Dr. Gully really is nice and really does care for patients, however there are times when she doesn't listen and doesn't notice how sick a child really is. The first time it happened she apologized and gave us a second visit where she was far more helpful. Then last year my son was really sick again and Dr. Gully didn't want to provide sick notes or homebound forms for his absences so she just dropped him from her practice. I had no idea why she had done this. I contacted the practice manager to inquire about it and Dr. Gully then called to discuss it with me. She said that she would only provide notes when a patient had been seen since day one of their illness, which was never the case with my son. My mom Is a doctor who is able to help us with minor illnesses so we only go to see Dr. Gully if illness is severe or prolonged. I agreed to bring him whenever he got sick immediately and all was well so we stuck with her. Then he got sick again, really sick, with a virus. I brought him in immediately to comply with her expectations. Once again Dr. Gully didn't listen well. She kept talking about his illness from last year instead of focusing on the current illness which was causing him to writhe in pain for 4-5 hours every night until about 3 or 4 am. I asked again and again what could be done for symptom relief. Her only suggestions were Tylenol or Motrin which proved ineffective so I brought him back in to see what else could be done. Her only suggestions then were to "love on him" or bring him to the ER, both inadequate suggestions. You can't hold a child who is writhing in pain and the ER is for acute illness and injury, not viruses. She should have done some investigating to figure out how to treat him or referred him to someone else, not give up and offer terrible suggestions. Then when I asked her to update his sick note she took it and said she would call the principal directly. Then I got an e-mail from the principal in which he told me Dr. Gully had said my child showed no evidence of illness and should return to school immediately. I had done everything she required for a note and still hadn't gotten one. (I did eventually get one after complaining to the practice manager.) Dr. Gully should have voiced her opinion at our office visit, not go behind my back. She seemed to think my son was just not wanting to go to school, but if a kid fakes an illness they heat up a thermometer or pretend to have stomach pain. They don't writhe in pain crying, moaning, and begging for help for 5 hours every night. So now I was pressured to bring my sick child who was barely sleeping at night back to school. How was he ever supposed to recover if I did that? Furthermore, he did have observable signs of illness, a fever, which they were aware of when the nurse took his temperature. I immediately found my son a new doctor. This doctor noticed my son's lymph nodes were swollen, a sign of infection which Dr. Gully had missed, and he told us that we could combine Tylenol and Motrin in adult doses giving us exact directions about how large the doses should be and that finally proved to be helpful is easing the pain. By not believing that my son was sick Dr. Gully failed to provide him the medical advice he desperately needed and the note he needed so he could rest and heal.

Dr. Gully is great at explaining things and she never talks down to me or my son. Her front office staff and nurses are also friendly and helpful. The NHC staff have been the most loving, caring people I could ever hope for. The nurses and CNA's are attentive and work so hard to make each resident safe and comfortable. I don't know why they have call buttons for the patients at this facility because the lights blink…read moreoutside their door and some kind of notification goes off in the nurses station, but many of the CNA's are so busy talking on their cell phones or searching the Internet that they never look up, and if you go up there and ask if they can help this patient, they'll say yeah I'll get to it in a minute and put their head back down and keep scrolling. It happened again today and I was literally dumbfounded. I just stood with the person that needed help, even though I couldn't help them because I'm not an employee nor family member, only an acquaintance, and I said I'll stay with you until somebody helps you. I can't believe that they're still in business. DHEC needs to check this place out anonymously to really see what goes on in real time. There are some very caring employees, but there's a handful of CNA's that need to be terminated immediately.

I felt right at home and they treated me so nicely. While I waited in the room I was nervous but in came Kara Kristen Cooper-Gilmer ,FNP. I asked way too many questions but she made me feel so welcomed. She answered them all and then some. She talked to me like I was an important person and like a real person should. She gave me plenty of advice and started me out on some migraine medicine after learning about what I was given previously. I would recommend her for ANYONE who needs to be seen for migraines or headaches. I'm actually excited to go back to my appointment. My problem began with pain from the left side of my lower back that radiated down my left leg. My…read moreprimary care physician did an x-ray and didn't see anything so he set me up for physical therapy sessions. The first session went well enough and the pain subsided but, within weeks it came back with a vengeance. I suffered through three more therapy sessions, each one with a different therapist. None of their efforts gave me any relief and I actually felt much worse after each session. When I went to my fifth therapy session, the therapist wanted to have me get on a stationary bicycle. I told her I could barely walk in, I sure as hell couldn't get on a bicycle. That's when I came to the realization that physical therapy was not going to work for me. The first orthopedic surgeon I was referred to looked at my x-rays and sent me to a sports medicine facility in Spartanburg where they injected my lower back with a medication that was supposed to relieve my pain. After the lidocaine that was included in the shot wore off later that evening, I was in as much pain as before the shot. When I called the orthopedic surgeon's office, I was told my only options for relief were hot or cold compresses, ibuprofen, or a pain relief patch, all of which I had already tried with no luck. I suffered unrelenting pain most days for about six months. I could barely put on my pants every day and it was very painful to walk, sit, or ride in a car. At around this time, my mother-in-law fell, broke her shoulder, and had to have surgery to fix it. My wife was telling my mother-in-law's surgeon's assistant about my troubles while the surgeon was nearby. The surgeon asked my wife to show where my pain was located and he immediately said that it was a back issue. They set me up with an appointment to see a colleague of my mother-in-law's surgeon at Piedmont Orthopaedics, Dr. Van Pelt. I went to see Dr. Van Pelt and he ordered an MRI. I went for a follow up visit after the MRI and Dr. Van Pelt didn't initially see the problem but continued to study the MRI. He finally located the pinched nerve. He took his time and explained the problem and his recommended treatment. He recommended ALIF (Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion) surgery. It has now been almost three weeks since my surgery and I have nothing but the highest praise for Dr. Van Pelt, his assistant Kimberly, the vascular surgeon, the anesthesiologist, and all of the nurses and staff at St. Francis Hospital. I always felt like I received the highest standard of care with excellent communication as to what was being done and what to expect, and I was discharged after only one night's stay. I have experienced a lot of relief from the pain I was having. To be honest there are some minor lingering discomforts but that was to be expected and truthfully, my recovery has been far easier and quicker than I anticipated. I am doing my best to follow Dr. Van Pelt's recommendations for limiting my activities but I fully anticipate a complete recovery in short order. I highly recommend Dr. Van Pelt and Piedmont Orthopaedics.
