What an amazing yarn store! I walked in to the store and was greeted by a friendly staff who told me the layout of the store which made it easy to shop there. They had a local section and a sale section as well as a bin with free patterns. All in all, hey had a great selection. They had a massive selection Juniper Moon Farm in the color and amount that I wanted. On the way out they even made sure I had the right dye lot. The Yarn Store at Nob Hill is one of my favorite places to shop in Albuquerque. Even if I'm not buying anything, I love to go in and look at all of the beautiful yarns. They have any weight and color you could want in a variety of fibers, including plant-based. The staff is friendly and ready to help but always gives you space. They offer a wide variety of classes, and there are usually other fiber artists at the community table who can give you a hand if you need help with a project. I love being able to shop at a locally owned store with such a wide variety of quality yarns and notions. read more

Nice selection of yarn and welcoming and caring owners/managers. They offered us coffee and snacks which was a nice gesture. We have been to many yarn shops and this one is in the top 3. The resident knitters (i.e. the clucking hens who take up space and probably don't buy much) were more clannish than I have encountered in most shops. However, it was amusing hearing some of their silly gossip and observations about life. read more

Terrific yarn shop with a great selection and lots of room to knit in store. When I visited there were several tables of people knitting. I only had brief conversation with any of them but the one I chatted with was friendly. They had a lot of the standard brands I'm used to seeing and some interesting ones I had never seen before as well. They have the yarn organized both by weight and fiber so it should be easy to find what you want there. I ended up with three skeins because I couldn't decide between two sock yarns colorways of a brand I'd never seen, and I found a skein that was perfect for a hat for my kiddo that I just couldn't pass up. The location is great, near a bunch of other shops and restaurants. We parked on the street without any problem. Prices were standard for a yarn shop, but they had both high end and affordable stuff. read more

Checked out this shop while I was visiting ABQ. The store has a good selection of yarn and some fiber too. However, no one said hello or welcomed me to the shop when I entered or the entire time I browsed. There was a woman, possibly the shop owner, sitting at the front table discussing purchasing product with a sales rep(?). She barely noticed when I was ready to check out, and made me wait until she had a convenient moment to break away from the rep. It was disappointing, but I still made my purchase to support her shop. read more

What a cool place to get creative! Lots of beautiful yarns! I'm in the beginning stages of crochetting, but when I get going, I'd love to go and pick out some really nice yarns. They have every kind you can imagine! I went for a Yelp event to make some Christmas ornaments and crafts and loved the place. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I felt right at home. I agree with a previous reviewer that stated that she felt like an outsider in this shop. Me too. Yes, I was asked if I needed anything, but the vibe of the shop just felt a bit off to me. Just not all that welcoming or friendly. Wide selection of yarns, but pricey. About 15-20% higher than other yarn shops I've visited, and I've been all over the US. When I was checking out, she forgot to give me back my change. When I asked for it, she gave me a funny look as if to say, "Why is that a big deal?" Yeah, ok, it was only a few cents, but still. Just made me feel uncomfortable and weird. This shop just left me feeling "Meh." read more

While I have read the prior reviews, I'm basing mine upon my own experience. I am not an employee of or an instructor at The Yarn Store, but I am considered a regular. My very first experience at The Yarn Store was a knitting class. As someone who had never knit before, I showed up early to buy needles, yarn, and anything else I might need. The instructor, whom I later discovered is the store manager, advised me not to buy anything, since TYS has practice supplies. She did an excellent job of explaining the differences between needles and the types of yarn, and she hooked me on knitting during the class. She is, in addition, very patient, since it took me the whole class and a few hours beyond to learn the cast-on. Another aspect of TYS which I've found invaluable is the expert help. They are three women with a ton of experience in crochet and knitting as well as things like dyeing and spinning who are at the store at least one day a week for the sole purpose of helping people who need it. I've worked with all three, and they are all very patient (this is a theme with me) and knowledgeable, and they explain the why as well as the how-to. TYS is very much a community center. There is open knitting any time the store is open, and the regulars there are for the most part also willing to help out newer crocheters and knitters. There is a small kitchen with a Keurig brewer and Keurig cups of coffee, hot chocolate, and tea, and a bunch of mugs for community use. There is also a folder of local restaurant menus for reference, and eating is allowed in the store. There is free wireless with a conspicuously-posted password. One of the silliest and fun aspects is the bathroom which has been painted as a whiteboard and the freely available markers. There are two swifts and two ball winders available even if the yarn was bought elsewhere, and there is a section for blocking with mats and pins. The yarn selection is quite expansive as well as somewhat expensive, but it is generally worth the expense. They have a limited selection of some very nice roving. Most of the knitting needles are circulars but there are double-pointed and even a few straight sets as well. They have at least four kinds of interchangeables. I don't know much about crochet, but they seem to have a decent number of hooks. There are also odds and ends like buttons and stitch markers, and a small room devoted to embroidery/needlepoint. The employees have varying degrees of experience, but during slow times will help to the extent of their abilities when it comes to answering questions. read more

So over the years, this is where I go to find yarn that I cannot find at Michaels or Joanns. I enjoy going in there and shop for yarn but I never wanted to be in the store more than an hour. Only because when you walk in, there is a nice round table where they invite people to sit and knit or crochet. So I feel like if I see people sitting there, I have to be extra quiet so I do not disturb them. Despite the fact that I do not knit or attend classes here, the sales clerk (the owner's daughter specifically) is always very courteous. In fact, it was her who showed me how to use a circular knitting needle. If you ever need specialty yarn, this is the place to be. I started coming to the Yarn Store in 2015. I came to ABQ for a month long stay and being a newbie knitter I was thrilled to know there was a yarn store within walking distance of my accommodations. Since then we've relocated to ABQ and I couldn't be more pleased. I've made friends, have learned about exciting places to visit, have had awesome help with my yarn projects and much more. I can thank the owner and it's fabulous employees enough for all their insightful help and overwhelming knowledge. My week isn't fulfilled unless I stop in and sit a bit to knit. The gentleman was very helpful in finding items and well as very willing to let me browse. He knew I was from out of town so he did not tell me about classes I could not join or things that would make me feel I was missing out. You can see it as soon as you walk in with the work tables and many clever aids on and around the shelves. In addition to being very well stocked, a variety of hand spun and hand made knitting supplies from locals abound. To stimulate more creative ideas is the lending library. It's free. Topics and supplies are stocked for embroidery, needlepoint, spinning, and more. A knitting shop can't get any better than that! But there's more. What fun traveling to a new town and finding such a treasure as the Yarn Shop!!!!!! Filled to the brim with luscious yarns and easy to read signage, like 'warm fuzzies' , 'socks' & 'big & chunky'. I do not agree with previous reviews, I sat down and dived into a conversation. This was my choice as many people come for help or to work on a challenging project, not have a social time. I was warmly greeted, and when asked questions about local yarns, I was immediately directed. BUT I appreciate the laid back kind of knit shop like my local in Healdsburg, I don't like someone hovering over me..I want to soak in the colors and textures on my own time. This is NOT a cheap knitting shop, but my understanding is that they have a skilled knitter on staff at all times and do not charge for drop in help..this is HUGE to me..as I always need a bit of help! They did not have as many knitted up items as I have seen elsewhere, but what they had was yummy! What a great store. I was visiting my girl friend ABQ and I was looking for something to do, so of course I look up LYS. Not only did I walk into an amazing store with LOTS of yarn to choose from but they had nice employees and a great feel that said "please come sit and knit". I left with a plastic project bag, a new pattern, excitement for a new project and feeling welcomed. Upon returning to ABQ for another visit I 100% made another trip to this LYS.
