The new owners do not care about the neighborhood and it is evident in the 10 months or so they have operated the store. Take a look around the outside of the store anytime and you will find trash and empty nips. The business really looks like a head shoppe selling booze. The Scenario: Headed to a wine party, forgot to grab a bottle of the South American variety. A big "Oh shizzzz!" I scoffed when my friend suggest MM but later applauded her brilliance when we scoped out the goods. Serious selection of brews, vino and hard alkee at decent prices. The Answer: ... came in a bottle with a simple label, back left of the store, lower shelf. It screams "DRINK ME" in maroon ink and a cherub graphic - La Costa, I believe. The Price: I don't know if I should really disclose this as the host of the soiree is going to think I'm a cheap bastard. The result: Commendable. We were in and outta there in a jiffy, but still had time for some silly banter over the unusually high counter with the cashiers who seemed stoned and/or bored outta their minds. Whatevs. read more

It's close to my house, they sell beer, booze, milk, wine and assorted sundries. The beer prices are a little steep, but a friend says they do good deals on wine. The staff are usually friendly, sometimes indifferent, sometimes they don't realise whose there first. Also the lines for the 2 cash registers can be confusing, is there one line for both, or a line each? Anyways, it's probably the best convenience store, local shop in the hood, and it's still family run. Also, whenever I walk past with the dog, she wants to go say hello to the cat. read more

I have purchased wine, beer, paper towels, baby wipes, popcorn, fruit, coconut water, magazines, scratch tickets, Bacardi, chocolate syrup, a random delicious deli sandwich, draino and a few other odds and ends... do these things define me? I have needed all of these things in a pinch and they were all waiting for me at Marlboro Market. They are strict with ID's. I go there practically every day, I am almost 30 and get carded each time. Good for them! The staff is interesting.. helpful, sometimes indifferent, sometimes friendly, but never mean or rude. I hate how in Massachusetts stores stop selling liquor at 11. It should say a lot about them that i once paid $1.59 for a package of ramen noodles here and i don't begrudge them this. The prices on some grocery items are ridiculous in a way that reminds you that you live in a big city and that this is right in the middle of it and some things are going to be ridiculous. At the same time, the beer is reasonable, and especially the bomber bottles downstairs are not bad (and there is a solid, solid selection of these). The sandwiches are pretty good, too, and reasonably satisfying for the price. The folks that work here are also very friendly, nice to homeless weirdos, people with dogs, and sweaty people that are looking to tank up on Gatorade after a run. It's a surprisingly punk-rock convenience store that'd fit in in Allston, really. Generally speaking, you're going here because you have some sort of itch to scratch, nourishment-wise, and i always come out having found something that is going to make me happy. I used to live at Marlborough and Gloucester so this was my go-to location for late-night snacks and drinks. Everything's overpriced, but it's a fucking corner store; you don't go there for the savings. You go there when you've run out of tampons at 10 pm on a Sunday or when you really, really need batteries and Fruity Pebbles, and the battery and Fruity Pebble store you usually go to is closed because it was based on a terrible business model. This place also doubles as a liquor store, thank the gods, and the beer and wine selection are great and cheap. Sometimes there are 2 for $10 wine deals so keep an eye out. That deal also happened to coincide with the Stanley Cup Finals and I almost didn't make it out alive. The staff are friendly and helpful. It's like the Cheers of convenience stores. read more

This gets four stars for the sandwiches. Like people have written before, everything else is slightly expensive (Kind of like the nearby Shaws -- not obscenely overpriced, but enough to make you go "hmmm...") The sandwiches, on the other hand, are $4-$6, and delicious. I get liverwurst ($4) a couple times a week on my way to work, and it's AWESOME. Yes, I'm "That Guy," eating liverwurst with onions on the T. So sue me. I live kitty-corner to the Marlboro Market, so I might be a bit biased. I've lived right near it for two years now and I can't say enough about how awesome it's been. Whether needing a good microbrew, a fresh deli sandwich, or just a gallon of milk, Marlboro Market's there to satisfy your urge. They're open until 11 every night, so it's awesome for a late night necessity. The staff is really nice (for the most part) and I've gotten to know them over the years. This place is NOT inexpensive!! Where are you guys from, London???!?! $6.00 for a sixer of domestic macrobrew?? 30 packs and cases are way-overpriced too ($22.00 +). Liquor prices are higher than they should be as well. Best deal is a Busch 40 oz for $2.15. Other than that, steer clear!! Cold cuts here seem like a nightmare as well. I once bought some Genoa salami there that was cut 3 days before and tasted gross. As a former deli slicer (my first real job), the cut was way too thick for Genoa, and it was certainly a sub-par brand. Sadly, I could have gotten better salami at the Subway around the corner. How can you call yourself a deli if you don't sell fresh-cut meats? Worth the train ride to one of the big packies in Allston to save some dough on booze, well worth the train ride to the North End to get real cold cuts at J. Pace's Market. UPDATE: 8/29 - I have since warmed up to Marlboro Market. The beer is still overpriced, but it's so dang convenient. The wine they have on sale is a good deal, and the people who work here are friendly. So, there's your 3rd star that was lacking when I first moved into the neighborhood. read more

Don't be fooled by the unassuming name or store front. Marlboro Market is actually nice deli and liquor store. It's prime location makes it the prefect place to pick up a 6 pack of something new, a nice bottle of wine. Even some chilled Veuve Clicquot. The lady at the register asked if she could help me with anything. I told her about a beer I was looking for that I didn't know the name of and she directed me towards the right one, Sam Adams Cherry Wheat. The best thing about this place is it's location. It's easy to get to and has good hours. And they do have almost everything under the sun you could want. Since there aren't a ton of grocery stores downtown this place is good. Yes, it is a bit overpriced but that's to be expected because of it's location and convenience. The market has just changed ownership- it is now a full bore LIQUOR STORE and it has lost it's variety store content. It is FILTHY DIRTY AS OF LAST NIGHT. There is hardly any food. there are NIPS in the old food display case and the floors are dirty-the undersides of the shelves are dirty and it has an abandoned feeling. Talk about selection. It's almost like a 7/11 with alcohol they have so many treats and foodstuffs in here. Two whole floors piled high with assorted goodness. Thankfully, they have plenty of alcohol, too, including a rare but always joyful find: blackberry brandy. Marlboro Mart is super convenient for all of these and open till 11pm, EVEN ON A SUNDAY! Its an awesome store to have in the neighborhood, but also one of the only liquor stores in the city open THAT late! BUT, if you are under 21, take heed. They are very strict on ID's and pride themselves on catching under age drinkers. Just behind the cash register they have a whole wall of fakes that they taken away over the years. As far as booze go, they actually have a rather large wine selection. They have a deal where if you buy 10 bottles you get 20%, so my roommate and I often leave weighed down with wine. Planning to drinks something right away? Check in the back corner by the beer, because so many people buy stuff last minute they usually have a pretty large % of beer/wine that is already chilled. Check downstairs for all your snacking and random needs. They have all sorts of cat/dog food in case you are left in a pinch -- as well as people food for parties. And if your still into renting movies, they have a fairly large selection of DVD's you can bring home for the week. **like most back bay liquor stores, they have a large cat that could eat my seven pound dog. love the neighborhood feeling in a big city. The help is always friendly even though it isn't always a familiar face. the reasonable wine and cheap movie rentals are a steal. The store is a hit with the locals, but college kids be warned there is a wall of fakes they have taken away. Moral of the story if you are of age, and live nearly, stop on by. A tale we all know too well: What a downward turn this place took as the ownership changed. This place went from a lovely little neighborhood corner store to a strip mall style liquor store full of dust and expired grocery products. The employees used to be cheerful and friendly, but now it's just a "pay me and leave" attitude with the new employees. Walk 50 more yards towards the Charles river on Mass. Ave and go to Quality Mart for a much better experience, unexpired groceries, and at least an attempt at cleanliness. What a shame! read more

Great place, good prices, open - always? I've never seen it closed. Groceries, wines, beers, glue, frozen foods, greeting cards (from the 80s) and DVD's. The people are so nice. I accidentally flung a DVD into the spiral staircase and someone had to dig it out of the basement. And they did it with a smile. There is a cat there that my dog is afraid of. As a back bay resident I used to frequent this place all the time, and thought highly of it as a quick buy anything type store. Unfortunately (fortunately??) that is all going to change after the experience I had today. My roommate and I came in to buy champagne to celebrate the fabulous day we were having (new job, successful completion of important exam). After showing my completely real penndot (pennsylvania department of transportation for those that are not familiar) issued PA state driver's license to confirm that I was indeed 22 years old, I was denied service. This was based on the fact that the 19 year old (his age was confirmed by another customer) that checked it had never seen a PA license with a Philadelphia address that abbreviated the obnoxiously long "Philadelphia" to "Phila." I kindly told him that he could confirm the validity of my license by calling the cops or perhaps the pennsylvania department of transportation, if he so chose. Instead, he quite rudely informed me that me and my license were "skeezy." Obviously offended, I then produced numerous other forms of identification including a credit card, school ID, and United States passport and asked him if they were also "skeezy." He then proceeded to yell at me, inform me that "hobo's have more class" than me, and demand that I leave his store. The long and short of my review is that, yeah, this place is convenient if you don't mind being denied service and called the equivalent of a lying dirty whore for doing something completely legal. read more

I had a pretty bad experience here this morning. I asked for an iced coffee, and a woman working there went to get ice from an ice bag in the freezer with the liquor, and then used her bare hands to reach into the bag and put the ice cubes in my coffee which I found pretty gross. The coffee was warm, so I wound up with melted dirty ice cubes in lukewarm coffee. The place had a decent selection of items, but their health standards were not so great so be careful about their coffee! read more

You're not going to find a cheap liquor store in Back Bay...just sayin'. So I don't think the complaints about overly expensive liquor here is really warranted. Sure, you won't find any 3 buck chuck here, but even the Trader Joe's on Boylston doesn't have any alcohol, so... This is a convenient location for Back Bay residents that don't live near the Shaw's at Copley and there's a decent selection of wine and probably a better selection of beer downstairs (I only go for wine so I can only guess). It isn't a dedicated liquor store but still stands its ground real well and has some great prices. Furthermore, they also have snacks and food making them a very, very convenient location to hit up as you are headed to a party or for hosts out there. Solid all around market. Carry a little bit of everything you might need. Their sandwiches are amazing. I've dabbled in three or four different ones in the past couple months, each time great, each time with a good amount of high quality deli meats and cheeses on them. They don't skimp. Three minor small problems I have run into over the past year that I've lived here..... 1) I swear I've bought beer around MA after 11 but before midnight. They toss tables up and don't budge on it. Kinda stinks, but if they are following the rules then good for them. 2) When you do buy beer, some brands are strewn about loose from containers in bottom of cooler, and prices vary from day to day. A couple times I've bought a six pack where the sticker said $5.99.... and gotten to the register where they say $6.49 or $6.99. 3) Their sandwiches are so good that they frequently run out of various meats, cheeses and breads. Really annoyed me the other day when I wanted a roast beef and pepper jack on an onion roll and they had neither roast beef nor an onion roll. Not the first time that's happened, either. The plus side to that? I tried the Dynamic Duo and it was delicious. read more
