It's a vast cavern with pretty much everything you could need to fashion something for yourself and if you run out of ideas, don't fear, because there's also a whole section of gifts from picture frames to vases. My favourite place is the second floor though which is an Aladdin's cave of fabrics and haberdashery as well as wools as well as crafting items: beads, paper, canvases and more. I bought myself a couple of feather cushions, buttons and cotton fabric from here for less than £12 recently, just need to find the time to make them now!

I had to fit my visit into the shop's limited and somewhat odd operating hours, but fit it into my schedule, I did. And I'm sure glad I did as well. The shop is nothing special from the outside, and it's nothing particularly special from the inside. The walls are cubby holes dedicated to the seemingly haphazard storage of knitting wool/yarn. It's par for the course of any knitting/crocheting store, really. But the jewel of this place is its business owner, retired Mrs M.A. Jones. She self-professedly runs a wool shop to keep herself out of trouble. Love. Her. She is potentially the most helpful person I've met in my life. She's eager to hear about your project and to give you ideas on what yarns will be best for it. She doesn't try to upsell you, and she will recommend an acrylic wool if that's what will suit your project the most. I went in one day and bought a skein of wool. I went in the next day to buy some more, but mostly to show off what I'd done with the first skein, so eager I was for her encouragement and praise. She stocks both high-end and economical wools, so if you're cheap like me you won't have to suppress your balking at the dear wools that come with dear prices. 100 grams of a 70/30 acrylic-alpaca for £2.99 suits me just fine.

The proprietress is usually on hand to help with patterns if you are having a problem - but if she is not there, the other ladies on the till are all experienced knitters, crocheters and stitchers. If something is not there it can be ordered. There is a comprehensive selection of the latest craft books. The yarns stocked are contemporary (Noro, Debbie Bliss) aswell as the traditional baby wools and old favourites such as Sirdar. There is also everything to do with embroidery, cross-stitch, beadwork, and a large haberdashery. The shop is constantly busy but there is a chair available near the till if you have to wait awhile. There are always newly made up garments, from the latest pattern books, displayed in the window. This is really helpfull when looking at some of the exciting new yarns. The shop is closed on Wednesdays and Sundays. Parking is in Mount St Pay & Display which is more or less opposite.

I came in with a friend who was inquiring about a certain pattern, and the girl working was extremely friendly and as helpful as could be - even though her advice meant we didn't end up needing to buy anything... Perhaps what makes this store especially unique is their fantastical window displays, made entirely of, you guessed it - yarn. Apparently there's a whole slew of "knitting artists" out there... and many of them are on the monthly docket of this shop to deck out the window in whimsical and unbelievably architectural cascades of yarn. Last month it was a (large!) knitted sink and toilet... this month its a wooly version of a snowman. The shop offers classes... now, I'm not exactly one to bother knitting a scarf... but a truly ambitious and artistic construction of woven fiber is a slightly different and more enticing story... for £40 I can join one of their classes for "knitters and crocheters who have visions!" Hmmm....

As a keen crafter who grew up in jumpers hand knitted and handed down by me ma I don't think it's anything special. Went in to check it out and the attendant was pretending she didn't notice us (2 people) this is hard to believe as you can almost see a red stripe round the walls where someone tried to swing a cat. When the attendant finally acknowledged us with a face like someone had dropped a stitch we had just about seen all of the meagre ammount of items on sale. I think they do 'knitting circles' in there too. In such a small space it would be the ideal way to pass on knits. Get yourself up the Roman Road nearby for bargain haberdashery and a fairly good sewing shop with a lovely chap who repairs machines.

I am no spring chicken, mind you, but I'm a young whipper snapper compared to some of the clientele. The supplies are good, though the selection of crochet accessories is rather woeful, with the vast majority catering towards the home knitter. And there are usually some yarns which are on sale. Having come from North America I am used to yarn being much cheaper - with lines such as Red Heart, Lion & Bernat. I am aware that these yarns are not readily available in the UK, but I suspect that there is still this mentality that knitting/crochet should be only with expensive yarns. I would like this shop, and others, to carry some cheaper acrylic yarns - not everything needs to be made of alpaca wool handpicked by Mayan Indians in the wilds of Ecuador, sometimes cheap acrylic and/or questionable cheap welsh wool is just as good.
