The reason I like this place is the expert behind the counter, who mends things skilfully (sometimes while you wait), and peruses things through a jeweller's glass as you browse, giving the whole place an air of Dickensian authenticity. He won't blink were you to take him an intricate old pocket watch, for example - he can put his hands instantly on the correct tools, and clearly has the knowhow to deal with pretty much anything you might need fixing. I took in a bracelet for a friend once in which the filigree clasp was the focus of the design, and had fallen off at a gig and been trampled on by a succession of excitable sixteen year olds before being rescued. He merely whipped out a succession of miniscule needle nosed pliers and almost by magic, restored it to perfect working order. He didn't even charge. He felt it was too easy. Altogether then, it's probably not worth the visit for the stock alone, but it would be an excellent choice for restoration and repairs.

One half of the shop is more like an art gallery - drawings and paintings displayed on the wall, with unframed copies available for lower prices. Some of the artwork looked strangely familiar to me - and I recognised the name Quentin Blake as the illustrator for Roald Dahl's books. Neat! The rest of the shop is an arts and crafts-y gift shop: magnetic poetry, art supplies, jewellery ranging from kitschy to elegant, day planners, journals, posters and some large, colourful art books. A selection of greeting cards is also available, and Christmas items have been discounted - decorations and holiday knick knacks. The shop has a nice, laid back atmosphere and a wide variety of items if you don't mind getting close to strangers while you work your way around.

Though I didn't buy anything, I was tempted. Beautiful wood that is a delight to touch and look at. The mirrors are outstanding. It can't be a cultural misunderstanding, we've made friends and spent thousands of pounds & euros across Europe in record shops and always made new friends as a result. We take cues from Ted Lasso & Brenee Brown to leave good karma and positive first impressions in our wake when out and about. Somehow our best efforts crashed and burned at Cult Hero. We noted the 'no food or drinks' sign at the entrance and we finished our tiny paper cups of espresso before entering. Jennifer combined them into one small folded up fragment and entered, looking for a waste bin to place them in. Not seeing one she asked one of the two men behind the counter "do you have a trash bin so I may throw this away?" Without answering, he slowly reached out and took the bit of paper from her hand as if grasping a foul object and stared at her, his face communicating absolute contempt and disgust. They locked eyes for an uncomfortable span at which point Jennifer said "you could've simply said 'no' ..." I missed this and asked her why she looked so upset and intent on leaving the shop we'd made pains to arrive at. I then turned to the sallow, glaring guy and noted: "Generally my friend, it's a given you should be kind to your patrons and not ignore their queries or be rude to them." To which he leaned towards me and affected an exaggerated pantomime of appearing menacing for a span of time. "That's exactly what I'm talking about" I added, "that weird thing you're doing right now". His comrade then hissed under his breath "fa**ot". Astonished at this insult, especially in Brighton a city known for its inclusiveness, I said "Really? That's your reply?" then added "we drop hundreds of pounds in most every record shop we've entered. Congratulations on running us out." I surmise the stocky, angry and mute guy was either massively hungover, constipated or impotent (all of the above?) though that wouldn't warrant being an complete knob to a random couple. His punishment is that he has to live with himself for the rest of his life. Please: shop elsewhere. They don't deserve your money.

This gem of a music shop used to be on Duke Street nestled in between the chocolate and clothes…read morestores. Earlier this year, it moved to this bigger location on North Street - where it seems to attract more passersby. The layout and aesthetic of the shop is reminiscent of Fopp with racks of CDs, DVDs, books and vinyl all making good use of the space. There's special offers introducing new albums and re-issues for the bargain price of £5 and the rest of the stock is reasonably priced too. Rock, pop and indie lovers will find what they're looking for but there's also strong mini-sections devoted to everything from techno, drum'n'bass and electronica to R&B, soul, funk, classical music and soundtracks. The DVDs range from music to cult and world cinema flicks and the books are great too. Think Bukoswki, Burroughs and books on classic cities and design eras. If you're new to Brighton and fancy going to some gigs, they also sell tickets for most of the local venues and have lots of posters and flyers advertising forthcoming shows from Peaches to Florence and The Machine.

The selection varies enormously over time, so it's worth popping for a look - sometimes I leave with nothing, but I've also had some great bargains here. Staff can be a bit off-hand, but in my experience that's par for the course for discount bookshops.

David's Book Exchange is the sister store to Dave's comics and tends to be more of a discount book…read moreshop. They also cover a number of comics and items that have dropped off the shelves of Dave's comics. You will find a good range of fiction and non fiction titles here and everything is at reasonable prices. A lot of books are in very good condition and you can pick up a number of art books for under a tenner. You can also pick up a bargain 2nd hand paper back that has a few reads left in it and the shop is close enough to the station if you weren't up for reading a paper. They also sell a lot of trading cards here for games like Magic and the like. If that is your kind of thing they have a lot of rare cards you can buy individually. It's best to ask at the counter to see what they have. You won't necessarily find very specialised books, but I reckon there would likely be something for everyone on the shelves somewhere. The staff are also friendly enough and happy to point you in the right direction (or pile!!!)

If I was naming this shop I would personally call is Shoo, which I think is snappier, and less confusing for Sean Connery and/or Dutch people... Always a decent selection of fashionable numbers from all your favourite sports makes, such as Nike and Adidas, and constantly updated, so always with the times. However this means Schuh can be too expensive, if you just want a pair of trainers and your not too bothered by how new they are, I would recommend going elsewhere.

There's at least a dozen different Converse hi-tops as well as fresh sneakers from Etnies, Adidas, Fred Perry and Onitsuka Tiger. If you're looking for something more formal, they also sell shoes by Rocket Dog, Red or Dead, Irregular Choice, Sketchers and Iron Fist as well as their own Schuh designs. I spent a good fifteen minutes trying half the shop on Sunday and eventually settled for a fabulous pair of off-white leather ankle boots. I know winter is the wrong time to buy white boots but what the hell... it was my birthday!

I wound up buying a Minolta Minox and hope to some day bring home a Leica III he has in excellent condition
