Lutherans are Christians. As a community of the people of God, we are called to minister to all people of our world, knowing that the world is often an unloving place. Christ calls us to reconciliation and wholeness. We are challenged by the Gospel to be agents of healing within our society. We joyfully welcome every person , regardless of gender, age, race, culture, ethnic or linguistic heritage, sexual orientation, marital status, physical/mental ability, and economic status.
History
Established in 1880.
Third Lutheran Church is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, a denomination of over 11,000 congregations and 5-million people across the country.
Third began in 1880 in the Butchertown area as a Sunday School ministry out of First Lutheran Church downtown. In 1886 Third Lutheran Church was officially organized as a congregation and located in its first building on Story Avenue. In 1931 the congregation moved to its current building on Frankfort Avenue, across the street form the Kentucky School for the Blind.
Like most congregations in our area, we experienced a decrease in size of the congregation over the past couple of decades. We are now on a growing trend as we seek to intentionally reach out to the community around us. As we grow in numbers, we also are growing in diversity. Our membership spans a wide range of ages, occupations, education, economic levels, and previous religious experiences.

What will Worship services be like?
Worship is inviting, participatory, relevant and transforming. It is a 'come as you are' casual service that follows the same pattern (liturgy) each week. The service is traditional, and there is much singing. Also expect the Peace to last 5-10 minutes, as the congregation is very friendly and are like a family.
Do I have to become a member to attend?
No! We welcome everyone to attend our services; members and guests.
How does someone become a member?
We hold regular new member classes that will help you get to know the basics of Christianity, the Bible, and Lutheranism.
Can I take Holy Communion if I'm not baptized?
All are invited to receive Holy Communion. Lutherans believe that Jesus Christ is truly present in the bread and wine. Children not yet communing are encouraged to come for a blessing as well.
