excited about what I was cooking and knowledgeable about the flavor profiles of all the wines I asked about. Had ample suggestions for what kinds of wines (and their flavor profiles) would go with what kind of foods. I buy the ugni blanc. It's delicious. I'm so grateful. read more

Being pestered every second is not needed allow the customer to browse and if they happen to have any questions then they will ask. We just moved into the neighborhood, but have no doubts about making this a regular spot. Julio and Carlos behind the register replaced our bottles of Pinot Grigio from the shelf with chilled bottles from the fridge and even double bagged for easy carrying. I tend to go here quite often, North End prices but that is to be expected. The guys working here are MUCH nicer than the ones at the liquor store on Hanover Street. Two things I wish they stocked the Coney Island beers, they had them for a while then I drank them all in March and they have yet to get anymore, and 18 packs of Miller Lite. I am pretty sure they may have the cheapest cigarette prices in the North End, a good hint if you are a dirty smoker, like me. read more

They have a large selection for a SMALL liquor store but for some reason they don't carry 18 racks or 30 racks.. Their price is also really expensive (even their specials). If you're with a large group be prepared to all be FORCED into the SMALL store by "scrooge" where you're so tightly packed that everyone is like a can of sardines trying not to knock over any glass just so you can wait in line (long on Thursday/Friday/Saturday Nights) just so they can save all your personal information (including a picture of your ID) on their computer. Talk about POSSIBLE IDENTITY THEFT who knows how secure their network is or where that information goes/if its sold. I know they do it to protect themselves from selling alcohol to a minor but having all your PERSONAL INFORMATION (Address/Birthday/License#/Picture) copied and saved to their computer raises a red flag with me. The guy with the grey hair and glasses is anything but nice. (Could it kill you to smile or say Hello?) If he's not there you don't have to worry about your party of 15 all having to go inside and have their personal information copied/saved when one person wants a bottle of pack of cigs. If it wasn't for Moe always making my day It would of been 1 star. read more
