I came by myself one evening, got seated right away, and it was a good place to enjoy a solo dinner and just take in the scene. The Winery has a cool atmosphere, and is usually a mix of young people having fun and families dining out or celebrating something. And of course it's a great place to get wine! Arrived to a nearby event early and stopped in here for a glass of excellent Sauvignon Blanc. Given that I usually prefer New Zealand whites, the fact that I had a great South Australian white really stood out. Although it was a Monday night, by the time I left at 6:45, the joint was jumping. I enjoyed the people watching while I chilled on my own, as this seems to be a popular first date spot. Still, what may make it a great place for dates is that no one's going to bother you--this place just has that vibe where you know getting adequate service is going to be tricky. A lot of people like this place. I've been there many times because people enjoy going there. And I can see many reasons to like it: - The location, right in the heart of Surry Hills - The outdoor area (great on a warm, clear evening) - The extensive wine menu However, in the end, it's too busy for me. It's tough (impossible at certain times) to find a table. It's a bit overpriced. And, outside of wine, their drinks are not especially amazing. For example, my Old Fashioned had been watered down given the amount of time that the ice had to melt before the liquor was poured in. If you want wine, this place is great, but if you want to easily find a seat and have a nice cocktail, I suggest looking elsewhere. read more

Such a cute venue. Came here on the weekend for an after dinner cocktail and was not disappointed. We went straight upstairs to the champagne room. The decor is cosy, old Manhattan. Great for a cocktail or a wine. My old fashion was delicious. The bar staff know exactly what they are doing . The more favourable things about this modern wine bar and restaurant are its venue, its wine list and its fit out. A couple of blocks south of Oxford street on Crown, it's a perfect place for unwinding on a warm summer afternoon and evening. Needless to explain....it's a popular place. Well fitted out with polished wood beams, glass encased wine cabinets, subdued lighting, funky tunes....what a great night ahead I thought. But....Don't do as we did on a Wednesday night and drop in without a reservation and put your name on the wait last for a table. " ....It will only be 30 mins, please have a seat in our bar..." Unfortunately the front staff are hopelessly overwhelmed and fall into the cunning trade practice of keeping wait listed patrons checking back for a table while racking up a bill in the bar, while other walk ins are gleefully seated around the establishment. I guess we looked like we could afford a big drink tab....90 mins later we were found a table. Mentally, I had already checked out... The food menu is faux Francais with reasonable choices in all the main course categories of beef, poultry and poisson. Nothing memorable about our meal when it finally arrived. Admittedly, the wine list is good and over the course of the evening we explored our way over three continental regions. But nevertheless what should have been a much enjoyed evening was spoilt by young self serving front staff acting lost and bewildered. Can't really recommend this place to anyone other than those wanting to idle themselves for hours over several glasses of wine or champagne. You didn't need me to tell you this, but this place is just adorable. Fairytale garden with lights in trees; eclectic furniture upstairs and the ceiling covered in odd chandeliers; a lovely wine list and plates of munches (real food, too; but we only had the cheese plate and the radishes with sea salt and butter -- yum!). A bottle of Bandol rosé chased away the rainy afternoon in the most delightful way possible. What a find! read more

This was such a disappointing experience. My first glass of wine was off, we asked two servers for water (3 times) before we got any and the food was mediocre at best (scallops overcooked). The most annoying thing was that our server knew nothing about wine - like NOTHING - and they call themselves a wine bar. I'm surprised this place is doing well in this city that adores its food and drink. Do yourself a favour, go to an actual wine bar (of which there are heaps including one right up the road) if you're after wine, and a real restaurant if you're after good food. read more

Nice place, great place to sit and chill and have a catch up with friends. The outside area is great in the summer, the upstairs is a little less casual but oozes atmosphere. They do some things really well - most notably the wine (if you didn't get by the name). The cocktails are passably good, but if I wanted good cocktails I'd head to a cocktail bar. The food is really good - Lobster Tuesday anyone? Although as a warning I found the size of the meal perhaps slightly smaller then would have been nice (especially for the price). While I'm not usually one for stuffed (or maybe plush toy?), chickens hanging down from the ceiling or faux antelopes hanging on the walls I'm going to have to give props to this place. The Surry Hills wine bar doesn't take itself too seriously and that makes for a comfortable place to meet up with friends, have a drink or celebrate an event of some kind. They have 2 floors of tables, 2 bars and a laneway outside. The food is fancy, high-end bar food. If you are trying to eat healthy or stick to your diet, steer clear of the menu. The sides and shared plates are delicious (who doesn't like hand cut fries, celeriac & roast garlic mash, crispy little fish or mac and cheese). They have daily specials but the Champagne, grape & chicken pie or 'Steak frites' are always a good choice. They have a great wine and drink list and the deserts are devilishly tasty. The Winery is on our short list of go to places to meet up with friends after work. If you have a group of people (more than 3) we suggest you book a table, though you can walk up and see if they have room. It gets crowded from Thursday on and you might not get a table inside and have to settle for the bar or laneway. I don't think I have ever had a bad time at The Winery and thus it deserves all of my 5 stars. And if you are like me and enjoy your wines, you won't have a bad time either. It is probably hands down one of the best indoor/outdoor venues in Sydney (unless of course you like a little pool and a lot less clothes). The Winery is a classy place but doesn't have an attitude about it. The host is always extremely lovely and professional about getting you seated or taking your number if there is going to be a wait. The bartenders are a whirlwind of wine and cocktail knowledge and won't be shy to throw around their two cents if you need it. The laneway seating is just my kinda thing on a summer's afternoon or balmy evening. There are no reservations allowed out here and seats fill up fast, so get there early to avoid disappointment. Be prepared to miss out and if such is the case, refrain yourself from becoming that person who hovers over tables waiting for people to leave. Seemingly mismatched furniture with candles, animal prints and hanging potted plants deck out the charming interior. You will find seating upstairs and down that exudes a luscious boudoir type of feeling. Although a little pricey, the jugs make for a great sharing drink. I especially warm to the Pimms and Lemonde ($25). You can catch me drinking one of these bad boys on any given Sunday. Just do yourself a favour, come to The Winery and get to one of the coolest bars in Sydney. You will regret it if you don't. read more

Great location and setting, comfortable seating, pretty flowers, nice decorations etc. It's a nice place to go for a drink - but certainly not more than a few, and if you're eating you'll most definitely break the bank! Went on a Friday evening and found it mobbed. There's a lot of buzz and activity, and obviously a place to be seen, especially the meat market upstairs. But if you arrive after 6pm you're probably going to have stand, because the stools at the bar tables will be full, and all the tables will be occupied by those having dinner. And forget talking, it's one of the loudest non-club venues I've ever been to. Twenty-three and want to be where the action is? Go for it. I came for hens lunch yesterday, opting to do the Bottomless Bellinis package. The food was delicious and plenty to go around and there was a great atmosphere in the champagne room. However, myself and a few other guests who are pregnant, had booked to do this package, but a non-alcoholic version (for $45). We thought this would mean that we would get the same bellinis minus the alcohol (but with soda water instead). Instead we were told that our package only included the food and if we wanted to add the non-alcohic bellinis (a dash of fruit juice and soda water) we would need to pay the same price as normal (alcohol package - $79). The other alternative was to just go and order our own drinks at the bar. I don't think I'm crazy to be quite annoyed that we would have to pay the same price as everyone else, when quite obviously alcohol costs a much higher amount than water! I felt really ripped off by this and the lack of understanding was lost on staff. In future, this venue needs to make guests well aware in advance of how their packages work for no alcohol options and really consider their actions and service. This is quite appalling. I am happy to pay for my own drinks, but it would have been courteous to have this explained clearly in advance, instead of having guests being taken aback at what seems like quite an outrageous deal for people not drinking. read more

We came here based on the recommendation of the gentleman at the front desk of our friend's hotel. It's definitely a local favorite and a common place that tourists are likely referred to. The ambience and setting of this place was lovely! As you walk up, you feel like you're entering a secret garden with inviting outdoor lights to guide you towards the restaurant which feels like it's tucked away in a secret hiding place. There's a waiting area with benches and seats, then a couple of patio seating areas all surrounded by archways, creating an open yet intimate feel with lights and foliage all around. There is also a bar and some seating inside, with dim lighting and a very woodsy, warm feel. This place is packed so definitely make reservations if you can! We came on a Saturday night and waited about an hour, which isn't terrible but it was about 8pm when we arrived. We headed to the bar to order some drinks while we waited. They had a great menu of mixed cocktails that were very unique and vibrant. The mixology was great and fun to watch. The drinks are detailed and the bartenders definitely take great care to make the drinks to perfection! My friend had the Giggly Rose which is actually made with rose petals, which was really lovely! The smell was amazing but using such fresh, raw ingredients was spectacular! My other friend had the Coco Chanel which was also nice. Neither drink was too sweet although they sound like they could be. They also have a decent variety of beers and a large selection of wines, but I definitely think their cocktail menu is where it's at. The drinks are very innovative but alcohol is ridiculously expensive in Australia, so be ready to shell out some BIG bucks! Beers around $10-15 a pint, mixed drinks around $15-20 and wine around $10-15 a glass. By far, wine is your best bet if you want your money to go somewhere. Loved the uniforms of the bartenders. Suspenders, bowties and striped shirts- fun but classic yet still relaxed. You're usually notified your table is ready via text but since we were visiting, we just told our hostess where we'd be so she could notify us personally since we were waiting around otherwise you can leave and come back when you've received the text your table is ready. We ended up on the patio and the booth side of the bench had lots of pillows and was nice and cozy. The server was good with great recommendations, but it was so busy that at times it took quite awhile for him to come back around and check on things. We tried the heart and bone marrow as starters. The heart was excellent but the marrow wasn't what I expected. Somehow, I was under the impression that marrow would be chewy and have more texture but it's essentially like really soft fat. I actually really dislike fat on steak which is why generally I order a filet, but for what it is, it was good. My friend loves fat so she ate that up! The heart was really good! Appetizers were pricey though, around $18-20 each. 3 of my friends ordered the spanner crab pasta and I tried the special which was a meat dish with a sauce, potatoes and some side garnishes. The pasta was a bit bland, but did have that heat which was a nice kick. Otherwise, it was pretty light and a bit plain in flavor. My dish was good, but wasn't as delectable as our server made it sound to be. Although, maybe dining preferences are much different in Australia. I feel like the majority of dining in Australia follows a very British style and doesn't have as wide a range of variety as the US for restaurants that fall in this type of category. Entrees on average are close to $30-35. By far, a nicer restaurant but comes with a price tag for this level of dining. A great restaurant with fun, social vibe, good food, fantastic cocktails, wonderful melee but definitely on the pricier side of things but assume it's typical for this restaurant style in Australia. read more

On a winter's Saturday, with a cool bright sky, we took ourselves off down Crown Street, the artery of Surry Hills. The area was "the place to be". Our first stop was the Winery. Bit hard to find at the back of the old SYDNEY reservoir, but as there were so many reserved places in a big restaurant, who cares? They found us nice seats and as were there for just the starter, we were able to truly relax, from the bustle of Oxford Street and the city beyond. We chose the share, Porcini Arancini, goats cheese and lots of other cheese. I had chosen the Chardonnay from Coldstream in the Yarra Valley. The combination was perfect as it truly enhanced the Chardonnay. My wife's Malbec was equally as good. We could have stayed for more of the menu and intend to return for the weekday special. No one came to take out drinks order after 30 mins and we had to go to the bar ourselves. The mains were ok but our wine arrived half an hour after we finished our lunch and we had to ask for it. I went here one very scorching night last summer, it was great to have the outdoor area to cool off in. The environment promotes a classy exterior and the dress code is flash. However, It was too hot to look down upon my casual, flirty singlet dress. It was stripy anyway. I was having a drink with a guy for the first time, and we found ourselves moving around the venue to position ourselves in several different spots. We lent against the bar for a bit, then we sat on 2 very ornate looking chairs that looked like they were more for display than actually sitting on , and we were right, they were dressing up the pass door to the kitchen, anyhow we didn't stay there long. We did stand outside for awhile, it was that busy we had to wait in line for a seat outdoors. But we finally did get one and we chatted away for a couple of hours. They have a great full bar with cocktails, a variety of wines, white, red and rose. It was so hot I had a rose. I would highly recommend this place, you can have dinner here to, but we only stayed for a drink. It gets quite busy on Saturday night so you might want to arrive early. read more

I really love the ambiance at The Winery. Stopped by one night after dinner on a Monday night and and fell in love with the decor' and 80's/90's hip hop music. People watching was a bonus as everyone there was beautiful. We enjoyed it so much that we went back on a Sunday afternoon for bloody marys and tapas. Wow! does not even begin to cover the ambience and decor. As you walk through the different sections of this bourgeois establishment you are amazed with the attention to detail and the elaborate scene setting. Loved the vertical garden wall with a the peacock in the middle, the awesome earns as you walk up the stairs, really cool toilets, the quirky tables and chairs and well dressed friendly staff. The women in group absolutely adored the place but, I don't think you would want to go there as just a bunch of men out for a drink or general work drinks. The food portions are great and they have some great tapas styled options to make it a great night out when you want to spend some money, impress your clients or a have just a good night out. read more

Had dinner at The Winery last night (03/03/2016) and it was a very disappointing experience. I ordered the Beetroot Salad which sounded amazing on the menu - salted beetroot, cinnamon pumpkin... But what I actually got was a greasy plate of grassy rocket and kale. There there were 4 pieces of beetroot and pumpkin combined. For $25 I was expecting a full and filling salad. But I what I got was a badly mixed horrible tasting meagre plate of lettuce. What was worse - When I said to the waitress (who looked like she was a floor manager) that I was not happy with the salad. She couldn't care less. Her response was "You can order something else but you'll still have to pay for the salad"...And walked off. She wasn't even slightly curious about the reason for my complaint. My date ordered the Salumi Plate which was also appallingly for $25 : some breadsticks, slices of salami, olives which is to be expected. But it also came with some kind of odd candied fruit which tasted horrible. For a share plate, the portions were really only enough for one person. I would not recommend The Winery: it's over priced bad food and even worse service. read more
