The Yard and Yoshi are excellent. This review will hopefully be helpful as an update to how class is run (since class has changed a little). First my background: I've trained Muay Thai for two years (first time was in April of 2022). I've trained at 7 gyms: FLMT (Florida Muay Thai , OC MT, Team Oyama, Classic Fight Team, Rising Suns Thai Boxing, NELA Combat Fitness, and Boxing Works. My home gym for the last year was Boxing Works under the instruction of Coach Bryan Popejoy, where I trained 3-4 days a week and did one on ones once a week for about 3 month. I would've stayed there however I recently moved to Northeast LA (Highland Park) and the drive to Torrence for BW was too much (about an hour to an hour and a half drive there and 40 minutes on the way home). Whereas the Yard is a 6-minute drive from me with ample sessions. Second, class style: Classes are Monday through Friday: 8-9:30, 10-11:30, 4-5:30, and 6-7:30pm and then two sparring classes on Saturday from 9-10:30 and 11-12:30. As far as I'm aware, Yoshi teaches each class and he does an excellent job. At other gyms, I feel much more advanced then I do at the Yard. Lots of basic bad habits that I got into are getting fine-tuned and corrected. A typical class is organized in four parts: (1) Cardio: A five minute round of jump ropes and then a 30 minute cardio session where we jog, sprint, do knees, teep across the mats. (2) Bagwork We then do several rounds of shadow boxing where Yoshi will make small adjustments to our form. From there, we all go on the heavy bags and practice whatever we want to work on for several rounds while Yoshi works one on one with us on pad/mitwork. This is where I think the Yard shines. If you go to a class with few students, you are essentially getting a free one on one. When you're not working one on one with Yoshi, you are working the bag. (3): Drills/Sparring From there, we work on a specific technique through partner drills and then light technical sparring. Yoshi is very attentive as he goes around and makes adjustments and suggestions. On Fridays the technique is clinch focused; which is really great. Many gyms in Southern California lack emphasis on the clinch. (4): Burnout/core work: We end with 3 minutes of ab/core work and then a minute plank. Sometimes we will burnout with skip knees on the bag. Overall: An excellent choice. I can't speak to how it would be for a beginner, as I came with two-years of experience. I imagine it would be a great place to start. Potential cons: I do not see people doing drills on thai pads (where one partner holds pads and the other hits). Typically, a Muay Thai class is 1 hour. At the Yard, it is 1.5 hours. Which means its a little more demanding. At this point, I cannot train every day even if my schedule allowed it because my body and cardio is just too shot. I dropped in twice. First time I didn't stay for any training as the instructor said he wouldn't be involved that day. He said that was typical for weekends. Came back on a weekday and stayed for training... he was barely involved in training that day. I understand how someone might think he is rude but I wouldn't go that far, really he just comes off as checked-out and not interested in his gym / business. The session is about 1/3rd combat sport related. The other 2/3rds is light cardio drills you can do in your own home. The other attendees are more willing to help and with that I would say this place serves more of a sparring club than a serious training gym. read more

I've dropped in about 5 times and it's my favorite place to train Muay Thai. I'm new to combat sports and Yoshi has transformed my technique by leaps and bounds. I have been coming to The Yard for about a year now and I'll fully admit that I'm completely addicted now. Hands down, the best martial arts gym I have ever been to. The environment is amazing; most people who have been coming for a while leave their egos behind and help everyone out at every level. I've been a member of several martial arts gyms over the past 12 years. Every gym has its strengths and weaknesses. Of all the places I've trained, The Yard overall is the best package in Los Angeles As long as you have good attitude and good motivation to at least try - the trainers will really dedicate themselves to help students out whether its to get fit or to fight pro. I've attended about three sessions each (2-3 months) at this establishment. Once when they were located at the arts district (always filming a movie), in building. And twice at the present location Ave. 26. Coaches, trainers, and fighters have no egos. They put you through the paces, cardio, mitt, pad, stomach and sparring. Training is similar to a fight camp and coaches critique on what needs improvement. Sometimes when get out of line or cocky. They bring you down to reality and get hard and tough on you!! I've been to 4 muay thai gyms in 3 cities. The yard is by miles the best one I've ever been to. What really sets them apart is 1: Quality of teachers: Mark Komuro is incredibly knowledgable and will pin point what your weak points are and give you actionable tips. 2: Focus on results. The point of the yard is to get your ready to fight, not to make you do drills that are way beyond you. They'll focus on getting you up to basics before having you do 10 punch combos that you'll do poorly and never use. 3: Individual attention. Unsure if this is still the format, but when I was there, it was mostly individual bag work, and then a coach would come hold some pads for you for 10 minutes or so and give you tips.I honestly found this to be much more beneficial than the group drills that other gyms do. Sadly I don't live in LA anymore, so I can't go here now, but I still use the lessons I learned here in every gym I've been to and they've served me well. read more

I'm a little less impressed with this gym than others who have submitted reviews. I went here because I'm always interested in getting back into MMA to get in shape It's so much more fun than lifting weights and running. Anyway, I've done both Muay Thai and BJJ off and on for several years, and as I get older, I just wanted to stick with Muay Thai since it's an easier sport than BJJ in my opinion. Anyway, most of my training is at Beta Academy in Washington, DC who is under Lloyd Irvin. If you google Lloyd Irvin, you can see he's trained a lot of UFC fighters and high level Jiu Jitsu guys/gals in the past before his controversy. You can also google his controversy if you're interested. I've also trained a little at 50/50 BJJ in Northern VA which is under Ryan Hall (UFC fighter) and Yamasaki Academy in Washington DC (UFC referee), as well as the UFC gym here in Rosemead, which is an excellent gym for the price See my review of that gym if you're interested in a cheap "mcdojo." but well worth the money. The only reason I mention this is that I have some experience with training in Muay Thai and BJJ. I'm by no means an expert, but I've done my fair share of going to gyms here and there. The issues I had with this gym are: 1) There is really no set instructions or classes. Even having done Muay Thai off and on for several years, I always want to learn new techniques since I know my form isn't always perfect or someone else has different techniques to teach. At this gym, there are really no set classes, other than one class on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and I don't think they are broken out by beginner, intermediate, and fight team, which is kind of important in my opinion. It's mostly a general fitness class and some clinching. 2) Although the couple of students I spoke with seemed really friendly, I didn't find that with the instructors. I had issue with one of the instructors who held pads for me I appreciated that he tried to correct my form, but it seemed like he was frustrated with my "style." He was trying to teach me to jab a certain way, which is fine and I was trying to implement it, but he wasn't patient at all when I kept doing it wrong. I've been in MANY sparring classes and I understand that my jabs aren't perfect, but I think his lack of patience was off-putting. I was going to ask him to ease up since it's not the way that I've learned and practiced to jab and it will take time to "unlearn," but I decided to just let it go and take his criticisms. It left a bad taste in my mouth and one of the reasons for the mediocre review. However, I have to say that it's nice to have an instructor hold pads for you, which is somewhat rare at many schools. The things I liked about the gym is it's well equipped and large. When I went from 5-7pm, it never got crowded. There was plenty of space to do what you want. The students seemed generally friendly, but I can't recommend this gym for the price, even if monthly. I think you'd do better either at a more rounded MMA school where they have classes and a set schedule. You'll pay more, but I think you're also going to learn a lot more in a shorter time. I would also look for schools that have some type of "fight team" and have regular competitors who participate in IBJJF tournaments. I understand there are some bad things going to a school filled with fighters (sometimes the school is only focused on fighters to build their reputation and ignore regular students) but I found this less in really reputable schools like the ones I mentioned above in DC and VA. Also, if you're near a UFC gym, i also recommend that. It's on par with the instruction of this gym (not great, but not horrible), but at least it's half the price and you get full access to a ton of gym equipment. read more

It's really difficult to add anything new to what's already been said, so I'll keep it simple... I can't recommend The Yard enough. If you're looking for a pretentious upscale gym with all the amenities that's full of a bunch of muscle-brained, over-sized MMA jerks... then this isn't the gym for you (and you're an idiot). However, if you're looking for a spartan, rough-and-tumble gym with easy to learn but insanely intense workouts, super knowledgeable and helpful trainers, and a bunch of the most hardcore but also the most chill people around, then you need to drag yourself out to The Yard. At only $100/month, it's cheaper than most Krav/Crossfit/MMA gyms you'll find. Plus, you can come as much as often as you'd like during the week. As there's no scheduled class times, you're able to walk in whenever you happen to get there and immediately start your workout. This is great if you're like me and never know exactly when you'll get out of the office or what traffic is like. I've always been a skinny, awkward, out of shape dude... However, in my, just over, two months at The Yard, I've gained fifteen pounds of muscle and am starting to see serious definition in my chest, abs, arms and legs. Additionally, my technique is really seeing some serious improvement. I walk out of there every time drenched head-to-toe in sweat and sore like nothing else... but I've also got a huge sense of pride that I've accomplished something pretty awesome. The owners and trainers (Mark, Joe, Lee and Manny) are a great set of guys. They know how to walk that perfect line of getting you motivated to push through your weakness while not making you feel like a loser when you come up against something you just can't do. This isnt your average MMA/BOXING/KICKBOXING GYM. There are no group classes (with an exception to KIDS and Womens classses) it is up to you to do the work. This gym is home to Glory Contender/tournament champion Joe Schilling and his team Head Trainer Mark Komuro, Manny Martinez and Lee Garcia. They also have a trainer, Yoshi, who had just returned from Thailand and has a traditional Muay Thai style of pad work. This is a real gym with no fancy equipment, if you show up they will push you and make sure you get some work in. They understand your skill level and would not pair you up with people that will not help you advance skill set. No one if forced to spar, clinch or even hit pads. Each trainer will take their time with beginners, intermediate and advanced students to make sure your technique, form, speed, and power are maximized. Who better to learn Muay Thai/Kickboxing from than one of the best fighters in the world and his team? They emphasize what works. I have been training muay thai with a lot of great trainers since 2006, but it was when I went to the Yard that I saw myself become more polished. They fine tuned all the techniques I had and gave me great speed and power in my hands. When the gym gets packed other students of higher levels are more than happy to move around with you, hold pads, and work out to help keep you warm until one of the trainers can help you out. Word to the wise, this gym is like school if you dont listen and try to advance your self you will keep drilling the basics until you master it. They preach foundation of fancy moves. Their amateur fight team is always working out and consistently fighting and representing the gym in local in house sparring session, and sanctioned amateur fights. Various fighters from all over the place come to train here when they have fights or need quality sparring. Every so often the gym will have special seminars where top level fighters will come and teach a group of selected participants in an intimate setting so each person can learn from top professionals. There are women's classes, kids classes, and saturday all day sparring. The first session is free. Just through the cardio, is draining but once you keep steady for a month you see how much more you have progressed and how much you have learned.. It is addicting to see progression. Great place to learn Muay Thai and to get a good workout. I'm always a little hesitant to train at MMA, boxing, Muay Thai gyms because I don't want to train with "bros" who jumped on the MMA bandwagon. My brother assured me the trainers and the members are all genuinely cool people and I would have to agree. The trainers are friendly and do a good job of teaching you according to your level. I really liked their light system: -green light (I forget how many minutes it lasts for) is when you work on your technique or your workout, -then you hear a bell and the yellow light comes on (for 30 seconds), this is when you go into I'm-behind-on-the-judges-scorecard-so-my-only-chance-to-win-this-fight-is-to-knock-out-my-opponent mode, at least that's what I was thinking -another bell and the red light comes on, this is when you rest The gym is in downtown, not West LA, so don't expect something like Equinox. If that's what you're looking for, then The Yard probably isn't for you. No attitudes, no high maintenance personalities, no snobby people who think they're too good for you, just genuine people who want a good workout. read more

Conventional gyms are so 2006. Bring on the next era of ass kicking workouts... bring me your Muay Thai. The Yard is fantastic, in every sense of the word. There is no pretense. No one cares who you are, cause frankly, next to Joe you're kind of a nobody anyway. There is a sense of family you feel the second you walk in the door, albeit the kind of family that kicks your butt the second you let your guard down. I know all you ladies out there are thinking, ew, men sweating like pigs beating the daylights out of each other. But it ain't like that. Unlike the numerous gyms you have irritatingly humored for the sake of a tight back end, at no point do you feel a thousand eyes on your back end here. I don't know. Really wanted to like this place since its close to my house, but never felt less welcomed by an instructor. I walked in and the Asian guy with tattoos that's running the class barely looks up long enough from his phone to mumble "here fill this out" and hands me a waiver. That's the only time I was spoken to by him. Never said hi, asked my name, gave me pricing info or asked my experience level. Luckily I've trained before or I would have been really lost. We warm up for a long time, maybe 30-40 minutes, before we put gloves on. We then do some very simple bag work. Weirdly enough we do no mitt or Thai pad work. My partner at the bag was a beginner and was kicking and punching wrong, but the instructor couldn't be bothered to step in and correct him. Then we did some basic partner drills, like 1, 2, kick. Then sparred for a few rounds. All the other students I interacted with were very nice and helpful. Not the place you want to go to if you're a beginner. With so many good gyms in LA find one with a bit more enthusiasm for helping new students. read more

Mark is a great trainer! First time i walked in didn't get that feeling of big egos and everyone staring. Instead people were welcoming and ready to help. Started working out here 2 months ago and I am so hooked. I go in the morning and sometimes Sat morning, however this place offers free style training instead of set hour scheduled classes- it works out for me. I can go anytime when they are open. Compare to greedy crossfit gyms which charges over 200 per month, this place is affordable and really get you in shape without lifting heavy weights and climbing ropes. Plus.. you get one on one training from pros and friendly owners- Mark is awesome- you will get full workout if you can survive intense warming up routine for about 2 weeks. After years of being harrassed and constantly asked when I was going to train by my friends who train MMA, I finally decided to start looking for a good Muay Thai school in my area. After doing some research and checking out a few schools, I came across a news article in the Downtown LA newspaper talking about The Yard. So I stopped by one night to check it out and decided on the spot to join. The Yard is located inside the LA Boxing club in Downtown LA. If you're looking for a high end health club where they teach Muay Thai classes by a Billy Blank wannabe to a mass of people at once, then The Yard isn't for you. Owners Mark and Joe will make sure to whip you into shape and teach you the fundamentals of Muay Thai on a individual one on one level. There is a ring where you can spar other students if you like. Both guys are friendly and patient. Joe is a up and coming MMA fighter who is good at what he does. If you're serious about learning and traning Muay Thai or want to do some intense cardio, I highly recommend checking out The Yard. If you want to learn or improve your Muay Thai this is definitely the right place. This is a no-nonsense gym where you will spar on a daily basis. Of course the trainers will not put you against someone who will rip your head off (well at least not in the beginning). The training is well thought out and geared to your skill level. One of the best things about the Yard is the individual attention you receive. Each of the three trainers have extended knowledge within their own specialties. Overall the atmosphere is fun and friendly. I was training at another gym before I even knew about The Yard Muay Thai and Fitness Center. The first day I walked in, I was greeted by a very friendly and informative staff and immediately put to work on improving my Thai and Boxing. I immediately resigned from the old gym, and have been with The Yard ever since. I honestly can't say anything bad about this place. They give you access to the absolute best trainers in the biz. And, the people who attend are GREAT. All ego's checked at the door. Whether you want to learn self defense, how to fight, to get into great shape, or just self improvement, these guys got you covered. $120 a month for OPEN GYM! You can go there and train for hours on end! BTW, I'm 6'1" and used to weigh 210 lbs. After 9 months with They Yard Muay Thai, I now weigh 160lbs. You do the math! read more

My experience at the yard muay thai was a good one. The gym is located about 10 minutes from my house. I enjoy the environment and energy. The warm up was good but I noticed that the instructors didn't really care much after the warm up. The Yard is awesome. First session is free. And the first time I went into The Yard - the cardio/workout left me completely wiped out! But it was awesome, so I immediately signed up. Every time you go in, a personal trainer and/or other members of the gym will work with you, supervise you, and make sure that you are getting better in the way that you need it. No classes means that you can arrive whenever and the fact they are open at 7am on weekdays, means I can hit it before work, which is perfect for my schedule. Anyhow, every time I go in, its something new in the sparring/training and each time I love it! The staff is awesome, and they focus on form and excellent technique. And they don't make me feel bad that i'm so freakin' out-of-shape, they push you as hard as you need to be pushed to get better. I love this place. Moved to LA in May and have been here 2-4 times a week ever since. Everyone is friendly and welcoming, and I've loved it from day one. Caveat: I'm really not very good - but because I've moved around a lot I've trained at a bunch of places including a couple of gyms in Thailand, and I don't know that I've ever had as much one-on-one attention as I do here. There's always someone around to ask, to correct things, to point out little issues. Yes - as said earlier, there are one 3 set classes a week. But that means you go anytime and for as long as you want, and there are always trainers around. There are also often impromptu mini-classes where 4 or 5 people will be working on the bags and Lee or Yoshi (the trainers) will come over and lead everyone through a technique or combination. In the scope of things I'd always rather have a 15 minutes of a 4 person technique class than an hour of a 20 person class. Also stellar - the warm up. Super intense, and we love it. Don't think I've ever gone without having an 'I'm dying' moment. Ha. Sometimes someone leads and if there's nobody around you do your own; it's basically like everything at the Yard - you get out exactly what you put in; if you're going to work hard, you'll get a lot out of it; if you're going to sit around, well, that's on you too. read more

I am a slow learner in love with muay thai and trained at 3 different facilities. Another one in LA, then 2 months in northern Thailand and then the Yard for a month while I was in town. Mark really knows his craft!! And so do all the other Krus there (I haven't had as much of an opportunity to work with them yet but looking forward to it). First of all, Mark immediately picked up on my weak points. The same problem areas other trainers have commented on. That made me feel comfortable and confident. He thought outside the box and started helping me correct some of my issues day 1! It was awesome! This is the man you want in your corner if you are thinking about really getting into the sport. Best gym ever. Real Muay Thai, real people, no egos. Hardest workout you'll get. Hardest working coaches. Yoshi gives his all and is an amazing teacher, makes sure you have good technique and understand the form. Mark and Joe are total pros and while you might not see them as much these days, they're the core of the Yard and bring so much expertise and deep experience. I've trained muay thai for a little over 5 years and while I was on vacation in Los Angeles, I wanted to find a gym so I could continue training. After searching around and reading review on various gyms, The Yard stood out as the best one to try out. I'm so happy I went there! Since we were pretty busy driving around and doing touristy things, The Yard's open schedule made it really easy to just walk in and start training. As soon as I walked in, I loved the environment instantly. Like another reviewer stated, the set up and trainers are legit. The coaches have such vast knowledge and they actually have experience in the ring. I had one on one training with Manny for 90 minutes. I started off jumping rope, then some warm-up/cardio work, then bag work, and then mitt work, finishing with a lot of crunches. Manny was really helpful with my boxing, pointing out areas that need improvement (which have been mentioned before) and he helped me work to correct them. Also, while using the heavy bags, Lee gave great advice for using my lead teep quicker, and also advice on the rear roundhouse. Overall I was very, very happy with my experience at The Yard. I was staying a good half hour away, and would gladly have driven an hour to come to this gym again. I will definitely come back to The Yard the next time I'm in Los Angeles and I highly encourage anyone else looking for a legit place to train to come here, you will not regret it! read more

I've been training here for about 6 months and it has definitely impacted my life for the better. I came in 50 pounds heavier with no cardio to speak of. A trek across a parking lot that was a little too long would have me sweating like a pig. My strength and overall fitness has gone up by leaps and bounds. My wellbeing is much improved and not only do I feel energized, I feel much more capable of dealing with life's obstacles. Fitness benefits aside, if you are looking to learn Muay Thai, especially to fight this is definitely the place to check out. The quality of instruction is great and it is evident that the trainers all know their stuff. They each have their own areas of expertise and spending time here will aid you in becoming a more complete striker. They know how to teach and how to motivate you. I always feel like I walk out of here better than I came in. The environment itself is wonderful. Everyone is very mellow and down to earth. You don't need to fear walking in here and having some Affliction clad Sagat look-alikes giving you swirlies or making you kiss their biceps or anything like that. This coming from a shy reserved type of guy. The gymgoers will fast become your training partners as you motivate and teach each other. You will be challenged but, you will get in shape, you will learn something that will benifit your life in many aspects, and you will have fun. background: I have trained here for 3 months with no martial arts background Instructors: Mark and Yoshi are good at teaching and knows how to help you. Lee likes to bark instructions and gets frustrated. The other instructors I have not run into. experience: You basically pay to use their equipment here and get occasional 10 min coaching from the instructors. This happens probably once every 2 -3 days with Lee. Mark is good about spreading his time and comes by to tells you what you are doing wrong for about 5 min and comes back later to check up on you. Aside from that you can ask around for advice from others. I believe if you want to learn how to fight, experience will take a looong way and this place has its benefit of not limiting you to doing an exercise routine so you can spar with each other. BUT i believe if you find a better gym you can learn the proper techniques to build a GOOD FOUNDATION and then after that lesson you spar until you had enough. If I am paying $120 for my hard earned money, I want more instructional input rather than 10 min sessions every now and then. read more
